Ozone Concept Car is Wheely Eco-Friendly
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 11:30 PM on June 27, 2008
Part giant Segway, part car, part Tron light-cycle, part whirling glass-walled deathtrap...think of it as you will, the Ozone is actually a pretty interesting concept vehicle designed by Ozkan Koral. Accessed by rotating doors within the wheels, the passenger cabin is actually inside the wheelbase. It's powered by fuel cells driving twin electric motors and steered by joystick. So it's pretty eco-friendly, though I'm not sure how travel over rough terrain would feel when you're inside. Plus, World War II gadget afficionados may remember the Great Panjandrum when they see this, and shudder. Just a concept. [OzkanKoral via Ecofriend]

@Curves: Actually, I think it'd be pretty easy - a two-wheeled design like that can spin around its center axis.

Gizmodo, WTF! You do know this is part of the Peugeot design competition? so there's hundreds of these designs. And this one is a bad copy of the one that won a few years ago.

@ramman345: Thats what the dynamic balancer would be for. If it runs on the same concept as the Segway, it would take this into account and provide force counter clockwise to compensate for this.

People like this design concept but think about the physics. When you hit the brakes hard on your car (or motorcycle) momentum increases the force on the front wheel. When you hit the brakes hard on this thing the cabin will just start spinning with the wheels. No stopping on a dime!

Does it really make any sense to say that a concept car is "eco-friendly"? I had a really great concept once, of an individual flying car, powered by anti-matter, and controlled directly by my brain. Is this really impressive or interesting to anyone?

And as soon as all of the world's streets, highways, drive thrus and parking lots are changed to accommodate this design, you might actually see some driving around. Meanwhile, if we just concentrated on converting the existing, and yes, working car designs into eco-friendly vehicles, there won't be a need to redesign the shape of them. Not only that, but the design of the vehicle doesn't appear to be very efficient aerodynamically, so it would consume more energy than if it were shaped like a normal car, or made even more streamlined than that. As a concept it's interesting, but as a real world design, I say fail.

@Log1c:
But Segways are much lighter than this could ever be, and only go at about 12mph. To get something this large to stop from any decent speed would need a huge amount of torque, which if even possible to fit within the size of the car (it would need a very fast and/or heavy gyroscope) would completely ruin any idea of eco-friendliness, since it requires power to stop!

BUT! Stick two of these together, one after the other, with the cabins joined in the middle and you could have a pretty roomy, pretty smooth riding motorhome, plus rollovers would be a thing of the past because aside from the huge stability factor you could just drive on the roof like one of those flat battlebots.
