Video: Teen Brutally Beats Bus Passenger for iPhone
Posted by Mark Wilson at 4:32 AM on June 21, 2008
As reported from an NBC affiliate, this surveillance video (from May 21st) has just been released that depicts a particularly vicious attack on a Columbus, OH, bus--all to acquire an iPhone. A hooded teen lunges at a man who was wearing headphones on his way off the bus. No one did anything to stop the attack (not that you can blame a woman with child for not stepping in). Surprisingly, despite sustaining injury from blows to the face and body, the passenger did not lose his iPhone. Anyone with info on the teen is asked to call 614-645-8477. [WCMH via Macblogz]

I used to work for the Bus line in Colorado and they tell the driver not to get involved. Policy is that they call the supervisor and have security come in. Although in reality it is sort of the drivers call. The guy who got me the job was also my sensei and he always had great stories from his days as a supervisor. I don't blame anyone for not helping guy could have had a gun, knife or been high on Angel Dust.

If he had gotten away with the iPhone, he would have had to beat someone else up for the charger and accessories. It's a vicious cycle.

Bah, this is one of those viral videos, like that Wii Hula Hoop Girl. Apple's just trying to make it appear that people go crazy and beat the crap out of you for an Iphone, because that's...good....marketing....
......yeah, maybe Apple didn't think this through.

This just happened in my neighborhood in Philadelphia. Unfortunately the young man that was attacked died after the robbery. He was nabbed on his way home from his job at Starbucks in center city, apparently because the white earbuds, which the attacker went for and ended up shooting him and killing him for. The killer didn't take money or anything else, just the iphone/ipod.

@Pope John Peeps II: No. I don't. At all.
@ps61318:
1) He totally set himself up to get stripped. I see it all the time...I mean, hear about it, especially given 1st 2).
2nd 2) He was clearly giving off "not tough enough" vibe, otherwise that l'il punk wouldn't have messed with him. I'm guessing the kid saw Coldplay on the touchscreen and he figured this would be a gimme. (Coldplay? Zuuuuune.)
3) No. She should have taken the stroller with her and the baby. Or taken the stroller and left the baby - he's less likely to steal the baby.
4) Which is exactly why his friends would have laughed at him.
5) Right? It's really cool!

Couple of thoughts come to mind. One -- bite this kid? Uh, yeah, prolly can't get any diseases from a kid willing to beat up a total stranger on the bus for an iPhone. Two -- concealed carry is legal in Ohio, IIRC (I live here), however, virtually every business establishment on the planet (can't imagine COTA would be any different) have signage prohibiting weapons. Whether or not signage makes it illegal, I don't know (I know that certain establishments such as banks and bars it is actually a violation of statute). Third -- it's a phone. Given the choice of a potentially life-threatening situation and losing $600, I would chose the latter. Fourth -- I'm a pretty large person (6'2"; 235 lbs. less than 15% bodyfat) with martial arts training, and given the situation, I probably would have handed over my iPhone, mostly because there's no way of knowing if this kid has a gun. Last -- that same bit of wisdom (does the kid have a gun) applies to the by-standers.
It's very easy to sit back and say what folks should have done. In the moment, hopefully people think clearly enough to understand the potential risks.

The whole "people stand around while someone gets their ass kicked" shouldn't shock anyone. Most people avoid confrontation and are easily intimidated by violence. Bus drivers are the worse too:
I had a guy try and mug me while I was getting on a bus many years ago. Even though I kicked him in the face and broke his nose, the driver kept the door open like she was waiting for him to get in while I was yelling "Drive!! GOGOGO!!". Then she asked, "Is your friend getting on the bus?" This guy had a knife out too. Of course, nobody helped me out either..but at least I had the pleasure of grabbing the railings and downward kicking that guy out onto the pavement on his ass.
Bay Area people: 16th and Mission is a hotspot for snatch and grab when you are going for your wallet to get on the bus.

