Iran State Media Used Photoshop to Make Missile Tests Look More Impressive
11:52PM Adam Frucci | Gizmodo readers aren’t the only people who love digitally altering photos using Photoshop — so does Iranian state media! You may have seen the above photo yesterday, which features four scary missiles being fired off as a test/example of the size of Iran’s dick. Guess what? One of those missiles is a fake. Here’s what the original photo looks like: More »

11:38PM Seamus Byrne | There are now over 250 in the queue, backing twice around corners and potentially heading toward meeting the start of the queue on George St if people keeping arriving. The BIG news is there are 500 iPhone 3G available at this store, so being in the queue might be a little crazy, but it is definitely a GOOD thing if you want one today.
Apparently Whirlpool forums have had people thinking the store closes at 2am. WRONG. It stays open through until business Friday and until end of day. But by then I doubt they’ll have any units left here. Elsewhere? Who knows. More »

How to Install the iPhone 2.0 Update Right Now
11:27PM Matt Buchanan | The iPhone 2.0 update, which will let you install those fancy apps, is live right now, but you have to install it on your iPhone manually. It’s easy though. Click here to download the iPhone 2.0 firmware. Then in iTunes, hold down the option key while clicking “Check for Update”, but don’t forget to make that one-time back up first, or you’ll lose all your data. We’ve tested it, and it’s all good. If you wanna wait ’til it’s super automatic, that’s cool too, it shouldn’t be too long now. iPod touch owners have to wait until it’s onsale for US$9.95 though. Note: Unlocked phones will brick out if you install the 2.0 update. [Apple via Mac Rumors] More »

iPhone App Store: eBooks for 99 US Cents a Pop
11:10PM Matt Buchanan | Clever: Taking novels in the public domain, re-boxing them, and selling them in the iTunes App Store for a buck a pop. It’s mostly stuff you had to read in high school, like Dickens and Edith Wharton, but there’s also a whole mess of Tarzan novels in there too. The text looks crisp and readable, even if the book itself isn’t necessarily. It’s no Kindle, but not a bad start to the iPhone eBook industry. [iTunes via BoingBoing Gadgets] More »

Medialets Ad Network First For iPhone Platform, Will Throw Ads Into Free Apps
11:09PM John Mahoney | There are already a ton of free apps in the store (134 to be exact), but ad startup Medialets is hoping to increase that number by providing a platform-wide ad network so developers can easily launch ad-supported free apps. Revenue will be split between devs and Medialets, with none apparently going to Apple (MobileBurn is reporting that Medialets’s CEO is buds with Jobs from the NEXT days and has the capo’s blessing) . Nobody has quite figured out the mobile advertising game on a large enough scale to do anything big, and having your pretty iPhone apps marred with Busted T’s creative might be less than ideal, so it will be interesting to see how many developers jump aboard. Apple TV 2.1 Update Adds Remote App and Mobile Me Support
11:02PM Matt Buchanan | Apple TV 2.1 is out via Software Update. It adds two things: Support for the Remote app for the iPhone and iPod touch (awesome), and support for MobileMe. Hoo. Ray. [iLounge] More »

11:01PM Seamus Byrne | The call “that makes 200″ rang out at 10.30pm, and there are still plenty more people rolling up. The cab driver on the way in had already heard about the fuss down here at Hunter St, but didn’t know what it was about.
“The iPhone goes on sale at midnight.”
“Ooooh… I hear that’s a bloody good phone!”
Naturally, a lot of the late arrivals are scoping the joint, looking for a weak link where they can jump the queue. To them, I say, GET TO THE BACK YOU *TARDS!!

Sidekick Gekko Is Now Sidekick 2008
10:58PM Mark Wilson | The Sidekick that had been known as Gekko shall henceforth be called Sidekick 2008. Yes, it may be the first time since the year 2000 that we’re sticking the date in a product name, but it’s a trend we’ve so missed. Other than that, we just have a few more blurry-and-therefore-trustworthy leaked shots of the device for your perusal. The front’s not bad, but the back is mighty colourful: More »

iPhone Apps We Like: Sketches
10:54PM Brian Lam | Sketches is a simple drawing tool for the iPhone. What’s cool is that you can now use it to draw boogers, mustaches, and devil horns on your friends. [iPhone App Store] More »

9:09PM Nick Broughall | Okay, so it might not be the 10th, with Christchurch and Wellington also opening at Midnight, but it’s the tenth from Auckland, and that’s all that really matters, isn’t it?
This particular iPhone 3G belongs to the guys from Polar Bear Farm, developers of the Telegram application you can find in the Staff Picks section of the App Store. We’ll look at that a bit later tonight (or tomorrow morning, as it may be).
We’re with the guys from Polar Bear Farm trying to get their iPhone 3G online and downloading apps from the App Store, but the process isn’t as smooth as you would expect – there seems to be a few dramas with the payment process for purchasing apps. Whether this is limited to New Zealand or not is yet to be seen, but it’s a problem not restricted just here.
