World Gets iPhone and Multiple Carriers per Country, Canada Stops Whining
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 11:00 AM on June 10, 2008
Yes, this is another iPhone post, but embrace it with true love, because it means two things: one, no more damn "iPhone to be available in [insert name of some weird country here]" articles ever again (stop writing to us, Canada.) And two: you get to see We Are the World one more time. It also means a third new thing: the use of multiple carriers in many countries, an strategy change that may signal a move away from exclusivity in the future.
As you already know, Apple has laid out plans to take over the planet, and put all those barbarians out there under the New World Order. The list of countries and carriers is:
• México: América Móvil
• United States: AT&T
• India: Bharti Airtel
• Philippines: Globe Telecom
• Hong Kong: Hutchison Telecom
• UK & Ireland: O2
• Portugal: Orange and Vodafone
• Austria: Orange and T-Mobile
• France: Orange
• Switzerland: Orange and Swisscom
• Canada: Rogers (wheeeeeee)
• Singapore: SingTel
• Japan: Softbank
• Italy: Telecom Italia and Vodafone
• Spain: Telefónica
• Denmark: TeliaSonera
• Finland: TeliaSonera
• Norway: TeliaSonera
• Sweden: TeliaSonera
• Germany: T-Mobile
• Netherlands: T-Mobile
• Australia: Vodafone and Optus
• New Zealand: Vodafone
Of course, it may just be that those countries have special market conditions that require two carriers. In any case, it's good to see that Apple has no problems implementing both models, specially since the iPhone requires special services in the provider's side, like Visual Voicemail.

Anyway did someone say something about multiple carriers?

Well at least more than a dozen people will buy the iPhone in Canada. Unlike the Zune announcement for Canada. I think some people paid attention. About 8 or 9 of them for the Zune.

as far as the "exclusivity" you know people can travel the world, see some cool shit, and perhaps buy a phone as the rest of the world does.
by list price, sim card based services that you only pay for what you use.
rather then this 50 bucks a month no mater how often you use it locked for 2 years shit.

Hurray for Rogers and their 60GB cap on hi-speed internet (up yo 95GB) where 5 PS3 demos uses 1/6 of your total bandwidth that month. Where renting 10 movies for your Apple TV uses 1/3 of the bandwidth.
Now we trust them with the data plan of the iPhone, damn we're going to be paying out the rear.

For those of you young 'uns only born in the 1980s, here's a rundown of who the artists are in the video above and what they're famous for now, so that you too can follow along:
(In order of appearance)

- Stevie Wonder - Blind, black piano player/singer that came AFTER the blind, black piano player/singer that Jamie Foxx played before that horrible Stealth movie
- Paul Simon - Old guy who married Edie Birkel
- Kenny Rogers - Hocks Indian gaming and fried chicken
- Tina Turner - Ike Turner's punching bag
- Billy Joel - Guy who keeps drunk driving and crashing in Long Island
- Michael Jackson - Used to be a black man, now a white woman, was on trial for diddling little kids
- Diana Ross - Busted for drunk driving outside Tucson after she found out they don't serve booze at Canyon Ranch
- Dionne Warwick - Hosts Psychic Friends Network
- Willie Nelson - Old cowboy dude who can't seem to pay his taxes
- Al Jarreau - Don't worry, you'll never hear of him again
- Bruce Springsteen - Did that Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 1 promotional video
- Kenny Loggins - Hey, he's the gopher from Caddyshack, right?
- Steve Perry - Got replaced as Journey's lead singer by a guy from YouTube
- Daryl Hall - Playing at your local summer fairgrounds with his non-mustachio-ed partner, the poster boy against male plastic surgery
- Huey Lewis - You know, Back to the Future!
- Cyndi Lauper - Think Britney Spears, but the drama is all fake (like wrestling)
- Kim Carnes - See Al Jarreau above
- Bob Dylan - That mumbling guy from XM Radio's Theme Time Radio Hour program
- Ray Charles - Blind, black piano player/singer that Jamie Foxx played before that horrible Stealth movie

Personally I find Fido is better (definitely in terms of customer service) but any talk of them may be presumptive.
After speaking with a Fido rep I found they have not been given any information other than the fact that Rogers (their parent company) will be releasing the iPhone. They have not been told they will be getting it let alone given a date.
Knowing Rogers I expect they'll want to cover their own flagship customer base first and only if the demand is high enough and the stock to go around will Fido get it (did I mention I dislike Rogers)

hmmm, Portugal Vodafone and Orange? They just took the 2 smalles carriers. What about tmn and Optimus? Well, whatever. I'm outsourced to PT's/tmn's internet portal, so I was hoping for a decent discount here, but at 299 USD max (probably 250 EUR) there is not much more need for a discount.
On another note (literally). The song is, musically, lyrically and in arrangement pretty meh (nice to listen to at first, but that's about it) but, dude, there are some performers in it. The Bruce is really great and it's always nice to see, and listen to, Cindy Lauper again - what a voice. But even Mr. Jackson and his meandering-in-space voice I am starting to like. Probably means, I am getting old;-)

