Photos: Red OLPC Limited Edition
Posted by Benny Goldman at 6:33 AM on June 21, 2008
Wilson caught this limited edition Red OLPC at the company's headquarters near MIT's campus in Cambridge today. The limited edition run of 100 is made for developers working on the dual boot Sugar Linux and Windows XP system, and has specs identical to the regular OLPC, except 2GB of RAM 2GB flash memory—the minimum required for Windows. As you can see, the colour scheme is the inverse of the all-red prototype you may have seen before. There are no plans for a public release, so the closest you'll get to seeing this may be in the gallery below.

i feel bad for the olpc. it had such good intentions that were killed by companies that just wanted to make money.
on the other hand, i got to try it, and it seriously sucks. the interface is just pure shit.

Given the fact that I have yet to see one, I sort of consider all the models to be limited edition.

I'm convinced that there's an urge among a number of Giz members to commit virtual suicide, where they knowingly type a taboo comment. I mean, how else can it be explained??

Meh. Whatever. I'm fine with my green XO. I already stuck a 2 GB SD card and (following an online guide) put a bootable Ubuntu image on it and modified a couple lines in a config file to allow for boot selection.
I mainly use the XO for stealing wifi, since its wireless range is spectacular. Other than that, it rarely gets used.

@glaeven:
heh, agreed with the OS sucking. but then again, both of us are used to windows (or maybe you are a mac guy). either way w're both predispositioned to hate sugar OS. however, they are working to make it better, and as time progresses and ideas improve...i think it'll get to something that guys like you and me could appreciate
so its a red XO created for developers and has 2 gb ssd?
quick question, if you opened your XO up, would you find a flash drive in there? because it would be pretty sweet to take the covered off of my 4 gig flash drive, and replace my one gig with the 4 gigs.
today i actually introduced a guy to the XO-1. Told him the good and the bad about it...also told him about the G1G1 program...hopefully he'll get one next time that program comes around
@Human Bomb:
i spoke above about the good and bad...yeah...dont get an XO for that. unless you have child sized hands or are totally cool with carrying an external keyboard (or typing with only 2 fingers) then you wont really be able to use the keyboard. However it does make for a pretty decent machine to surf the web on as well as a fantastic ebook reader.

Sugar Linux OS does not suck. The OLPC can run any X86 based OS, be it any type of Linux, Windows XP or OSX. Of course you just need to fit the OS on the hardware, which basically means take out all the bloatware.

@SonOfMagicFact's MBP is falling apart. *grumbles*: I live in the NYC area, but have relatives in Lexington—actually, that's where I crashed Thursday night. Sorry I didn't call ahead!
Oh, and my own opinion of the red XO is that it's cooler than the green one. The guys at OLPC weren't that jazzed about it—they love their green machine—but I really thought the red would be a nice option. Too bad it's not going into production.

I use my XO to take real-time meeting minutes. (If you have narrow enough fingertips, it's possible to touch-type on this keyboard.) I use AbiWord. By renaming one file on the XO, it's possible to use the full-fledged AbiWord word processor instead of the more limited Write program. (Insructions are in the OLPCNews.com/forum pages.) I prefer AbiWord because it saves in more file formats, including .doc, and saves to a thumb drive with no difficulty.
I save files to a USB thumb drive, then upload them to Google Docs when I have a wifi connection. So you can definitely utilize the word processing abilities of Google Docs via the XO. I do so on a regular basis.
I also use the XO to browse the web. I installed Opera on it because it allows for saving bookmarks and tabbed browsing. (I found installation instructions on the OLPC News forums.)
I also use the XO as an ebook reader. Aside from downloading .pdf file format ebooks from Project Gutenberg, I also installed FBReader (with instructions I found in the forums mentioned above). That allows me to read ebooks in the Plucker format.
I find the XO to be a very handy travel and backup laptop. If I enroll in classes for the upcoming semester, I plan to use i tas a notetaking device.
