35,310 Lego Star Wars Clone Trooper Army Invades Earth
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 12:15 AM on July 1, 2008
What are 35,310 Lego Star Wars Clone Troopers mini-figs doing together, apart from planning a planet invasion after breaking out of the giant Lego storage cathedrals? Raising awareness and funds for autism, that's what. So if you wondered where all those helmets at the Lego stormtrooper cloning machine go to, check the gallery for some amazing high resolution shots.
A Lego employee group of Lego UK employees built the Clone Trooper army in just six and a half hours to raise money for The National Autistic Society. The National Autistic Society is a British organisation dedicated to helping "people with autism and Asperger syndrome live their lives with as much independence as possible."

What about the plight of the clone trooper? He has no independence. Poor guy has that new zealand accent pushed on him from birth.

That is like 90 stormtroopers placed every minute and I bet if you attacked them (like by stomping on them) they still couldn't hit you to save their life.

Nice project. Nice pictures. Nice cause.
@rockntrumpet: I think you're looking for something that isn't there. When I saw it, I was reminded of an officer reviewing the troops. The guy who did this did it in support of the people you're thinking he's mocking. Damn unlikely.

Is that one clone trooper facing the wrong direction supposed to be funny? What? Like he's too slow to understand that he's facing the wrong way? I find this offensive.

That is 35,310 flavors of awesome.
Me, I'd like to see it done with the more "modern" stormtroopers, some Imperial guards, Darth Vader, and the shuttle Tyderium.

Now I want someone to use stop-action animation to make the whole army do a right face.
We used to animate our Lego kits using Super-8 camera. Yeah. I'm semi-old. The kits were the original Space kits, with the rocket-around-the-planet logos and the air packs. They were among the first with faces.

Sounds like a great idea but... what's the connection? How are the clone troopers going to actually raise money for the National Autistic Society?
Are they going to sell them all on eBay?
Are the Troopers going to man massive phone banks and solicit donations?
Are they still active mercenaries generating income from warring factions?
Will the Death Star provide a matching donation?
Lunch with Lord Vader, inspired by longtime nemesis Warren Buffet?
Seriously, looks cool, but what's the $$ connection with the Autism Society?

Mmm. Okay raising awareness is good. But I'm not sure why they picked the clones. The clones are mindless worker ants. Trained to do one thing really. No room for individuality, spirituality, or much personality....and they're being used to promote autism awareness. I'd rather use someone like yoda, or obi-wan, or even mace windu. Some awesome kick butt jedi, that HAS a personality...versus a drone. Like, "help yoda fight autism, and the force will be with you, to find a cure"....okay, that was cheesy, I just find the drones boring is all.

well, yeah but 35,310 yodas wouldn't make any sense.
i think if they had built like a dais or something in the front for some imperial brass and maybe lord vader or something the effect mightn't have been lost on so many of you.
of course as a matter of perspective they're counting on us to know that WE are the imperial brass up on the dais and that's why it's not there. as far as the one trooper facing the wrong direction, i'd only have to ask if anyone has ever seen the cover of Sgt. Pepper's lonely hearts club band? Paul Mccartney is a great promoter of autistic charities and resaerch foundations, and I'm pretty sure that's a tip of the hat in sir paul's direction.

Interesting...I choose not to beieve the single clone trooper doing his own thing was meant to convey the "offensive" message that he was "slow"....rather, I prefer to see it as that one lone little guy has the courage to be different and to maintain uniqueness and individuality among the countless masses who are always telling him otherwise. Beautiful!