@Kaiser-Machead's Chips Ahoy!: You fail to see the problem? How about the increased possibility that ANYONE in the situation could end up dead, not just the assailant. The guy getting jumped was lucky he didn't have a gun, because the chances were just as good that the kid would have grabbed it when he jumped him, and either shot him, or someone else if they struggled over it. Gun fights don't go down like they do in the movies, or in NRA members wet dreams.
Better to just learn how to fight, or run. Unless you're Chuck Norris, no ones round-house ever went off accidentally and killed your only child.

No kidding. I just don't get this at all.
1) WTF did the kid have to take off his hoodie? Did he work up a sweat that fast? Did he think this fight was shirts v. skins? Rule one of stealing sh** on the bus - keep your hoodie on.
2) Why isn't he wearing a t-shirt? You're going to rub your nipples raw wearing a hoodie with no t-shirt. It's just not smart.
2) Hey kid on the ground, who goes around with an iPhone if you're not tough enough to protect your sh**? This is why they make the Zune.
3) Lady with the baby, why are you leaving the stroller up there by Mr. Skins? Can't you see he wants to steal something? You leave your stroller unattended like that, it's going to get stolen.
4) Oh, and Mr. Skins. Steal smart. July 11th you're just gonna have to do this all over again. Why go through all the trouble now for a product that is only going to be outdated. Seriously. Your friends are just going to laugh at you.
5) When did closed circuit television start employing a sepia filter effect? I kind of like it and hope others follow this lead.

Beyond that, I don't think I understand your point: that the assailant could have had a gun, so trying to stop him could have been fatal; or if the victim had a gun he could have defended himself? Either way, concealed carry simply increases the liklihood that someone winds up dead.

I will that "Mug me White" was a thing of the past, but a guy who lived here in Philly for less than a month was killed over an iPod a few blocks away last week.
It's tragic as hell, but that's why "straightedge" is one of the fastest growing gangs in America right now. People are tired of inner-city crime that grows worse every year due to our silent consent for fear of retaliation.
I do not advocate gang violence but I do support strength in numbers and self defense.

I was robbed at gunpoint once. Not for an iPod, but for like 700 dollars belonging to the store I was closing up. I had to walk to the bank, and the guy was waiting outside the store. He asked me to give him the money, and I just laughed at him. Then he pulled out the gun and asked if I thought it was a joke. I told him I did think he was joking. At this point, he grabbed me and threw me up against a wall and had the gun ready. I still refused to give up the money. In the end, he just snatched it and ran.
Moral of story: kids with guns are pussies.

I'm not afraid of blacks. However, I'm wary of people, irregardless of race, that continue to put themselves into the stereotypical situations. I mean, beating someone up for a phone so you can; you know, make 100 bucks at the nearest pawn shop or pass it off to a friend. Great way to treat fellow man.
What I find funny, is people would probably consider me racist because I'm unable to treat shitheads like this with any sort of respect or "equality" (what a useless word).

@ps61318: Huh? What's already legal in Ohio? ... being a bash-you-in-the-head-and-steal-your-iPhone-douchebag? That explains why nobody did anything, I guess. The two words I used were specifically meant to be ambiguous, and you missed the third, fourth, and fifth possibilities, so let me hand them to you.
3) Someone else on the bus could have been carring a weapon of some kind, ideally a pistol because a pistol registers as a greater threat and does so at a greater distance.
4) Carrying a concealed weapon does not mean that the weapon has to be a gun -- taser, kubotan, pointy stick (pencil or pen) are all other possiblities. Dare I say fist?
5) How 'bout carrying one's iPhone in a concealed manner? How about not using those white earbuds?
Regardless, there's this assumption that if you carry a weapon -=any weapon=- that you're out to kill. This is a false premise. The threat of death, or even an increase in its likelihood, is a pretty good motivator for someone to change their behavior. The threat of a good ol' beating is just as good.
Whether you threaten with death or serious injury or a black eye, just threatening with your pissed-off presence is enough to change the dynamic of a violent situation. I'm 5'10'', 210, and I can pick up and throw most people my size.
Hypothetically, if I saw you beating some dude for an iPhone, and I get up and move at you with pissed-off purpose, you're going to acknowledge me and I'm going to force you to acknowledge me. This makes it a 2-on-1 situation and most people will run from that.
Ultimately, having the aggressor or the victim run away is the best outcome, and a 2-on-1 lets that happen. Besides, if you're the guy that comes to help the victim, the aggressor is already tired and the work will be easier. You can't be afraid of getting hurt, though. The victim wasn't, in this case.

