Sony Ericsson Cancels Paris and BeiBei Smartphones
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 10:45 PM on June 27, 2008
Sony Ericsson's Paris, much coveted by S-E purists, has been canned, according to the Unofficial Sony Ericsson Blog. The Paris, aka the P5i, has been filed under T (for trash) alongside its sister smartphone, the BeiBei, or the G702. Apparently it's to do with the less-than-enthusiastic reactions from some of the mobile phone bloggers, who weren't exactly gagging for it. There's also speculation that a lot of its features were already lagging behind those of its competitors--and this is before it had even hit the streets. I guess we'll never have Paris. I still find Sony Ericssons a pleasure to use, I don't think smartphones are their strong point though. At least until the X1 shows up that is.

Is this canning not because UIQ has been stabbed and then handed over to the symbian foundation, and hence SE are washing their hands of the whole thing? I thought the new win mobile direction was a big giveaway...

If these less than enthusiastic bloggers are anything like me, SE smartphones were simply a stopgap while waiting for a 3G iphone. As nice as my P1i is, its days are numbered.

(Well, it looks like we may have a visit from the Mighty Thor and his Banhammer today...)
Anyway, I'll take the easy one: Bye bye to the BeiBei.
And perhaps Bogey was wrong: We won't always have Paris.
ramblin' man.....

After using a few Windows Mobile phones for a year and a half (HTC), I was looking forward to this mobile. Similar functionality in a smaller size. My feelings for WM based phones are lukewarm at best. Love the choice of applications (especially the internet apps), but the core mobile functions (phone, text, contacts) just don't match in perceived speed and experience what I had with SE mobiles. Typing a text message with a touch screen is teh suck, no matter what device (yes I've tried the Jesus phone). If you say otherwise you are fooling yourselves. Yes I text a ton so it's important to me. The qwerty-ish keyboard is a good compromise (Yes I've tried it. often). The X1 (being the only smarter mobile option I see worthy at the moment) is nice but still too big in my eyes. Besides sounding selfish, all I was hoping was that Sony finally were going to put a product out that fit in between the cheaper dumb mobiles and expensive smart mobile that had specs I'd be ok with. Since when did A-GPS become more important than standard mobile telephone functions? Don't people use TomTom anymore?

Well it's certainly not much to look at, but i wonder just how much influence blogger reviews had in it getting the deep six. If it's as much as it sounds then i wish Chrysler would start following suit.

The G702 is already for sale over in China at least. Weird that they're pulling it once it's been shipped. Unless of course my memory is completely gone, then I'm thinking of a different phone all together. I'll check once I get home - I'm curious.

It's true, they just couldn't get UIQ up to where S60 is despite the touchscreen interface. They'll do just fine with the new Symbian when they basically get the new improved S60. The foray into Windows Mobile is a stop gap and likely not sustainable since they are basically relying on HTC there. HTC, will basically make better versions with their own brand like HTC touch pro. They'll come around once the new Symbian platform is ready to go.
