Beast With a Billion Backs, New Futurama DVD, Out Today
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 10:00 PM on June 24, 2008
Today is June 24 and, for Futurama fans, that can only mean one thing: the latest offering from Matt Groening and Co. is out today. Beast With A Billion Backs is a "depraved, yet sensuous" episode that, according to head writer and producer David X. Cohen, refers to as "disturbing." (Yay!) "There is certainly more of an adult theme in this film than the average Futurama episode" he adds. With David Cross voicing the Beast (everyone's favourite gymnophobic, Dr Tobias Fünke), Beast With a Billion Backs welcomes back a whole bunch of familiar faces—and voices, which include Professor Stephen Hawking. Trailer is below.
You can get Beast With a Billion Backs here, and expect to see the third DVD, Bender's Game, out towards the end of the year, as it is currently in post-production. [YouTube and Wired]

They should put them back on a network so their comedy is in small increments rather than a hour because after awhile the comedic dialogue is stale, I still love it though.

This one isn't nearly as good as Bender's Big Score. By all means, it's still Futurama, so it's still awesome. Just not quite as funny.

Love me some futurama. The two movies so far have been entertaining, but without all the classic lines and character traits of the original four season.
Either way, any futurama fan should pick this up, if only to support the show further.

It was an alright way to spend an evening in, but like others have said, it had nothing on the tv series.

@robotleawesome: Also, the problem with doing these movies is that you have a concept, and you have to carry it through for the length of the movie - with a series, you can fuck around with your 21 minutes and move on to the next idea.

Man, I don't know what a few of these people have stuck up their asses - but this was pretty entertaining. It certainly can't compete with some of the best episodes, but it's quite entertaining nonetheless.
Either way, if it took them 20 mediocre Futurama movies before making one amazing one, it'd be well worth it.

The problem is that these movies are designed to be deconstructed into four TV episodes, which for starters makes them feel as if they're running forever. I would have preferred each consist of three episodes, or do "double feature" discs of two double episodes, as both movies so far feel about 22 minutes too long (or my attention span is 22 minutes too short). It also drags things out a bit because of transitional bits that are written to come before and after commercials and at the end and beginning of each episode once they're sliced and diced for television. That said I still enjoyed the movie, especially the "Steamboat Mickey" bit in the intro; and kudos for showing the fans who voices which characters in the credits.

Wait...you mean not everyone managed to find a store that was (accidentally) selling these one full week early? Huh. Guess it's just me...
@robotleawesome:
It gets deeper than that. The fact that they're carrying a major plot thread through four episodes makes it obvious that the episodes aren't stand-alone pieces (from a show that has _no_ multi-part episodes), but the fact that they have to be sufficiently self-contained that they'll work as individual episodes kills the whole movie-feel of the combined movie. It's like they have an overly-drawn-out 1.5hr A plotline with four overly-neglected 22.5-minute B plotlines. But if this is what we have to sit through in order for real seasons to eventually get picked up, then so be it.
