New Wall-E Promotion Posters Invoke 1950s Ad Stylings
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 4:30 AM on June 23, 2008
Fans of retro-styled poster art and Pixar films can now buy Eric Tan's 1950s throwback WALL-E prints. The WALL-E designs, which include pictures of Wall-E and Eve next to slogans such as "The Future is NOW!" were previously handed out as promotional postcards at the San Diego Comic Con 2007. These new poster-size versions measure 33 by 48 cms and cost US$165 unframed.
Tan says he found his inspiration from old Disneyland attraction posters - something the Pixar guys are allegedly obsessed with. To differentiate the new Wall-E prints from his last line of The Incredibles art, Tan decided to go for a 1950s advertisement twist. Get your own at Acme Direct or, if you'd rather risk jail than spend US$165, steal them from the walls of the main lobby of Pixar Animation Studios. [Slashfilm]

@Zadillo:
One other thing; the other distinguishing characteristic of the EVE Online logo is the V's sharp bottom point that stretches out below the E's. The WALL-E logo has a flattened bottom to the V which lines up with the E's. Really, visually speaking, they are two very different ways of doing "EVE".

@DashTheHand:
Beyond the fact that they're both EVE in capital letters, I don't think they're that similar. The EVE Online logo has E's that are broken up into three distinct lines, which the WALL-E poster version doesn't. The WALL-E poster version has a small triangle in the space inside the V, which the EVE Online logo does not. And finally, the EVE logo in the WALL-E poster is flatted out quite a bit.
I don't really see the "veeeery similar" similarity.

@Jones91: i agree
this movie isnt evne out yet and people are obsessing over it. 99% chance it has the same plot of every other disney/pixar movie.

I immediately thought of the Powerpuff girls for some odd reason.
PS: Is Wall-E supposed to represent the everynerd? More and more I get a flash of "mechanised version of Bill Gates", which in the context of Apple having a hand in designing Eve just makes me laugh and laugh. Then there's a whole thing of Eve, an Apple and the downfall of MS I won't even begin to touch.

@DashTheHand: I wonder too... I saw that and immediately thought it was an add for the Game.
@Zadillo: Seeing as how there is a similar overall shape, and the fact that I immediately thought of the game not the movie, I think there is reason to complain. And matter of fact, the EVE logo used to have a triangle in the middle a few years ago.

I have an unnatural obsession with shit like this. I REALLY love 1950's ads. Idk why. So I would probably shell out the money for this, but it would have to be a really good movie first. We'll see. June 27th!!

OMG!!! Ponies!!!
Posted 7:06 AM 23/6/08
@Zadillo:
It's a total rip-off. There is nothing original about the design. I mean, look at how the "E" uses three horizontal lines with a vertical line connecting them on the left side. There is nothing innovative about that "E" whatsoever. Just the same tired "E" that's been around for years.
Looks like Pixar, Jobs, Ive and the rest of Cupertino got lost on the way back to the well.
OMG!!! Ponies!!!

seriously, movies aren't even abuot CONTENT or STORY anymore...it's all the same recycled crap, but with a different cute lil character lineup, in a different setting.
i really feel like disney/pixar needs to spend more time on striving for originality instead of recycling the same shit and focusing on maximizing profits though merchandising.

@theorie:
you're just bitter.
Disney needs to spend more time on striving for originality.
Pixar was/is doing just fine on their independent (it only has the Disney logo on it for profit on Disney's behalf) projects.
Ratatouille was original.
Wall*E is original.
Toy Story was a breakthrough.
Monsters Inc. had never been done before.
Finding Nemo was breathtaking.
So, I agree with your comments, but attribute all the shit to Disney only.

Kung-fu Rodeo has had high-res versions of these on their blog for a few months - go there for bigger versions.
@ theorie, would like to know what your favorite PG movies are. What's recycled about the idea of a robot learning about humanity through their trash after they've been gone 700 years? Sounds pretty damn original to me.
Pixar's films are the best written and directed PG films made today, sans Cars... and soon-to-be Cars 2. Have been since Toy Story. Classic film, great story.

1.) You are a grammatical wonder.
2.) You wouldn't survive a day without something "tech oriented" in your life.
3.) Please stop repeating what you've been told. No one likes a parrot.
You are also forgetting a key part of our culture as well: individuality. Freedom. Which basically means most people are going to stay in your "hyper-consumerism" culture/mindset and not change... because, by golly, they're American! And they like it that way.

@Jones91: Sure they are, just like every tech gadget. How many things tech oriented are necessary? None, actually. In the modern American culture, we're more obsessed with looking successful than actually being successful. The hyperconsumerism that has dominated our culture for the past few decades has led us (economically) to where we are now - a country in financial ruin, with the average American tens of thousands of dollars of credit card debt.

@tehdahl: When someone brings up another's grammar and/or spelling, you immediately lose all credibility. Sorry, you lose.
Second, I couldn't survive a day without a tech oriented gadget in my life? While you probably depend on the microwave for all your 'meals' (no, microwaving hot pockets doesn't constitute cooking), I easily could survive many days without a tech gadget coddling me.
Stop repeating what I've been told? Unlike yourself, I am able to form my own ideas from what I read and learn. You, on the other hand, seem content to exist in a life where your self-worth is generated by what new cell phone you just got, or the new PC you just purchased.
And freedom? How exactly does being up to your eyes in debt and no chance of ever retiring make you 'free'? It seems you, like so many others, have no idea what the word 'freedom' actually means.
I don't blame you, though. You probably haven't ventured into the real world yet. When you open your eyes and see that what toys you have means nothing in the real world, you'll come around to my way of thinking.