Locke's famous quote was altered in the Declaration of Independence, but the principle is the same. We have a right to defend our property. True, the right to life supersedes that of property (or happiness if you want to take the Declaration's version) in Locke's mind, but you lose that right, along with the right to liberty, when you seek to violate the rights of others.

If he pulled the gun out and aimed it at him before the beating, and the kid walked away, but he still shot that would be punishable. RE: Concealed Carry
I not only have a permit to carry concealed, I actively carry. To whatever ass hinted at the notion that concealed carry would have made this situation any better is a moron. I hope to God he doesn't actually have a license.
Where to begin.
The piece of shit that attacked the man did not use lethal force. Under Massachusetts law, using lethal force in that situation in defense would not be justified. I can't speak to Ohio's state laws. In MA you can't use lethal force unless you are in "danger of your life or in grave bodily harm".
From a practical standpoint, while someone's beating the shit out of you: drawing a firearm, using it effectively, and not having it taken from you are all difficult to do.
My own response would've been to use pepper spray. I never carry lethal force (handgun) without a non-lethal alternative. If the situation is such that you need to defend yourself, but not so bad that you need to shoot someone, then you need a non-lethal alternative. Also, as mentioned before, while getting the shit beat out of you, it's easier to use pepper spray than a gun. Worse case scenario you incapacitate yourself and he gets the iPhone, but at least you tried. That's a better worst case scenario than someone winding up dead over an iPhone. Best case, you spray him and call the authorities. This way no one's dead and the perp is apprehended.
And don't forget to step on his balls (by accident of course) while getting up.
And to all you hippie fairies out there, not all of use gun-toting citizens are "out to get me some". We just acknowledge that there's danger out there and try to be prepared. Of course, on that note, he shouldn't have had his shiny expensive toy out in plain view to begin with.

@ninjagin: Yeah, agreed about the numbers thing. This one time me and a group of friends were walking past all these frat houses. We were a mixed group of guys and girls, not drunk, just walking and talking. We pass this dude sitting on a couch in a frat house lawn, drinking beer. He sees us and says something like "woo!" My friend says "wooo!" back, like "yeah, party man, sweeeet!"
But the frat boy takes it as mockery and chucks his half-full beer bottle at us. It hits one of the girls in the head. My friend loses it and charges the guy. Frat boy happens to be hewn from stone and just throws my friend across the lawn, like 10 feet. He runs over, grabs my friend and gets ready to wail on him. I run up, all 130 pounds of me, along with another guy (150 pounds), fists balled, eyebrows furled.
I put my hand on his shoulder, which is like a side of beef. This frat boy could've just broke me in half. But the prospect of fighting three dudes mellowed him right out. Suddenly he was apologizing for being so drunk and we were like "yeah, you need to chill out dude, we didn't mean to diss you."
But I'm still thankful he did clobber me. I would've gotten drain bammage, for sure.

More likely than not, these people frothing at the mouth and creaming their pants for more talk of revenge and retribution, don't live in areas of high crime.

