SPult Universal Remote is Sleekly Simple by Ditching Most Buttons
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 10:19 PM on June 23, 2008
Designer Yurii Smitana Perfilov clearly took a look at the chaotic button-fest that is the usual universal remote and thought "uuuugleee." So the first thing you notice about the sPult remote is its gorgeousness, like a retro-futuristic digital dagger. The second thing is the lack of buttons: that scroll wheel does volume or channels, selected at a push, and there's a favourites selector, mute and power function plus a simple display. I thought the back-lit Moto RAZR-like universal remote I just bought was attractive, but if sPult were more than a concept, I'd ditch that silver laser-keypad nastiness in a heartbeat. The designer has not read a review of the BMW iDrive. About the only company that can take a device down to a single button and make it functional are those fruits in Cupertino.

@N@tedog:
They say that real beauty comes from the inside, I guess this one's still ugly then.
Jam-packed with the same electronics that are housed inside the regular universal remotes - at least those are being straight with us.

@N@tedog: It also looks like a woman's shoe from the side, it's just missing a couple of straps

so i have to push a button to then use the scroll wheel to change my channel, then push button again to go back to the scroll wheel in order to lower the volume when that annoying loud local car dealership commercial comes on?
or did i read it wrong?

OOOh minimalist.
(Should be expensive if it hits the light of day.)

Yes, it's gorgeous. Until you touch it with a fat, cheeto-colored manfinger, only to smear away its good looks in order to raise the volume on American Idol......or football.

Gizmodo concept posts are about the most frustrating things in the world. I think I may need a new Yahoo Pipe filter...

To be honest, on the stock zapper we got with our TV, I only use about 6 controls: volume, channel, aspect ratio, source, previous channel and info. Nothing else.
The most frustrating thing is having to surf 120 channels from ch 12 to 87, just to check on the ten favourites. If this proto-Stilleto heel zapper can let me hotkey my favs with customizable buttons, I'm very happy to pay money for it.

@Denver_80203: Speaking of Bluetooth, at first glance, the profile shot looks like a Bluetooth headset. For a giant.

I am still waiting for a universal that operates multiple TV's.

@Vastad: You obviously don't have TiVo; TiVo can be set to only cycle through favorite channels when you channel surf or use the guide.

But with a tivo, why would you be channel surfing ;)
/tivo can make unwanted channels disappear from your channel listing (buh bye lifetime).

@Monty: You forgot that Audi took BMW's concept and made the user interface actually usable.

Channels can skip that fast? Scrolling through the channels we have these days sounds like an hassle. Making it too sensitive will take us forever to land on the right channel.
People with big hands are gonna have trouble gripping that.
The view from the front looks alright though :)

@recklessinoz: yes, for the toe inclined, I can now use my toes and harness the power of the universal remote while I am beating eggs.
