Google Media Server Helps Bridge Gap Between PC and TV
Posted by Adrian Covert at 9:24 AM on June 28, 2008
Google Media Server is a Google Desktop add-on that provides a way to get PC media content onto your TV. With the help of a UPnP device, Google Media Server collects all the relevant media files from your PC and makes them available over a local host. While it doesn't seem as direct as a device like SlingCatcher, it's probably a whole lot cheaper. Google Media Server is available for download here. [Google Media Server via Crunch Gear]

There's no getting around the fact that you still need a device hooked up to your TV.

More importantly, will it support .mkv through the 360 media center extender?

Does it support .mkv? If not, go away.

Sounds similar to what WMP or TVersity do. If so, it should work with the PS3. If it's good, it'll be nice to have an alternative to those, erm, not-so-fantastic apps.

Ahhhhh... media server wrapped in google smoked bacon... mmmmmmmmmm
This will be great. I hate WMP and TVersity is kind of annoying too. Hopefully this will be nice and easy to stream to the ps3

A couple of months ago Google and Nielsen/NetRatings made a deal, where Google would receive demographic information for its Google TV Ads platform. This was one of the first efforts towards trying to spread their distribution channels. (You can check the story at [www.internetevolution.com] )
This article presents the next step, but not the final one. They still are only working around with software but I think the use of some type of hardware is essential.
