Official Star Wars USB Hubs May be Best USB Products Ever
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 8:09 PM on June 26, 2008
Forget Dr Who's TARDIS, sci-fi USB hub fans (come on... you know who you are) are going to go bonkers over these official R2D2 and Vader USB hubs. R2's head moves, he lights up and emits genuine Star Wars sound effects every three minutes, while Vader just seems to have the sound effects and glowing eyes. *Shiver*... menacing. Of course they also have four full-speed USB sockets on the front, and come with three feet of USB cable. Available in July for around US$66... but that's in Japan, USB hub fans. These are very cool, but we will NOT forget the TARDIS USB Hub from Doctor Who! Why not get them all?

What's cool is the error message you get when you don't use an external power adapter.
"I find you lack of bus power disturbing."

I saw these at the Tokyo Toy Show. Were pretty good looking in person.

Does the Darth Vader model come with cafeteria tray?

"Don't try to frighten us with your sorcerer's ways, Lord Vader. Your sad devotion to that ancient connection standard has not helped you conjure up faster transmitions or given you clairvoyance enough to find the Rebel's hidden (wifi) base-station"

I dont recall R2 having those copper looking tubes on his arms/feet whatever those are. I could plug into R2 ok, but I would be afraid to hook into the Dark Side of Vader.

@Curves: Astromechs have those lines there, but they seem to be depicted as alternately copper or black depending on who's doing the interpreting/reproducing when I do a Google image search.

Why, oh why, oh why do USB hubs always only ever have 4 ports?! Yes, I've seen a couple 7-port hubs, but the vast majority - the ones I actually wouldn't mind sitting on my desk - are only 4.
With the increasing number of gadgets that communicate and/or charge by USB these days, why aren't we seeing more hubs that have more than 4 ports?

I think these look great, but won't they start to look strange once you start plugging in cables? Many USB cables are that tacky old beige or gray.
R2 will look like he's either getting a tune up or copulating with my label printer. Darth will look like he's on life support. How long before we see images with two USB humping dogs stuck in Lord Vader's chest? JPR!*

At $66. Uh. No. Screw R2D2. Doesn't even match my Mac...

The Artoo could use a little paint mod for those of us who are huge Rogue Squadron fans, and the ports do make a little more sense than the Jeff Vader one.
Honestly? How do these even begin to compare to the TARDIS?
