Lego-Built Wall-E: It Was Only a Matter of Time
Posted by Sean Fallon at 5:10 AM on June 18, 2008
It was only a matter of time before someone decided to tackle a Lego version of Disney-Pixar's cute little cash cow Wall-E. After a three month planning session, Joe Meno, editor of BrickJournal magazine, managed to get the job done. The result is a very impressive model that features a moving neck and arms along with rolling treads. Hit the Flickr gallery for the full set of photos. [Flickr via Brothers Brick]

@LindsayJoy's MBP is into S+M: Just wear something with a low neck line. The maintenance dude's won't notice a single lego.

@Dook_In_The_Urinal: Who says she wears underwear? There's nothing like an unfurnished basement for pure comfort.

I was wondering how long it would take before you rang in on this one. :)
As far as the sweaty maintenance guys, Be careful! And make sure you padlock your underwear drawer.....

Except these guys are big and sweaty and scary, well I kinda like it but, Wall-E is so cute!

@Git Em SteveDave can't think of a clever way to mention Lin...: Look at the eyes and they'll give you an idea of the scale. I'm guessing somewhere around 10" or so.

Seriously, I must give credit for the photography also. It almost looks like his eyes are "sad" in the photos. Do we have any idea of scale?

Nicely done! Too often these models are done at such a large scale that they are nothing more than 3D pixelations of their subject. The artist here took wonderful advantage of the parts.

The writeup isn't accurate. If you click the link it says that the arms don't move, but are poseable. The neck and treads do move.

@Git Em SteveDave can't think of a clever way to mention Lin...: You say that now, but if a disgruntled ex-clown sidekick threatens your town with a nuclear weapon, you may have done better to have it.
As for Lego WALL-E, DO MOTHER-LOVIN' WANT! That is all.

you know how there was an "apple free" giz url?
how do we get a "wall-e free" giz url?
i'm sick of seeing posts about this stupid movie & it's merchandise, even though the movie hasn't come out yet.
it looks like every other disney/pixar movie, and they couldn't even come up with an original character (ahem...number 5?)

@hakubak:
I'd put it closer to 8". The pupils of the eyes are 3x3 radar dishes, backed by the new 4x4 round plates. A 2x4 brick is 1-1/4" long, and doing a very rough measurement it looks like the overall height would be 6-7 brick-lengths.
If you're in the Chicago area, I wouldn't be surprised if this is displayed at Brickworld this weekend. One of the perqs of Joe's new "job" is that he gets to fly around to all the major LEGO events, and this looks like it's small enough to travel with.

man when I was a young-en I had to build stuff like this with my imagination from a regular lego set. Nowadays kids just have it easy and cant put any imagination to use! making society a little bit slower, 1 lego brick at a time! lol!

Hi,
it's the builder of this model. Indeed, this is heading to Chicago, but it's being shipped - I really don't like the idea of TSA trying to figure if its a harmful device.
I get to travel, but I also have to write and take pics it's fun but intense sometimes.
Instructions of some type are coming - the BrickJournal publisher saw it and wants an article about it, but it will be 6 months from now...I will probably rebuild it and make instructions before then. There are some places that could use another build cycle.
Concerning the Wall-E/Johnny 5 debate, the only similarity are the eyes (and maybe the hands). Saying there is some kind of design infringement there is a lot like saying a Volkswagen is a ripoff from a Lotus Esprit because it has wheels that are black and round. Wall-E also doesn't have the Syd Mead design sense either.
Otherwise, thanks for the compliments!
PS I can relate to LindsayJoy - maintenance has given me a bit of a reputation at the complex where I live because of the stuff I have.
