Apple Remote iPhone App Controls Your iTunes Over Wi-Fi
Posted by Brian Lam at 9:02 PM on July 10, 2008
The App store went live a few minutes ago and the remote app we saw last week went live as well. It controls your iTunes through a screen that looks just like the regular iPhone/iPod touch player, and it only works through Wi-Fi. You can control AppleTVs, too, and you can also control speaker output.

joestradamus you rock, I've been unable to figure this out until now... I had my N TIme Capsule set to Bridge mode but didn't realize my G Airport Express needed that setting as well. Thanks for the help!!!

Just a little more effort required to make this, combined with a few Airport Express units, a nice competitor to Sonos. Multiroom is going to be key.

So, out of curiosity (and because I'm too lazy to go to the damned site)... this works for Windows, yes?

This is probably gonna be the end of Blacktree's Telekinesis program, Although that only runs on a Mac.

It will also eat into the sales of Salling Clicker, a remote control utility for cell phones and PDAs.

Wow im using this now. This thing is AWESOME. It automatically syncs for any new songs that add to your music library. Excellent app. You can use this control your Apple TV and everything too.

Pretty sure you could do the same thing with Geexbox running on a $30 beater i386 machine using GB's webgui and a smartphone with a decent browser.

What if I have 2 Windows PCs on the same wireless network with iTunes. They have different libraries (obviously) and my iPhone (coming tomorrow AM) will sync with just one. Will I have the ability to remote control either version of iTunes?
Thanks! Can't wait!

@mcdonnr:
If you got a Win Mobilephone and your PC has bluethooth you can pretty much control it anything.
I recently upgraded to a Moto Q9h Global for $80 (refurbished like new) and was very pleased to find out the "remote control" option.
You can hook up the phone to the PC over my PC's BT connection (keyboard/mouse/audio) so it becomes a FULL FLEDGE PC remote control.
I can navigate / open / close any apps and control Windows Media Center / Windows Media Player, etc...
There are specific screens on the phone for each application...
Actually pretty darn cool! if you ask me.
I building a MCPC soon... So I may ditch or avoid a harmony controller altogether...
Microsoft certainly has it right...

Goddamit, this could be really useful, but there's no on-the-fly playlist support. So, you can select a song, but you have to wait until it's over before you select the next song! No seamlessly playing DJ at the party. Jeezus, Apple, something you jerks get things so half-assed.

@kevinsays and @kellygeorge -- exactly. What about Front Row?
I get that Apple wants us to buy AppleTVs, but having had a Mac mini as HTPC before that came out, I'm not feeling the love right now.
I guess nothing is stopping someone else from developing their own app to provide this kind of functionality. And I wonder how you'd 'pair' it with a specific machine's copy of Front Row... hmm.

BTW, you *can* use this with more than one wireless network. Bonjour (the protocol that Apple uses here) only works on a single subnet. So I was able to get this working with my iPhone on a G network (Airport Express) with iTunes and AppleTV on an N network (Airport Extreme N) by chosing "Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge Mode)" in the Internet tab of the Airport Utility. Hope this helps someone. Cheers.
