Patent Shows Apple Researching Advanced iPhone Sensor Use, iChat Integration
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 11:53 PM on June 19, 2008
Over at Mac Rumors they've unearthed a recent patent that shows Apple is researching cleverer use of the iPhone's many sensors. More nifty than turning the screen off when you put it to your ear, the new uses may include things like working out it's in your pocket (by temperature, proximity and ambient light) and then auto-switching to vibrate mode. Intriguingly, there's a hint that by detecting you've docked the phone, it may pass an ongoing phone call to a VoIP call over iChat. This all makes sense: making best use of those sensors and the iPhone's power... but like all Apple patents, we may never see these ideas in a real-life software update. [MacRumors]

That sounds great. The iPhone 3g already has a auto illuminating sensor for the screen. So the screen brightness changes depending on what light the phone is subject to.

I wonder if the sensor will be able to tell that the side of my face is sweaty and know that it needs to up the call volume because I'm on my bicycle.

sooo... I just saw on the apple website that the iPhone/iPod touch firmware 2.0 is "sold seperately". does that mean i have to pay for the new firmware???

Anyboday else think that Jobs will get rid of the 8gb and 16gb iTouch in Q2 or Q3 this year and introduce a 64gb model to go along with the 32gb model? They will be priced $299 and $399?
It seems to me that they would lose a lot of sales due to the iPhone 8gb and 16gb.

@PollockRoc: best answer for that is the nice little switch on the side. whenever i put the thing down, i flip the switch.. and viola! watever ringtone you have asigned will go off. flip the switch again, and phone goes back to vibrate function.

@draconis1492: I'm probably the furthest thing from a patent expert, but does anyone know if there is some sort of statute of limitations to prevent people from doing that sort of thing? Do patents expire if a certain time period elapses without said product being developed?

@tehdahl: i agree. if that is your only reason, on July 11 you will be missing out on one of the most cool, and useful smart phones out right now.
and plus almost all people who use smartphones, have email function... so pic sms is not a top priority.
even thought there are great 3rd party chat programs for the phone, i hope ichat comes soon to iphone, now that 3G will be available.

@Mayor McRib: My last phone had that feature. I found it especially annoying as my phone is always on vibrate. I would miss a lot of calls/text when my phone was on charge across the room because it would be switched to silent mode. I was glad to be rid of that "feature" with my enV.

Are we ever going to see the end of companies patenting things that they can't do yet? I'd lake to patent a phone that you can communicate with telepathically. I'm never going to develop it just sue others that do.

@tehdahl: Well, the year remaining on my Verizon contract isn't helping either. I'll be re-evaluating in about 11 months or so.

@Mayor McRib: Sadly I don't believe iPhone has this feature. If it's charging and hooked up it will still just vibrate and not make a sound. The good news is the flip switch on the side that switches from ringer to silent w/ vibrate. So you don't have to go through a bunch of menus to turn the ringer back on, simply flip the switch. It's even easier then toggling the hold switch from iPods.

Didn't an Apple patent surface last year that lets you use your iPhone as a Snitch in Quidditch? C'mon Apple, when are we going to see THAT???

@PollockRoc:
Sorry for raining on your cause, but if that's your only outstanding reason for not getting an iPhone, you might as well get one.
There are various *cough* third party apps for doing the job, and doing it well.

Question for the iPhone users. Does the phone automatically know when you are charging it and change out of vibrate mode automatically (if you are in vibrate)? Strange thing is the RAZR had/has this feature and it was actually good. Especially since I keep my phone on vibrate 80% of the time to spare my coworkers from hearing my annoying ringtones.

@PollockRoc:
You CAN send and receive MMS messages on an iPhone. Just send it to the phone's email address (5555555555@vtext.com). It is free (for you) and easier to do than sending an MMS on most regular phones. Also, if you want to receive an MMS message, have them send it to your email address instead of your phone number. Here is a list of the different email extensions for various wireless carriers.
[www.modmyifone.com]
Also, if you want to get out of your Verizon contract, simply take a look at Verizon's coverage map on their web site, find a town where they don't get coverage, and then tell them you will be moving there next week. Sometimes they will ask for proof of your new address, but it worked fine for my friend last year. Other ways to get out of your contract include killing yourself, joining the military, or using your cell phone outside of Verizon's network on a regular basis. Cell phone companies put clauses in their contracts that allow them to opt out if you are constantly roaming because it costs them a lot of money.

@PollockRoc: Mine would automatically go from vibrate to ring when charging, not from vibrate to silent. It actually worked pretty good and kept the phone from vibrating off the table. I didn't like the feature at first but learned to really like it. Toggling the iPhone won't be that big of an issue either. I wonder if the developers will have access to the sensors that will allow them to make downloadable apps. that would take advantage of them?

@justinpe: The only problem with sending mms as email is that there are restrictions on size and format of attachemtns. If something you send is outside the norm the recieving carrier with either reject it or transcode it to the lowest common denomonator. The result is that an MMS tends to arrive faster and look better than an email to an mms.
@zanzibarlegend: I sure hope I'm missing some sarcasm here, either that or you sound like a real fan boy.
As far as email, count the number of people who can get mms and the people who can get email on their phones. MMS will be a much bigger number by far. It's absurd and arrogant, typical Jobs, to ignore this segment. Third party apps are not reliable as long as you have to unlock the phone, and have apple fighting back, to install them. Once the AppStore is up it may be a different story, but since all those have to get Stevies brown star stamp of approval, if he still doesn't want MMS there won't be.

isn't it obvious that they'll bring iChat to the iPhone in September? They specifically called out the problem with "programs like Chat programs" where you need something running in the background. They effectively "solved" this problem with their push service which they said they'd make available in September during the keynote.
You'd have to think they want to put iChat on the iPhone but were waiting until they could actually do it right... and this seems like that time.
Still kinda baffled about picture messaging though... Copy/Paste is less of a concern for me as there have been maybe 3 times in the year I've owned my iPhone where I could've used it. But picture messaging seems like it should be as easy to do as when they added the ability to send SMS messages to multiple people... no?

@frigg: Tethering I can understand, that's been a touchy subject for carriers before, but I'm as clueless as anyone else about the MMS thing.

@justinpe: I broke a Verizon contract w/o paying an ETF by simply asking nicely on the phone. I asked, the person checked with their supervisor, and then said OK. So, maybe it won't work for everyone, but FWIW it at least worked for me, and I didn't have to die, join the military, or roam.
@draconis1492: Do you know why there isn't regular MMS on the iPhone? Seriously, do you know what the rationale is (even if you disagree with it)? Like with tethering, I guess they're afraid of the drain on bandwidth. But why are they resisting standard MMS?

@draconis1492: My guess is that Apple actually has the technology available to do this. I'm sure that there are prototypes in use that can take advantage of hardware that is already in the iphone (possibly minus the temperature sensor). My guess is to apply for a patent, you have to have more than just an idea.

@draconis1492:
You're right about that. There are certainly limitations. Another one is having to go through and add a separate phone#/email address for everyone you want to send an MMS to in your address book. But free makes it worth it.
