Microsoft Mistakes Browser War for Browser Party, Sends Firefox a Lovely Cake
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 9:45 AM on June 18, 2008
Just like they did when Firefox 2 dropped, Microsoft has sent the guys over at Mozilla a congratulatory cake. The nerd food was delivered in person and was graciously accepted by the Firefox crew, who managed to hold back snide remarks about the cake's standard compliance and proprietary recipe long enough to take a few pictures. At least Microsoft has a sense of humour about their eroding market share. [Al Billings]

Why no inline PDF viewing... and I don't like plug-ins. That's like selling someone an empty box and telling them well you can fill it with whatever you want. Yes, you can skin Firefox but the default theme is like some futuristic piece of plastic...yeh, it's cool but I would would rather walk on a wood floor that is safari then a plastic piece of re-recycled crap.

In the last couple of years, Microsoft is much better natured about competition than the Apple or Linux organizations.
The PC-Mac commercials are borderline bad sportsmanship, and sometimes are just wrong. (like the ones that infer Windows cannot be used with fun entertainment (!?) software and isn't compatible with digital cameras (!!?)
Linux pundits will basically call everything that comes out of Redmond a broken Commie POS and have insisted that the 'Linux Year Of The Desktop' has arrived every year since 1998.

The way I see it, IE's market share (when you get out of the internet echo chamber) is still pretty substantial. However it's not really MS's huge money maker and I'm willing to bet that they've basically ceded the eventuality of losing the market and have swapped out all the IE personnel with fun loving hippies who probably pronounce it "Eye-EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!" and giggle to themselves every time.
Thus, a cake being sent to the crew.

@BonoMan, @woogychuck: (Browser doesn't matter to MS, no money in it.)
You're very wrong. First Microsoft used proprietary ActiveX technology to force improvements to the Web experience to be Windows-only binary code. When that turned out to be a gaping miserable security hole Microsoft used MSIE's market share and lack of compatibility with later CSS and XHTML standards to freeze improvements to the Web experience (except for XMLHttpRequest for Outlook Web Access, a fine genuine advance).
Even now there's still no SVG support or canvas tag in MSIE, and JScript is very incompatible with standard JavaScript. Microsoft is stalling ECMAscript 4 and HTML 5 Web standards work, while Firefox/Opera/Safari browsers are busy implementing really cool new features. Microsoft's attitude these days: you want cool graphics and more advanced application scripting? Go download proprietary mostly/only-on-Windows Silverlight or CLR/DLR/.NET whatever, which don't come from the IE group.
Meanwhile if 90% of your computing takes place in the browser and Firefox runs just the same on Linux, why pay the Microsoft tax?
