Knight Rider GPS With KITT's Voice!
Posted by Sean Fallon at 6:55 AM on June 21, 2008
I already have a GPS unit but I'll be dammed if I'm not throwing it out because the guys at Mio have come up with a Knight Rider branded GPS unit with voice prompts by the one and only Mr Feeny KITT William Daniels. Apparently, you will recognise his familiar voice as soon as you fire it up and hear "Hello Michael, where do you want to go today?" As an added touch, the display is flanked by a series of red LEDs that mimic KITTs hood-mounted lights. Further details are scarce, but we do know the Mio Knight Rider GPS will retail for US$299 when it is finally released. [Next Autos Thanks Dan!]

I just called the Mio Support line regarding if Australian Maps can be loaded into the Knight Rider GPS as was told a flat no? They said that only the ones that ship with it (USA & Canada) will work. Very disappointed :-(

Epic fail! There's no McDonalds there! It's up by Stevenson and 880. Worse yet, it's not showing the Wendys that should be right at the bottom of the screen on Auto Mall Pkwy.

Is there anyone under 30 that even knows what Knight Rider is? Probably a stupid question since I think most millennials know just about every television show ever created.

I've never really wanted a navigation system for my car... until now. If it gets good reviews and the features are comparable to other navigation systems at that price point, I may have to buy one :c)

Well, if one can't have a navigation system voiced by the dulcet tones of some elegant lass from the British Empire, then KITT will have to do. In other words, I'm sold.

KITT WAS NOT A FIREBIRD!!!!!
KITT was a 1982/1983 Pontiac Trans Am.
Sorry, I'm calmer now.....that's just my murder switch is all. You understand.

Ahem, 25 years old and have watched every Knight Rider episode at least three times and the "movies" and the failed pilot of the relaunch.
My first bike was named KITT.
My first reaction when I saw this article was OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG....
I already have a navigation system, but it is now my "backup" navigation system.
When someone sells an after-market turbo boost or super pursuit mode bolt-on for my Jetta, I'll be buying that too.

@ Stacky Botrus
That would be hard considering that Knight Rider first aired in '82. Later seasons used an '84 Trans Am, but the original KITT was an '82 Trans Am.
Now pardon me while I go and hang myself in shame for the Knight Rider geek that I am...

@TendoMentis: Yeah, but why am I going to pay more for a "Trans Am" when I have to put a Corvette hood and front clip on it anyway?
By the way, was it just me being critical or do you think they could have done a little more to customize the wheels since you could still read "Corvette" on them
Of course, I'm complaining about the wheels when half the time you could tell they were using a car that already had severe front-end damage for the jump scenes. Maybe I am too critical.

Maybe I'm OCD, but I wish it had a single line of red LEDs horizontal across the top, not two vertical lines on the sides. I'm willing to forgive this if there's an on-screen graphic EQ that mimics KITT's interior "mouth" when it talks.

But does it come with KARR voice and personality? Car telling drivers what to do is more suitable role for KITT's evil twin.

If you have a Pioneer AVIC-series unit in your car,go to www.avic411.com and do a search on KITT...some cool screens from the old show (with the vertical LED voice scanner and buttons) as well as the new show (with the 3-D body scans and gauges, etc)that can be put on your monitor as a display. I loaded a few on my screen just for kicks, and every time someone gets in the car,the first thing they ask is "does it talk like KITT too?"
This one is nice too,if a bit late to the party.

If it has the "woosh woosh" sound KITT makes (when the l=red lights across the hood move) and KITT's "mouth" animation (synchronized to the voice prompts, natch) then we have a deal.

This is all well and good, but when they sell one that has a single glowing red eye in the middle, and issues about opening the car doors you'll know we've stepped over a line.
