LaCie Little Big Disk Quadra: 1TB in Your Hand
Posted by Mark Wilson at 12:29 AM on June 18, 2008
LaCie's Little Big Disk Quadra has been around for some time, but it's just gotten a major capacity boost. Now the external eSATA/Firewire 800 drive supports up to 1 terabyte of storage by utilising two 2.5-inch 500GB drives in a RAID 0 configuration. It's not quite iPod-sleek storage, but the Little Big Disk can fit in your hand (pending you can lift 600 grams). The new Little Big Disk Quadra runs US$659.99. [LaCie via Fareastgizmos]

Aren't these HD's only 5400RPM?

@desostros:@jhcovert: I haven't had any problems with my LaCie's, but I know where your coming from... once your burned once, it's very hard to trust a brand again, especially a HD manufacturer..
@ripfire: Yeah that pisses me off too.

It's just so useless until Microsoft develop a universal file system better than FAT32. I just don't feel like formating it to HFS.

I've had bad luck with LaCie drives - they're beautiful, but seem to crap out right after the expiration of their warranty.

That's cool... but when we're talking this much storage, I'd rather have a RAID 1 config. I realize you're halving your storage, but I'd rather not risk 1 TB of data to the whims of a single drive mechanism.

My only argument against these is that for some stupid reason people insist on calling them LAYsee drives instead of lahSEE drives the way G-d and LaCie intended.
And if your wrists are strong enough to support a terabyte of storage, have the tera wrists already won?

This makes me sad... Damn you Future shop and your tantalizing deals on the 500gb, F.A Porsche drive...

It's easy to pronounce, Youze Mugs! Just do your Edward G. Robinson impression. It's called the La, See?

Never been quite happy with my LaCie drive either.
And it's lah see. LaCie means La Compagnie means The Company

the zero in RAID 0 stands for how many files you will get back if there is a drive failure.

@Slartibartfast: Hahahah
@ps61318: Wait. So it is pronounced LaaaaaSeee like the dog? (that is elongated of course) I have only heard it pronounced LAAASee (again, elongated). And how do you know that is how they wanted it pronounced?

@scarbrtj:
Hah, exactly the same case with my drives !
After a while they'd start making noises, even shaking on their own.
...is Lay-see a decepticon of sorts?
*gasp*

@johnnyabnormal: how long have you had those deathstars? the 40-80gb batch from a couple (I guess more than a couple now... 2002ish) years that i bought, ALL the drives died within 4 months of purchase. I have not bought a hitachi drive since.

@scarbrtj: What kind of drives are in yours? My 2TB has Hitachi Deskstars (1TB each) and seems to be working fine.

Now look. I never dissed a single thing 'round these parts and have tried to steer clear of hyperbole and sensationalism.
BUT LACIE SUCKS. IT SUCKS SOOO BAD.
Let me tell you my track record. Five big disk 2 TB extreme external drives purchased in last year or so. ALL of them have developed a "squealing" power brick issue. The thing hums like a buzzer after a while. Three of the drives have completely crapped out. I have six 2 TB network LaCie drives, purchased in last 2 years. Two of those bit the dust, just recently.
Uhhh. Way 2 go, LaCie. To their credit... they have replaced stuff. But I need reliability, not constant under-warranty returns. They have to be using the cheapest of the cheap components, that's my theory at least. (But LaCie products don't sell for the cheapest that's for sure.)

@r0ckface: Don't feel sad at all. I'll could sell you a Lacie 250 GB Porsche drive cheap. In fact, four of them. All of them had bad sectors within a week of firing them up. Pretty paperweights.

@johnnyabnormal: I don't know the manufacturer of the drives used within the LaCie's, but I would imagine it's not Deskstars. The Deskstars are really good, 1.2x10E6 MTBF specs; I use 'em (now!). I kid you not... LaCie drives can't be much higher than 1x10E4 MTBF.

@funkymatt: I have two 1TB ones in my G5 since October '07 and two 1TB in a LaCie drive since January '08. No problems with any of them so far...and they are getting quite the audio/video workout every day. I would hope Disk Warrior could catch something before they ever crap out. I've heard so much bad stuff about people losing data, but I've always backed up everything every night & have never had a drive fail. (knocks on wood)

Wow, over $600 for a raid 0 piece of junk from a junk manufacturer. You would have to be STUPID. There are drives from reputable companies in the 1TB range WITH Ethernet for less than 1/2 the price.

Yeah, I don't understand this at all... why not buy a 3.5" 7200rpm 1TB drive for $150, drop it in a $20-50 external case (depending on desired connection), and be done with it? $660 is ridiculous...
