Sony Ericsson C905 8.1-Megapixel Cybershot Phone Gets Official Specs
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 1:20 AM on June 18, 2008
Twice we've brought you leaked info on Sony Ericsson's upcoming C905 mobile phone, and today at last Sony came good with official specs. The camera in its slider body is indeed an 8.1-megapixel one, with xenon flash, auto-focus, face detection and image stabilisation. The phone's also pretty full-featured, and is GPS-ready, with a 2.4-inch TFT screen and TV-out capability as we'd heard. So is it a camera with a bolt-on phone or the other way around? Read the specs in the press release to decide. Simultaneously, Sony came up with news of the S302 Snapshot, which sounds like a lower-spec sibling to the C905 with just 2-megapixels and a fixed-focus lens. Both should be available late this year.

Singapore, 17 June 2008 - The C905 is Sony Ericsson's first Cyber-shot slider and its most advanced camera phone yet. With an 8.1 megapixel camera and real camera flash amongst its cutting-edge capabilities, it offers easy photo-taking in a phone that derives its looks from a digital camera and offers the picture quality to match. In comparison the S302 Snapshot is for those who want it all at an affordable price - good looks, must-have features and a pocket-sized slim design.
"The C905 Cyber-shot™ and S302 Snapshot have been developed to make us all better photographers! That means making it easier to take great shots and never missing that magic moment." said Sven Totté, Head of Imaging Marketing at Sony Ericsson. "Although both have photography at their core, the phones are very distinct; the 8.1megapixel C905 is a viable alternative to a digital camera and the S302 is perfect for those who don't want to miss a moment and like to send or Bluetooth™ their photos to their friends."

Come to think of it, maybe they'll release this with the new Bond movie.

The C905 comes in a C905a version, doesn't that mean it'll hit North America?

@Brock: What do you need 5-6MP on a cell phone for? No optical zoom, horrible autofocus...eh, good luck on that.

@TOWken22: Yes. The iPhone is sweet as hell, but the camera on it is barely deserving the name. 8.1 MP may be too much, but 2 MP is too little, and the lack of flash and autofocus severely limit its usefulness.
For this phone I'd have been fine with 5-6 MP as long as you kept the other features. It's really too bad the Snapshot doesn't have them.
For me, having an internet browser is nice, but having a phone, a GPS map program and a non-crappy camera are the really key features. Phones aren't a computer, and you don't need always all the same features.

@kborer22: No optical zoom! I didn't even notice that as I thought it was a given! That's really stupid. I'm NOT going to buy two of these now, whereas before I just wasn't going to buy one.

The form factor on this phone appears to match the w910, meaning, it's full of win. Can't wait to get my hands on this. Lord knows when that'll be, since retailers in the states don't actually, you know, retail.
sigh.
anyway, kborer, optical zoom on a camera phone would break the world.

How come Sony Ericsson loves them some screens that are smaller than 2.8"? I think 2.8" is the definitive perfect sweet spot for cameras that oh I dunno, have all these megapixels but are wasted on small screens...

I know you got it right some of the time, but Sony Ericsson is not Sony. It's a 50:50 joint venture. It's wrong to refer to it as Sony.
Of course the C905 probably has more Sony than Ericsson content as Ericsson don't make cameras.

@Carmen is VERY sick: I agree about the megapixel thing, but the other [camera] features of the phone are what make it impressive.

I like how these phones are being designed to compete in alternate market segments and not trying to just play catch-up to the iPhone. The C905 looks awesome and is truly a great phone for people who like taking [good] photos but don't want to have to carry around a separate camera everywhere they go. Just wish these would come out in the US market.

Why would you use a camera phone to take skydiving pictures?
Are they advertising the essential cell phone helmet mounting kit?

@chrstphr: speaking of Bond, Pierce Brosnan's 007 career was shortlived, IMHO.
that blue phone looks like every other SE candybar on the market right now.. I call for an extreme makeover... The slider however is nice :) I really like the curved top and bottom...

I have to get me one of those online blogsites.
GPS with a quality camera would be great. It's too bad the phone itself seems a bit pedestrian.

i think its a toss up between this and the upcoming n96. although the camera on this is better, the n96 just looks like a better phone overall.

I like this very much... style, and everything else.
Though I have to say, 8.1 megapixels, or a billion gigapixels... doesn't really matter when you have tiny crappy lenses.
Not that I'm expecting for cellphone cams to be DSLRs, but they shouldn't make it a major selling point.
I know what I'm saying because despite loving SE cellphones, my K850 with 5.1Mpx won't take better pics than my first 3Mpx Fujifilm digicam.
GPS and TV-out are very nice... but I need more specs.
Is video recording any better?
How about video playing? TV-out would be awesome if it plays DivX, Xvid and other formats.
Hope they also used the camera buttons to work with mp3 playing stuff this time... I kinda miss my Walkman phone.

@CutePuppyz: I don't know what your icon is, but it's the cutest fucking thing I've ever seen.
I'll hold out judgement on camera quality, but as it stands, without optical zoom, this won't be a replacement for my N93.
And it sure as hell won't be without Symbian. Give me Symbian!

It is not fair to judge the quality of this phones camera if you haven't owned an SE phone before. I owned a K800i and the picture quality is comparable to point-and-shoot cameras. Definitely loved the Xenon flash. And the lens is not a tiny crappy lens. The iPhone's camera is what's tiny and crappy.

@CutePuppyz:
The logic is more than likely to take good pictures for uploading or sending, not for saving to the phone and using as a slideshow or such...
