Gizmodo's iPhone SDK App Contest
Posted by Jason Chen at 3:01 AM on June 18, 2008
We saw a number of iPhone SDK applications demoed during the WWDC keynote last week, some of which--like the physics-based game Enigmo--were fantastic. With over 250,000 kits downloaded and 4,000 admitted to the iPhone beta program, we're sure you guys have come up with something as good, or even better than that. That's why we're holding our own Gizmodo iPhone App Contest.
You're proud of the work you've put into your iPhone SDK application. Show us what you did. Email your entry to tips@gizmodo.com with the subject "iPhone SDK App Contest: Name of App" with the name of your app there. Each entry should include screenshots (as many as it takes to properly illustrate your program) as well as a 1 paragraph description telling us what it's all about. We'll showcase the best ones here for the world to gawk at.
We also know that there are tons of very cool applications such as Sling that might not even be approved by Apple as an official SDK app. That's why we're taking entrants for unofficial (jailbroken) apps as well. Send those in to tips@gizmodo.com with the subject "iPhone Unofficial App Contest: Name of App". Essentially, we'll be getting a weird kinda sorta head-to-head that pits bigger name companies/development teams against hackers.

@evangelistc01: If you aren't one of the 4000 that got accepted into the development program, you can't put it on your iPhone / iPod Touch yet. I have it on my phone but it doesn't actually connect to anything yet, so I wouldn't worry about it too much right now.

@agentUrge: Are indie-developers sorta like those indie-hipsters I see walking around with painted on jeans atop flourescent Nike SB/Dunks sporting those extra-homo plain purple American Aparrel hoodies, chatting it up with their exact replica best friend about their favourite unknown band and discussing their emotions?

@krispykrink: There's a jailbreak application that lets you add speed dials as application buttons. It seems like a great idea, but with multiple application pages, it takes way too long to find a specific person. It's much easier to set up double click to go directly to your favorites list. If they would allow each click of the home button to advance to the next page, then it might be easier to deal with large app/contact lists on the home screen(s).
Hooray for this contest, btw. Ars has been reviewing a few of these apps in depth, and it's doing a good job of tiding me over until the 11th. That and the mac enigmo demo.

This is a great chance for the indie-developers to strut their stuff and get some recognition. Big ups, to Gizmodo for something like this.

@takemetoyourtoaster:
The iPhone 3G is cheaper because of AT&T subsidies. If you don't activate the phone, you'll most likely be slapped with at least $200 in penalties.

hey guys I just got an 100 dollar gift card to the apple store, I was thinking that I would get an ipod touch, I looked at it and it is 300 dollars, 100 more than the iphone 3g, two questions, do you think the price is going to go down dramatically? and do you think I should buy it if I already have an N810?

I'll toss this out as inspiration for someone that's a codemonkey:
1. Ability to add a Contact to a Home Screen, similar to a web clip. It'll service as some sort of speed dial.
1. I really hope the AdiumX guys are going to make this, but if not... A multi-network IM app

Captain Nit-picky here.
You wouldn't really call it "The Gizmodo's iPhone Application Contest", would you? Maybe the word "the" serves to elevate the event, much like "the Ohio State University"?

@ASCurtis:
No, indie developers will most likely be wearing Sketchers, Jeans, and a shirt that has to do with videogames.
However if we had less indie hipsters and more indie developers, than the iphone would be better, and more popular among indie hipsters.

Situation: You walk away from your iPhone for a sec, and you get text's as well as calls.
Problem: Without using the phone for whatever reason.. you never know (in a timely manner) that you have missed those calls or texts.
Solution: somebody making a program that alerts you the sec you get back to your phone.
(I do not have an iphone yet, but noticed this issue with my family member) - the public would prob say "you are not using your iphone enough" or " what?! you let you iphone alone!

Watch for the hype. Enigmo has been out since 2003 and the iPhone version is a quick port. What is clear from a lot of the awards is that there is little new and that there is not much that hasn't been seen somewhere else. At least not public yet. EA and Sega were all their portable game platform. Just mapping an accelerometer into joystick controls doesn't do much good. iPhone will be successful with breakthrough software that is designed for the iPhone and that nobody has seen anywhere else. That's what new platform should do. If it doesn't, iPhone will fade. The world doesn't need another phone to run BREW or Symbian craplets!

Cool idea, but you may want to do this after the App store launches and the SDK comes out of beta, so developers are not reluctant to release screenshots (technically a violation of the NDA).