i am totally bogged by this having AT&T one of the FEW MANY CARRIERS here in the worlds most CAPITALIST NATIONS GLOBAL WIDE is only serving the iphone when it can make a bigger impact business/personal lifestyle with maybe having more than just 1 damn carrier?
i live in los angeles, majority of people here have t-mobile. are they that stupid thinking at&t was gonna represent a good majority of the US population in cellular providers?
hell im also pissed at t-mobile. they are servicing over in germany and we the US people where t-mobile is located at and probably have the most customers they got get squat.
what the hell is wrong with just having the iphone out? any other carriers can provide 3g, data plan, unlimited text and etc.
ain't it enough for apple to get their sales up with such a great pricing they have on the iphone? now they want current at&t customers to force additional 2 year contract for that $200 subsidize? give me a damn break.
i will personally go in to that store buy a iphone 3g, and when they ask me for activation, i pay first and then just snap that phone in front of them.

Your definition of "world" is pretty lame. We're not getting the iPhone here in Taiwan, where most of the thing is actually from, even though we're one of the top economies in the world as well as the source of most of the electronics. If places like Botswana and Uruguay are getting it and we aren't, we're basically not getting it. Thanks, Steve Jobs. You could have been selling 3F iPhones in the mall downstairs from the world's tallest building in Taipei, but instead you not only elected to make it a back alley deal at the night market, you set off a whole torrent of Taiwanese hackers willing to hack your devices. Good luck complaining when that happens. Had we known you'd do this, we'd probably have sabotaged the chips before sending them to Apple.

Will wonders never cease? 3G iPhone unveiled, to be launched in over 70 countries by years end, and I, living in the US still won't be able to buy one. Why you ask? Because I have the nerve (the nerve I tell you), to live in Vermont. Other countries are getting multiple carriers, but the US? Nope, we get stuck with just AT&T which is far from nation wide. This may be just more pointless whining, but all the one year birthday of the iPhone does is remind me that I have another 4 years to wait until the AT&T exclusive iPhone contract in the US is over.

@Brian: South Africa has a much better celphone infrastructure than Canada. It helps that it's a lot smaller, that they never had analogue or CDMA and that the landline service is so bad that almost everyone is giving up on it and going cellular only, not just the young'uns. I spent three weeks criss-crossing the country and the ONLY time I didn't have signal on my Blackberry was for a day in some wilderness camp in the Drakensbergs.

199? that's pretty cheap imo. many 'regular' phones especially in asia are priced much higher than that. for 199 you'd only get mediocre earthling phones.
but of course if you look into its spec iPhone 3G is really not that great. most phones have 3G now. so you're paying for the GPS and the design then... (and the brand of course). not bad tho.

Surely as soon as this is jailbroken and unlocked you are able to use it on any network? I live in the UK and am with 3G the service provider, as soon as this is unlocked, all you gotta do is stick your new sim card in and thats that. You might not have access to the 3G speed internet use without it costing a lot of money but its still an iPhone on a different network.
Really am suprised at all these problems and how people are so upset that the iPhone is not available in their country, its just importing the damn thing and unlocking.

Belgium was also listed with the "Lucky 22". In Belgium however there is a law that prohibits the sale of one product coupled with another product (dutch "koppelverkoop", loosely translated as "connected sales"). Basically it means that you cannot sell 2 products (a phone and a subscription) together unless you also offer the option to buy them separately. Mobistar (Orange subsidiary) seems to be the carrier of preference by Apple, but they have already denied that they will be ready by July 11 (see http://www.dvhardware.net/article27852.html). In India Vodafone will also be an iPhone 3G distributor, next to Airtel, according to Hindustan Times (http://www.hindustantimes.com/StoryPage/StoryPage.aspx?id=895d6492-2eb9-4d1f-848f-24666e1cf167&MatchID1=4706&TeamID1=6&TeamID2=7&MatchType1=2&SeriesID1=1188&PrimaryID=4706&Headline=iPhone+3G+coming+soon+to+India ) Apart from those minor inaccuracies, kudos for the report! menneke

Obviously they won't be releasing an unlocked version in the USA, but what will the price be for an unlocked 3G in the UK and France? Gonna be there for a few months so it might be worth it just to get it across the pond so I don't have to turn off my data when I get there.

@jmprado: actually, there are the first 22 countries. they'll get the iPhone July 11th (expect France, that'll have it July 17th).
but Brazil IS one of the 70 countries that will have it by the end of the year. on Claro (América Móvil), Vivo (Telefónica + Portugal Telecom), and maybe TIM (Telecom Italia).
