Homemade Light Box and Desk Combo Moves Us (and Itself)
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 10:35 PM on June 9, 2008
Here's how to make a rather fab light box 'n' desk combo. Matt Nuzzaco even fitted the table with a Deskline from Linak, which lets him adjust the height depending on whether he's sitting or standing at his desk. Useful for anyone who works with traditional film and transparencies. Or anyone with a serious Disco Queen bent. [MAKE]

@Step666: The only guys I know that still shoot film are commercial photographers or high-end wedding photographers, and they only shoot in medium format.

@GeekyNerdGuy: some film is better, namely professional-grade film.
But for your bog-standard rolls of Kodak or Fuji, digital has surpassed them now.

Film is better, but it costs too much, takes too long to develop, is too much of a hassle to store, and doesn't let you preview to make sure you got the shot.
So in other words, only artsy novelty folks use film anymore.

Cool and all, but useful for about the 0.0000001 percent of professional photographers that still use film. Seriously, film IS better than digital for some things, BUT you have to be a trained professional to actually see the difference, except for maybe underwater shooting up at the sun.

So, this guy got his hands on a lightbox and bolted it to some motorized legs he already had hanging around. Wow! Revolutionary! A five year old with a power drill could've done that.
Okay, maybe a 10 year old. Still.

I'm not sure that he even bolted the legs on, it might be just sitting on that piece of wood that's attached to the legs. We had two of these in college, 9+ years ago, for tracing our drawings. Not motorized but they were height adjustable.

@rcast1986: I'm usually in the front lines talking crap about a dumb project or a gadget, but, even I think this is pretty cool...
I hate it when people follow standards; just because there's a lot of people using digital photography doesn't mean that these sort of tools are not needed any more. I have used light boxes to make presentations, and yes, I use film, WHY? because I can, and I like it...
This is a great project.

Pretty cool for those who would use it, even if they only use it once in a while and have this for kicks. When I read the headline, I was thinking of a different type of light box, one for making printed circuit boards. Different people, different hobbies.

Wow, nice. I mean, useless to me personally, but still very nice.

I was hoping it was going to be more than just a light box, but no, it's just a light box with adjustable feet.
So this is news? I had a better looking light box when I was in high school.

@Step666: Is pro-grade 35mm C-41 film really that much better? I'm sure there are some B&W films that pros swear by, and I'm sure there are some good color qualities when photo film has been handled correctly, but I always just thought it came off the same assembly line and was more expensive because of higher quality control standards?

@GeekyNerdGuy: once you get up to medium format, there's no question film is still king.
Even if the digital medium format bodies are starting to match them quality-wise, there's issues like cost, how long you have to wait before being able to take the next shot, having enough room to store the picture etc.
@Fierock: I've never shot with film much to be honest. My first (and so far only) SLR was a 20D.
From what I've seen there are some areas were film is still the daddy - monochrome film beats digital any day of the week and film is so much better at faster speeds as well; film with a high ISO rating and a nice grain to it is so much nicer than noisy digital images.
But even film like Fuji Velvia can rival any D-SLR when used by someone who knows what they're doing.
There's just something about film that digital will never quite match.

Actually, I can use a Light Box and desk combo like that myself for drawing...
