Robots
R/C Tortoise Crawls, Meanders, Barely Interests Cat
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 5:00 AM on June 23, 2008
The robot tinkerers over at Crabfu have made a remote-controlled tortoise that ambles around using 4 sub-micro servos controlled by a 4 channel radio system. Each leg is tied to an independent channel and axis, which means the robot moves through some serious thumb twiddling action. Besides proving that it could move forwards and backwards and all around, Crabfu also put the mechanical hero in a half shell through the rigid "Does it annoy the cat?" test. Unfortunately, it seems like this green machine has nothing on its real life counterpart:

that tortoise has some major balls
oh and i think the ratio of general laziness:interest-ability is much greater in the first cat than the second

The user-control is too lame. Twiddling two joy sticks like in the clip is crazy. It should be a single joy stick to control L-R/F-B and a throttle for speed. Oh and a control for "Flip me back upright, I'm burning up upsidedown in the sun."

That's odd. The real turtle is more like a terminator than the robot turtle.

What the hell? I thought the turtle was going to break dance in the beginning, then i thought it was limping. Also, the way the guy used the controller reminds me of something...

That was one laid back cat. My three would either attack or run away, one or the other.

Some do-gooder company should make thousands of them and give them to some poor African kids in so that they can be distracted from the fact that they are being killed and/or dying to death.

I think he should rub some tuna fish on that plastic turtle. Maybe the cat would be more interested. Or perhaps give it a biting mouth like Mr. real turtle. Then the cat wouldn't ignore it.
