Lightpipes Give Any Room That Cool, Radioactive Industrial Plant Look
Posted by Sean Fallon at 9:00 AM on June 20, 2008
Looking for a new design element to tie a room together? Ever thought about spicing things up with a theme? These Lightpipes will give any space that swanky post- meltdown Chernobyl look that is so popular with all of the interior designers these days. And the best part is that no installation is required--just set it up wherever you need some spooky illumination. Just don't expect to get them for bargain price--each lamp will set you back around US$612. [DaWanda via Technabob via OhGizmo]

You could easily create this look using a big sheet of acrylic and maybe $20 worth of parts from home depot.

Nothing is sadder than someone with money, a cool apartment with exposed brick, and no taste.

This is one of those things that should be called "punishment for not having plastic fabricating equipment." It's so freaking cool, and it's a simple idea that is probably cheap to make...if you have the hugely expensive up-front equipment costs taken care of.
Sigh. $612 is about $600 too much.

I like "industrial" decor. I like tongue-in-cheek design. This just misses for me on both counts, not quite fun enough and not quite interesting enough. And, besides, they have to be cheating with these photos--just where is the clunky electrical cord that surely is needed to power these pipes? Once a cord is showing, whatever slight coolness these "ducts" might have had vanishes.

@bosskev: I kid you not, that picture depicts my day, except I am in a business suit- which is now covered in particle board dust, insulation fibers, and something that looks remarkably like rat fleeces. I'll be humming "Brazil" all night.
I like it. I'd love to have it at the end of a hallway, or the lab, or ... the server room.

These will be perfect for my "Quake 2" motif.
These and earth tones.

freakin sweet
way too expensive, but maybe now ill do this for my apt. although it probably wouldnt look as cool attached to my peeling white paint walls and carpet. yeah scratch that.
however, one could solve the "plug showing problem by simply attaching one end of the pipe to the portion of the wall where the outlet is, concealing it.

Now all the glowing pipe needs is a fat kid being sucked up it.
As a kid, that scene from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory messed me up good.

@bosskev, i ran the page through the Google translator, and one pertinent line said this, FWIW....... "This system is free plug or expandable and is based on the design of a ventilation pipe. Ideal as a ceiling lighting system, the bar or simply as a decorative element." ********************************************************************************************************* I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.- - Henry David Thoreau The Things That Will Destroy Us Are: Politics Without Principle; Pleasure Without Conscience; Wealth Without Work; Knowledge Without Character; Business Without Morality; Science Without Humanity; And Worship Without Sacrifice. - - Mahatma Gandhi Always remember that you are absolutely unique. What you're imagining is black body radiation, the red/orange glow of a hot metal. The glow produced by radioative materials (radium, tritium) is the result of fluorescence/phosphorescence of materials excited by ionizing radiation.
