10 Extremely Unusual Burglar Alarms
Posted by Sean Fallon at 8:30 AM on July 17, 2008
The quest to protect ourselves and our property from thieves has given rise to some of the most bizarre and deadly devices ever conceived by man. OObject has compiled 10 burglar alarms that fit neatly in this category with devices that range from a mousetrap alarm that managed to capture a couple of schoolyard criminals "green handed," to a gramaphone alarm from 1939 that dials a telephone number and plays a message from the record when tripped. Ingenious. [OObject]

Though spring-gun type traps are illegal in the U.S., I will always marvel at the ingenuity of those bent on protecting what they think is valuable.
This Pez Dispenser collection protected by motion sensing AK. Intruders Beware!

15 years ago, I dreamt-up an alarm that triggered a MiniDisc player. The indexed audio would verbally tell you which security zone has been breached: "THE PATIO DOOR HAS BEEN OPENED...THE PATIO DOOR HAS BEEN OPENED..."

Liked the Mousetrap kid's story. Now that's ingenuity!

I like the old beer bottle burglar alarm. Of course, I am referring to the beer bottle cannon from the other day. 300+mph Heiny bottles FTW!

I cannot begin to speak to the lameness of this anti-gadgetry posting. These burglar alarms are very, very lame. And as for their unusual-ness... They are quite lame. Most of those alarms involved shooting something. I think I can invent something way more awesome... like a device that topsy tales a woman's hair when tripped. That would be unusual.. and awesome. But in the end, it would still be lame.

@VoidingWarranties:
Simple enough. You'd want to use an IR laser, shine it into the wiimote's camera. You'd set up your software to sound the alarm when the beam is broken. Trivial, really, compared to the other stuff he's been doing.

When I was little I drew up an elaborate diagram of a contraption that dropped things on people's heads when they stepped on a certain part of the floor. I never got to test to see if it worked because my parents didn't like the idea of me sawing the floor open, but I remembering it being pretty sense-making.

#7 on that list is actually a mouse trap, my dad has the exact same one but in better condition. I suppose you could rig it as a theft deterent by tying a string to a window but according the the maker it is definitely intended to be a mouse trap. What better way to exterminate vermin than to shoot them with a .32 caliber black powder mouse trap, then inadvertantly shoot yourself in the foot as the bullet continues its path after killing the mouse!
