Acer Ships Ginormous 8920G Gemstone Notebooks; 16:9, Dual HDDs, Blu-ray Included, Hernia Belt Not
Posted by Matt Hickey at 12:00 PM on July 18, 2008
Acer's now shipping the 8920G Gemstone laptops, and they're even more impressive than we'd thought. While not the biggest screen we've seen on a portable, they sport an impressive 18.2-inch LCD at 1920x1080 with a 16:9 aspect ratio, perfect for watching movies on the integrated Blu-ray R/W drives. They're not light, tipping the scales at just over four kilos, but their 4cm thickness makes up for some of that. What's really interesting is Acer put dual hard drives in these machines, meaning you get 640GB total, probably the highest we've ever seen in a shipping portable. If you're looking for the ultimate in desktop replacements, these are a great place to start, if you can afford the US$3,000 price tag. [Trusted Reviews]

Pfft, it's a little bigger and a little more expensive than a well-specced Dell XPS M1730 - nothing overly new or exciting.

It's for someone who wants a desktop they can take out when needed. If you live on an RV, boat, Manhattan apartment, this might be a good idea compared to having two computers which would cost as much to get this performance.
For me, I wouldn't do it as battery run time would be in the abyss with a screen that large. Nine pounds pretty much ruins the idea of traveling a lot, add the chargers, spare battery, and other nik naks and you're well beyond bowling ball territory.
I have a Sony Vaio with 13" screen, it's 3lbs with extended battery and you can watch DVD's on it with wireless. Being able to burn CD's makes moving stuff back and forth easy. I just can't see going for this brick unless you must only have one computer and travel isn't on the menu very often. Maybe for the person who takes it to the office and plugs it in there, then takes it home. Might be a good idea, especially since you could leave the battery at home and have a power cord at each place.

I thought that some company contracted a hard drive company already to create 1TB HDs. O, I found it! [www.asus.com] It might be a concept, but Asus is at least some where.

Well if you travel via the train as much as I do.. it makes sense, rip an entire box set of DVD's and get your music on there, a restore partition, multiple os's, a few virtual machines (one for pr0n naturally) A terabyte is not enough these days. I honestly keep iso's of any install i have so that i never have to carry additional media.

Forgot to add one funny point. My fat laptop was a Toshiba Satellite. It was almost 2" thick on one end.
To brainwash the user into believing their laptop is not fat, Toshiba included a video in which the "designers" conceive of the side profile of this fat lap top as an airplane wing.

You'll have to add an extra pound for the power brick and another 2 pounds for the laptop case and a minimal amount of junk. So that's at least 12 pounds.
I used to carry a laptop and bag around that weight. I see a chiropractor now.

@shamoononon has a hebetudinous dog: I continue to be a satisfied Acer weightlifter after about four years - got an Acer tablet that really weighs too much to carry around like a tablet, but I really like the machine.
@Hello_Newman: I think you are spot on - this is not for the regular schlepper. This is meant to stay MOSTLY in one spot, as a sole computer for a small businessman who has to move it occasionally.
@Digo: Oh, ahahah, you have foolishly underestimated the size of my lap!!! Silly mortal!!!!

Heh after the Acer laptop that I am currently using and am currently holding the power jack in place I will never buy Acer again.
Although that left hand volume control, etc... looks amazingly cool :D
18.2" Whew...wow...woah!
I would never pay $3000 dollars for that behemoth.
Although it is bigger than my TV, and it does play Blu-ray...hmm...

please please don't say "ginormous." I am not bashing or being blatantly offensive here, but there's just something very "junior high" about this word that makes me cringe. I'm sorry... I can't help it. Please don't lay down the hammer.

Is 18" and nine pounds really "portable"? It's not really a desktop replacement so much as an all-in-one desktop in a folding form factor.
Left-hand controls are only marketable to those whose right hands are already occupied...

My father in law just got an HP Pavilion HDX portable with a 20 inch screen. I'm not sure on the specs other than the screen size but lifting that bastage was terrifying. I had no idea that there was a niche for these things but I guess so. Lord help anyone who breaks their screen on these things.

@Mandatory_Field: it would be at the original price tag (the expected $200). now that eee is reaching $700 usd the concept has lost all validity, now being a juxtaposition more than opposite. I think is what @Tiago Sartor: ment.

This thing is about as "portable" as the 21 inch "portable" TV we had when I was a kid. The only difference between the "portable" and the "table" model? The handle attached to the top.

@stupidjerk: You're familiar with a BOV - a "break-out vehicle?" You know, the MiniCooper in the back of the Hummer in case you get ambushed.
I could see a MacBookAir being used as a BOV for this laptop. Get ambushed by Vista or your arms get too tired, just unstrap the MBA from the back of this and away you go!
Best of both worlds! Need to talk to a patent attorney....