I'm now much bigger, stronger and far far better trained. I am by personality and inclination, the type who steps into situations like this.
HAVING SAID THAT:
a) what, the iPhoner is supposed to own but not use his shiney toy? Those who suggested that are stupid;
b) there has been a lot of press recently on all the stabbings in the UK -- fatal stabbings, often of people who STEPPED INTO CONFRONTATIONS;
c) Killing someone for trying to rob you is illegal and whether you're tried by 12 or merely before a grand jury, you will lose. And if he's merely beating you and you kill him, you will lose unless you can plant a knife on him and convince someone that those aren't REALLY your fingerprints all over the handle/blade;
d) Last fight I was in ended in a draw. I called the cops. They caught him. He claimed I jumped him. We both were marked up so the stinkin' LA Sheriff said, "I can take you both in or let you both go."
"Next time, I will not lose." -- Inego Montoya.
The unfortunate part of all the martial arts training I now have is that I cannot really get in fights. "People of the jury, Gyffes has over 20 years of martial arts training: what he did to this poor boy could have been avoided..."
And, lastly, I shall leave you with Jesse Jackson's greatest current sorrow (true story): "that when I hear steps behind me and realize it's not a black man, I am relieved."
Assholes come in all colors. Cheney's white, isn't he? Look how many people he's robbed and killed.

@phlavor: Yes, I have heard of that: apparently, there are these things called jobs that give people money to buy whatever they want. And not only that, if you want more money than your current job pays, you can get one that pays more.
If you want or need a formal college education so you can get the job you want, you can go to college. And here is the really amazing part: if you don't have enough money to go to college, people will give you money to go and if that isn't enough, people will loan you what you need to make up the difference.
So could things be different for criminals if they had more education? Sure, but there are plenty of uneducated people in the world who are not violent or thieves let alone both. We all make our own choices and this little fucker chose to be a violent criminal.

Dude, you are the first trained martial artist I've heard say that. We teach that to all our students. Doesn't matter how long they've been to class, they're now "trained in self defense, they should have been able to handle the situation without killing the person", even if the bastard deserved it.

You can't blame people for being scared in a situation like this and it is quite possible that a violent thief would be armed, but it is also possible that people just didn't know what was going on. People get into fights all the time and people around them might not be able to tell a robbery from some other altercation nor villain from victim. Of course, when a beating goes on as long as this one, it may become clear which person is then the aggressor regardless of how things started and what other people know or don't know about how things started.
That all said, it seems most unfortunate that someone did not give that violent criminal his well-earned turn at receiving a savage beating.

This is why my friends and I coined the term "hoodbooger", which we promptly put on www.urbandictionary.com.
It's stupid, uneducated f**ks like that who make the world scary. Its not about race, or gender, or who your momma is... it's the kind of person you choose to be. Honestly, if I were that bus driver, I would have started trying to mow the little beyotch over the moment he hopped off the bus.

Such incidents are reasons why in case of theft we need the ability to not only track our iPhone but also the option to remote wipe the data. Since the iPhone 3G will have GPS and the ability to remote wipe data it will make it easier for the law to catch and prosecute idiots such as the attacker in the video. A reminder for those getting an iPhone to use the option to PIN lock your device. That way if it is jacked you don't have to worry about the carrier being only able to lock the SIM card.

Yikes. I live in Ohio and go to OSU. Those COTA buses always seemed rather unsavory to me.
I'll be on edge when I get on that bus ever again, ready to own anyone who so much as flinches in my general direction.

that video makes me physically ill. a flying sidekick would have been nice from anyone. honestly, i don't know what i'd do in that situation aside from just stopping the violence. i'm also martial arts trained, but in order to maintain peace, one must sometimes engage in violent acts. i feel sorry for the victim. i have no pity for the assailant. all punks should be unpunked by a vigilant crowd determined on doing what is right.
stand up for each other america. we're on the downward spiral towards violence and disrespect.

It's all apples fault. If those bone heads didn't gimp the phones bluetooth, he could have been chillin listening to music with some wireless headphones that weren't white. avoiding the beat down. Klingon boy would have assumed there crappy fm radio headphones from the 80's.

@thebear91: [www.nytimes.com] I guess we're both a bit wrong according to this article.
However, I've seen a bunch of testimony on the tubez by corrections officers saying my explanation is the origin, but that's not really the issue. More disturbing is that everyone agrees that it stems from prison culture, yet emulation of that culture through dress/behaviour by teenagers AND adults is a hip thing to do.
