MarineAV's 70-Inch, Waterproof LCD TV
Posted by Sean Fallon at 9:00 AM on June 27, 2008
The 57-inch Aquavision is a definitely a big waterproof television, but it falls well short of the 70-inch beast that MarineAV is packin'. Outside of its size and rugged exterior, the LCD70 also features full 1080p resolution, a 1,500:1 contrast ratio, 600cd/m2 brightness, 8ms response time, 178 degree viewing angle, and AV, S-Video, Component, HDMI, PC (VGA) inputs. Not bad...until you see the £27,995.95 ($58,000) price tag that is. [MarineAV via HDTV UK via Born Rich]

1,5000:1 contrast ratio? Ewwwww.... Not so good for that kinda cash. I better see at least 10,000:1 for something made to be outside!

This will avoid the very common "O MY GOD I JUST DROPPED MY 70 INCH LCD TV IN THE WATER AND NOW IT'S BROKEN" situation

In that illustration, the surfer should have the TV on his shoulder, boombox style.

@EnochLight:
You have no idea how contrast ratio works. 1500:1 is perfect. Picture Quality and black level hardly rely on contrast ratio. You also have to understand that almost all companies lie about contrast ratio. There is no market specified way to measure contrast ratio. Many TV's above 10000:1 ratio have their true ratio at around 1000:1 to 2000:1. The ratio has absolutely nothing to do with being outside either. That depends on brightness and what type of TV it is. CRT's are often prone to glare. Don't post unintellectual comment. :)

Isn't this surfer the same guy in the EOS camera banner ad here on GIZ?

They always list these TV's as "water proof"...but what about other liquids? Mineral content, acidity, etc. can all wreak havoc on electronics. Will this TV stand up to the occasional spray of used motor oil? Chocolate syrup? What about a VERY heavy stream of urine?

@albo23:
"Don't post unintellectual comment"?
Riiiight...
Don't throw insults to absolute strangers behind your screen name, ass. I know exactly how contrast ratio "works" and 1000:1 is crap for a display with a $50K price tag.
Drop your smugness. *rolls eyes*

This ties in nicely to the homoerotic super soaker video from a few days ago.
Seriously though, $55K for essentially an LCD with water-proof seals? Give me a break.
