If This is What Prison in Brazil is Like, Arrest Me Now
Posted by Sean Fallon at 10:40 AM on June 6, 2008
Genilson Lins da Silva was arrested an thrown in prison after being sentenced to 28 years for robbery and murder. However, it appears that some of the prisons in Brazil aren't as bad as they are made out to be considering the fact that a plasma TV, refrigerator, gym equipment, two .38-calibre pistols and $173,000 in cash was recently discovered in da Silva's cell. The items were uncovered during a raid that was part of a statewide crackdown on drug trafficking, and they are now investigating how he managed to live the high life while being incarcerated. Uh...bribes maybe?[Star Telegram]

"Discovered?" Like no one knew they were there? How can they even say things like that with a straight face? It reminds me of Thailand, where every now and again you hear about a suicide jumper who had his hands bound behing him, and a bag over his head. Yeah, they call it suicide.

@weak_pig:
If there are no stupid questions, then what kind of questions do stupid people ask? Do they get smart just in time to ask questions?
OTA. these TV's that you speak of come with tuners now. And some prisons give you CC TV channels.

even if he got a plasma, theres no way in hell there'll be an available cable connection to hook up to... so how the heck does he watch tv?

@92BuickLeSabre: your probably right
With that much corruption in the jails, they might as well just have let him go. and say he escaped.

They forgot to mention pizza delivery and escort services. Yes, this also happens there. Not long ago I also read that a prisoner organized a barbecue for high level guards and chiefs. He taped the own party and it ended up on the web.

@Hawkskater: I'd guess once he got the cash and the guns, the rest was pretty straightforward.

I heard some of the jails in Brazil are actually just enclosed towns of prisoners that have houses, economies, jobs etc. Maybe he lived there.

corruption here in Brazil is everywhere...
they found 150 driver's licenses registered with the same fingerprint.
some politician "won" more than 200 times in the lottery (chances of hit 6 numbers in 60 is 1:50.000.000)
in my house there is no plasma tv. i only got a 29" crt tv this year. and some bastard in the jail are living with the money of the taxes I paid to the government when bought my 29". he don't have to work, don't have to pay anything but the bribes... and get a pair of .38s, R$ 280k, plasma, etc etc...

@Bokusatsu_Tenshi:
By law, inmates have the right to spend holidays with their family. Lots of escapees and inmates committing more crimes on holidays, as you can imagine.
some of them arrested few blocks of the penitentiary in action...

And this is old news here in Brazil.
I mean, it happened before.
The first time stuff like these was found out, happened in northern states were corruption is at it's worse.
Inmates could pay for deluxe cells, with all sorts of electronics:
[www.pernambuco.com]
Also, there's been a case where a cell had actually been reformed and enlarged all at the expense of some prisoner.
And finally, there's been reports of some prisons where some inmates could actually pay to leave the prison for the day and return at night.
Brazilian prisons are in shambles. The government does little to solve the problem, people working there are underpaid and several times threatened by inmates, and the most bizarre stuff will happen.
By law, inmates have the right to spend holidays with their family. Lots of escapees and inmates committing more crimes on holidays, as you can imagine.
It's a shame really. But the government doesn't have the moral to fix this stuff... they are too occupied with their own corruption schemes.

@CaptCaveman: My experience with prison is limited to a night spent in the drunk tank after a kegger...but I'm pretty sure you don't have to look too far for some action in prison. Usually it finds you when you're taking a shower.

Reminds me of Pablo Escobar's "prison" in Columbia when he turned himself into the government. And by prison, I mean $5 million dollar mansion that had a fence around it.

Have you ever seen the show Prison Break? Specifically season 3?
Ok, Sona was created inspired by Carandiru Pentientiary, which is a Brazilian Penitentiary.

how many inches did the TV have and how exactly did that escape detection? Well, let alone the fridge and the gym equipment.

As a brazilian i think this is a normal situation in brazilian prisions. If you are rich, you can easily bypass almost all laws. Inside prisions too. If you have academic degree, you get privileges as exclusive cell with much features. Corrupt judges, polices and polictians NEVER gone arrested!! sorry my english!!

Obviously, the TV never escaped detection in the first place and the prison staff was clearly on the take the whole time. The "discovery" was probably made by law enforcement not affiliated with the prison itself.
I remember touring Alcatraz back in the early 90's. The tour guide said that Al Capone was transferred there after it was discovered that the cell in his previous prison had been expanded to encompass two cells and that the whole thing had been carpeted for him.
If the criminal is rich and powerful enough, and if the warden and staff are corrupt, escaping detection is not a consideration.
