Lightning Review: Razer DeathAdder Gaming Mouse for PC and Mac
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 6:20 AM on June 6, 2008
The Gadget: Razer's DeathAdder, an 1800dpi right-handed gaming mouse for PC or Mac.
The Price: US$59.99
The Verdict: You'll remember in my gaming gear Battlemodo that I slighted Razer's Lachesis mouse for its ergonomics and build quality. Thinking I might get along with a right-handed mouse better, Razer sent me the DeathAdder, which just dropped for Macs ('cause Mac gaming is so robust.)
And I did, greatly preferring it to the ambi Lachesis. It's comfortable, and if you like the ergonomics of Microsoft mice, you'll probably dig DeathAdder, which has a similar form factor. The most clever thing about the design is that the two buttons are clickable deep into the mouse's body, so you can grip it shallow or really palm it--also useful if you have tiny hands. Tracking's accurate enough, though I'd have liked more than three settings for DPI.
I would've also liked a thicker, braided cord, like on Logitech's G5 or SteelSeries' Ikari, but overall the build quality seems good enough. Is it worth US$60? As much as any other gaming mouse is worth the extra bones. [Razer]

I love my Logitech G7. My desktop setup more or less mandates a cordless mouse and the hot-swapable batteries are nice. I got it cheap though, $40 a year ago, and I still think that was a lot to spend on a mouse.

I don't understand these gaming mice. They don't have enough buttons. I want at least 8 buttons on my mouse for gaming.

I actually got my Deathadder on clearance at Circuit City for like 24 bucks.

Sigh, when will a decent trackball ever be made again? My Trackball explorer is starting to show its age and nothing else on the market comes close.

@LordRoY: I've heard that something like 3000 or so left-handed people die a year from using right-handed products.

Still loving my G5, but I'm as likely to use my MX Revolution for gaming nowadays. It does quite well.
As for this, it LOOKS pretty cool, and if I wasn't cut off from YouTube at work I'd CERTAINLY be making a Black Adder reference at this time as well.

If it is not ambi- I dont want it. I am a lefty that needs my mouse in my left hand. I get so sick of "right-handed-only" world.

@LordRoY: Also a lefty, I highly recommend Razor's Copperhead. 4 extra buttons and ambi for us more creative types...

I could see something with a 2nd scroll wheel for your thumb perhaps....Or something that can interpret a pivot of the mouse left and right....

@Y2KGTP: it works with Macs, so 'extra buttons' would mean 2.

@LordRoY: I have 2 computers at work. One for Dev work, and one I probably should never do anything with, other than admin stuff (is monitored :( ) I'm naturally right handed, but broke my right when I was like 15, so had to learn to use my left for about a year. So, at work I have my Dev PC on the left, and my Big Brother PC on my right. Both are right handed mice, but I use the Dev one with my left, and ole' Snitchy with my right. Works out great cause I can use both PCs at the same time. Is also funny to watch when IT comes to fix something... "Where's your mouse? Your left handed?" ...Than watch them squirm as they try to navigate ;-).

unless it has extra buttons, I really don't get 'gaming mice'

I've got one of these, too, and it's the best mice I've ever had. It fits my hand so well and... yeah. :) Love it.

Logitech mice are still so much better: they had two thumb buttons for a long time already. I have yet to see a Razor mouse that compares with my Logitech G5.

my g5 is good enough. Razer mouse don't look good, arent very well built, and just plain suck. I got my g5 for $40 thats 20 less then that shitty razer. You could use that 20 u saved to buy a gaming mouse pad, (which i did)

Hey, the one you have pictured here has blue lights, but on Razer's site, as well as on Amazon, they're calling it "Lunar White." What's the deal, matt buchanan? Is this actually the Mac Edition, or just a regular ol' DeathAdder? And what's the difference anyway, other than the color? Just the drivers, no? Can I buy a blue one and special request (torrent) some mac drivers? I'm super curious because I've been holding off on buying this very mouse for months for no good reason (and I use a mac so this is good news).

@Everybody must be sleeping or something: Whatever! I bought it anyways. Happy I waited. I'm totally stoked! Thanks for the review.
Hopefully Razer's next keyboard for mac will actually feature a command key! Eh?? All Apple and no Razer makes SuperCollider a sad boy.

ugh make them wireless. I hate wired mice.

i did some hw before buying a deathadder.
razer just released the deathadder for mac but hardware-wise it is no different from the pc version. it just comes packaged with mac drivers. and has a white lighting instead of blue.
before razer released the mac version, the mac drivers were downloadable from their site but obviously they took it off the site.

@mikecoscia: hmm wouldn't be gaming mouse if it was wireless.
One more thing, a gaming mouse is not labeled that because it has more keys. These are labeled gaming mice because of their resolution & response time.

Mac?
Why do you need a gaming mouse for that?

Used to have a Habu, and the left click went all screwy (would double click more than half the time, apparently a common problem). It'll take a lot to get me back in the Razer game, though I absolutely adored that mouse for the 8 months it worked. Everything was perfect about it and it had all the features I could need. I've got a G5 now, and it's great too, but I still miss my Habu.

I just plugged in and set up my new Mac edition DeathAdder!
@cheezymac: You're right, its exactly the same mouse, except for the white light, which pulsates. I guess they must have put their drivers back up on their site though, because the ones that come bundled are actually just links to their website, and you DL 'em from there. Kind of completely ridiculous.
