Remote Finder Summons Lost Electronics By Whistle
Posted by Brian Lam at 10:29 AM on June 5, 2008
I'd never stick one of these clunky beeping remote finder devices on any remote I gave a damn about. But they are triggered by the tone of the included whistle, which gives you and your clicker a relationship not unlike Lassie and Timmy. Very cool, until you lose the whistle. US$18. Bonus: They've got a keychain version with a flashlight and voice recorder, too. [1ofakind via Crunchgear]

Is it just me or have we gone backwards?
Weren't these all the rage in the 80's on keyrings?
You didn't need a separate whistle with those ones though, just know how to whistle through your mouth.

@Evangelion: I dunno. Learn to whistle?

This looks interesting, but I'd need to get two sets. One set to attach a beeping device to my remote control, and a second set to attach another beeping device to the first set's whistle which in itself I would surely misplace and have to use the second whistle to locate it.
Hmm, thinking about it, I'd probably misplace that second whistle as well, so I'll need a third set to attach a beeping device to the second set's whistle. No, wait, that third set's whistle is likely to get lost as well, so I guess I'm gonna need four sets. Or five. Maybe six?
Ah, crap. I'll just get up to change the channel.

So, what happens if you lose the whistle?

This is what is going to fill the Sharper Image gap.
It solves somebody's problem
It's silver.
It has an LED.
It novel.
It is of questionable value.

Damn those are huge. Why isn't something like this built into remotes anyways?

What the hell, do people really lose their remotes that much? I never lose remotes, but I have lost my marbles.

Isn't it just easier to not leave the remote places where you can't find them..?
Or is that too much work?

I'd rather attach a hubcap from a '64 Dodge Dart.

I'm assuming this works with any generic whistle? Cause this would defeat the purpose if you had to keep track of an object that happened to be smaller than the remote you didn't want to lose.

These things are bunk, and go off at the most irritating times. I used to have one for my keys and pretty much anything that wasn't low-pitched activated it's screaming siren noise. Which was like Nokia's lame generic SMS dual beep, but much, muh more shrill.
Worse, it didn't seem to actually go of when you whistled for it. FAIL.

i have had this set for about half a year now. it SUCKS. it gets set off all the time when i am watching a movie, and i can whistle naturally to the tune. it becomes more of a hassle having to listen to it all the time than a gain.

device makers just need to put a button on their device that makes the remote beep. problem solved.

I second tokiwartooth's failing grade. The only thing that seemed to reliably set these things off was my infant son's wail. So that was helpful.

Am I the only one that remembers these from the late 80's early 90's? my mum had one on her car keys. Nice to see them re-surface as "bleeding edge" technology ;) I predict zany-zappers and global hypercolour t-shirts on Gizmodo within the month.

@qbrad: A pair? Like one wouldn't be enough. :D
Actually, I trained my dog to bring me the remote. All I have to say is, "get the remote" and she'll spend 30 minutes looking for it. For that, she gets a couple of those little cocktail wieners I keep in the fridge. win-win.

I had a keychain that did this same trick in 1992, only you whistled with your mouth, instead of using a loseable device. I probably could have double stick taped it to my remote then, but it's probably better that I waited 16 years for an official release. Great invention, keep up the hard work!

This isn't new at all! My mother had a keychain that beepped when you whistled at it back in the early 90s!!! And this was in Portugal!!! And, YES, she can never find here darn keys! lolol

i hate when people point out old news... so i'll delicately mention that I had one of these when i was still in Russia circa '89 only you didn't need an actual whistle, you could whistle yourself...
unfortunately i don't know how to whistle...
