Toshiba’s LED TV Screen Lights up Centre Stage in Times Square

Only back in May were we talking about another Times Square display—Walgreen’s one—and today Toshiba’s news is about its new display there. Sitting 86 metres in the air, the 15.6m by 16m display is a 1280 x 1248 pixel LED high-definition monster that uses some proprietary Technovirtual technology to create virtual pixels to achieve an even higher apparent resolution. It can show over a billion colours, and since it sits atop One Times Square, it’s got a pretty commanding view over the streets. And environmentalists may be pleased to learn it replaces a previous screen that consumed much more power. High-def advertising and green credentials? Impressive. [Toshiba]

iPhone 3G Unlocked And Working On 3

Gizmodo AU

Up until today, there was absolutely no way of knowing whether or not an unlocked iPhone 3G would work on other networks like 3 – even 3 themselves had no idea. Fortunately, thanks to MacTalk.com.au forum member tryandbyte, we now know that you can, in fact, have your iPhone and eat some decent data plans too.

It’s hardly the cheapest option, or the simplest, but if you purchase an iPhone 3G outright and pay an unlocking fee to Optus (It’s $80), you can update your iPhone to work with other carriers.

If you’re interested to see more screengrabs and read all about the unlocking process, head on over to the MacTalk forums.

UPDATE: Reader Simon has informed us that it also works on an unlocked Telstra iPhone, with evidence available on the MacTalk forums

iPhone, Meet Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

We couldn’t think of any better combination of Gizmodo’s stereotypical interests than checking out Star Wars: The Force Unleashed on the iPhone (…iPhone LEGO Star Wars would of course be the Holy Grail, but we only speak of the possibility in hushed voices). After a brief hands-on, we’re left even more excited about the capabilities of the iPhone gaming platform, though a bit skeptical of the game’s unique control scheme.

NailGun Mod Has Emphasis On The Gun Part

Gizmodo AU

If Home Improvement was still on the air, this is exactly the kind of modified tool Tim Allen would have used to create an entire episode’s worth of grunting wombat noises. He may even have shot that sidekick of his, Al, for minutes worth of canned laughter.

Tool and machine gun fan David Wiggins created the mod in response to another machine-nail-gun he saw online. He didn’t think twice about it after having just picked up a new M16 (as you do).

Apparently is can drive a nail through a 2 x 4 at 200 yards. Not that you’d want to try that, of course. In any case, I highly doubt that DeWalt will be looking to bring this new line to market – at least not in Australia. Maybe in gun-loving America, but not down under.

Review: The Magnetic Forcefield Tech in Batman: Gotham Knight

Batman: Gotham Knight has been hailed as a collection of Batman short stories in Anime form. I enjoyed the highly stylized treatments of batman as a robot, a living shadow and a man, but I was surprisingly delighted to see the amount of high technology featured in one short in particular, Field Test, where Batman repurposes a satellite’s failed magnetic gyroscope prototype into a bullet deflecting force field, shown in this video.

Exclusive: Wii Sports Resort With MotionPlus Is US$49 In Spring

A Nintendo exec told us that the Wii Sports Resort will be US$49.99 when it’s released next Spring. This next version of Wii Sports comes with the MotionPlus accessory, which gives people a true 1:1 motion mirroring on their WiiMotes. The price of the MotionPlus accessory on its own is undetermined, but it seems like Wii Sports Resort is the new Wii Play in that people will buy it because they want the accessory it comes with.
