Lego Death Star Video Requires Lots of Mental Pew-Pew
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 10:30 PM on June 21, 2008
Our friend Nannan Zhang from Brothers Brick is now in Chicago attending Brickworld, the annual convention for all things Lego. He was able to snap this cool video on the new US$400 Death Star diorama, showing how things move, including the working trash compactor. I still think they should make one to the scale of the Millennium Falcon, but I guess that could probably alter Earth's orbit. As an alternative, they should release a Lego stormtrooper mini-cloning facility. [Brothers Brick]

I find the voices of pre-pubescent and pubescent geeks to be grating and it fills me with an urge to shake them like a British Nanny. Is that wrong?
The one guy who complained about the moving super laser dish reminds me of Purple Dave for some reason.

'Little bit at a time Jesus, feed us the Lego stories slowly.
It's gotta end eventually, but I'd like to postpone that if possible. ;)
I can't argue with the kid in the background wanting three of 'em, but I'd settle for two.
One to display, and one of course for the parts, except for the ships and the minifigs. Those would be kept whole.

Another Lego vid? I'm sensing a pattern here Jesus.
How many pieces did you knock off this one?

I quit the video about halfway through because of that annoying kid. I actually screamed "Shut the FUCK UP!" at my monitor before stopping the vid.
The set is cool, but I'm not sure if it's $400 cool.

This LEGO kit is crap :-/
Seriously, a diorama set in the form of a naked deathstar? Atleast add in some plating that you could put on to make it atleast look like a deathstar. This thing is fugly in its current state.

Well, I watched the video hoping to catch whatever spark of enthusiasm everyone else around here has for LEGO products, and I got nothing. Whatever gene all of you possess that was supposed to disappear when you reached maturity, I can only assume I never had.
That said, my son would absolutely love this.

Good God can't wait to play with this thing! I hope it doesn't get ruined if I drool on it too much!

I am going to resist the urge to tell you that you are an idiot, but Jesus's story published a day or so ago almost all day was on the top of the list of Diggs *main* front page and its now up to over 3,800, Diggs.

Jesus . . . . . that kid is annoying!! Who is he talking to anyways? I can hear them laughing at the kid and murmuring about him. If they would have made it half covered to show the exterior lasers and half open to show the inside goodness then it would look better.

@permissionmag: I did not say he could not have fun. Just not talk and say how he's going to the store and get 5 of them "people sets", how the real dish DOES elevate, and then how he's going to get sixty-hundred of them. It's mostly the pitch of his voice that grates me. Now if Lindsay had been saying the same thing in her(and I am guessing here) throaty, 3am in a smokey bar voice, then I could stand it, and probably want more.
@LindsayJoy's MBP is into S+M: They're LEGO's, they are impervious to drool. If they weren't, how many sets and pieces would have been ruined when people took them apart with their teeth? I can still remember fondly the stinging pain the corner of the bricks caused when they slipped from my teeth and hit my gums. Wow, in thinking about it, I had an S&M relationship with my LEGO's. Maybe you could do a time lapse of you assembling it?

Brickworld (which sorta replaced the short-lived Chicago House of Bricks) is _an_ annual convention. Way back when there was Brickfest in the D.C. area, but it's gone into indefinite hiatus (someone else is starting up Brickfair to replace it). There was Brickswest at LEGOLAND, CA, but the guy who ran that disappeared with all the gate proceeds after the last one of those (and is in mortal danger of being beaten to death with a sack of Megabloks if he ever shows his face at another brick event). The current longest-running US-based event is BrickCon (formerly NWBrickCon) held in the Pacific Northwest. There's also a really small 1-day event held in Ann Arbor, MI called Brick Bash. There's also some interest in getting small annual events going in Texas and Florida, but I don't know what's happening with those.
Outside of the US there's 1000steine-Land in Germany, LEGO World in The Netherlands, and some sort of ad-hoc event held in Australia (but as far as I can tell they can't seem to settle on a single name for it, nor do they appear to hold it every year). I know there is also at least one event held in Asia (I believe in Japan), but very few Asian AFOLs interact with the western AFOL community, so I have no idea what it's called, or where/when it takes place.
@Git Em SteveDave has a crush on the Swedes:
Smokey bar voice? I'd hope not. Tobacco tar stains LEGO bricks yellow and makes them smell nasty. There are people who won't place orders on Bricklink unless they see a disclaimer that they come from a non-smoking household. And they may be impervious to drool, but not teeth. Just ask anyone who owns a large dog.

@Git Em SteveDave has a crush on the Swedes: Uh. You know you guys have basically turned Gizmodo comment threads into Something Awful, right? Where a girl starts to talk, and instantly all talk becomes about that girl? It was cute about 18 threads ago, now it's getting a little icky.

@Purple Dave: I was describing a voice, not an actual situation. It also doesn't imply someone smokes. In fact, it is the exact opposite. It is the lowness/semi-harsh quality a voice can take on after being exposed to something it is not acclimated to, i.e. smoke. Depending on the person, it can add a sultry "growl" and timber to their voice which some men find "hawt", much like many men, some women, and a few figs, feel about LindsayJoy.

High-res photos are indeed great, but nothing beats a video for showing movement (and, uh, the excitement of the crowd).
A minor correction: Andrew Becraft (that's me!) is sitting here in Seattle pining for BrickCon in October. :-( Our BrickWorld coverage is by intrepid Brothers Brick contributor Nannan Zhang.
