Robot Dog from Hell Is Terminator's Best Friend, My Worst Nightmare
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 11:15 PM on June 3, 2008
Although it's not as scary as the spooky Big Dog—actually, it looks as friendly as the hilarious Fake Big Dog—I can imagine this prototype of a security robot dog developing into something capable running at 80kph behind you and tearing apart your thorax with pure steel fangs and claws. Fortunately, for now the rest of the videos show him to be friendlier than my own furry best friend.

You, sir have exceeded fair use parameters. Please cooperate with the firemen when they arrive.

That thing reminds me of the mechanical hound from Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451...
"The mechanical Hound slept but did not sleep, lived but did not live in its gently humming, gently vibrating, softly illuminated kennel back in a dark corner of the fire house. The dim light of one in the morning, the moonlight from the open sky framed through the great window, touched here and there on the brass and copper and the steel of the faintly trembling beast. Light flickered on bits of ruby glass and on sensitive capillary hairs in the nylon-brushed nostrils of the creature that quivered gently, its eight legs spidered under it on rubber padded paws.
Nights when things got dull, which was every night, the men slid down the brass poles, and set the ticking combinations of the olfactory system of the hound and let loose rats in the fire house areaway. Three seconds later the game was done, the rat caught half across the areaway, gripped in gentle paws while a four-inch hollow steel needle plunged down from the proboscis of the hound to inject massive jolts of morphine or procaine."

@olternaut: "All we need now is some actual artificial intelligence and a better dog like gallop."
I enjoyed Neal Stephenson's (Snow Crash?) version of this idea. Especially since it's from the perspective of the "dog".

Meh....its alright. Its not as impressive as the bigdog prototype but I see promise. All we need now is some actual artificial intelligence and a better dog like gallop. Oh, and some razor sharp adamantium teeth and claws. And a scanning system 100 times more powerful than a bloodhound's. Andddddd a prime directive that tells it to seek out and terminate its target at all costs!!!
Then I'll buy 10.

It walks like the rabid dog in "To Kill a Mockingbird".
That said, impressive as hell. That thing isn't doing a preprogrammed sequence of movements; it's putting steps together on its own. Isn't it?

That tribunal of Techno Yakuza sitting around judging that thing looks SO damned bored...
I can hear the newcomers in the 3rd clip complaining...
"fuckingどこでGodzillaは私達発注されるか"

If there was only a way I can share with you all my vision for a robot attack dog of death. You all remember the night monsters from that vin diesel movie "pitch black"? They would be something along those lines but they would be droids and more dog like.
Mechanical night dogs from hell. And I would program them to go hunt terrorists in the mideast or wherever. One million times more terrifying than any predator or reaper drone! :)
