Dual Core Atoms Delayed, World Weeps
Posted by Mark Wilson at 1:48 AM on June 26, 2008
Intel's tiny, cheap, power-efficient Atom chips are performing every bit as well as we could have hoped. So you know what should be even better? Intel's dual core Atom chips. Unfortunately, product shortages on the Atom 220 (original) are delaying production on the 330 (dual core)--Intel's original Atom is simply selling too well to justify releasing a better product yet. So whereas we'd expected to see new chips in July, we could be waiting until September...or later. Damn. [Register Hardware]

ugh, this is why having a monopoly on the chip industry is bad. no pressure to move forward.

I guess this would ge great for a laptop, but people would expect this thing to perform. Kind of like a person who buys a ford rouch mustang and expects it to perform like a ferri or porche.

@regnez: Perhaps so it doesn't fry your testicles when using it on your lap?

@CutePuppyz:
But the MBA already has a dual-core 1.6ghz Core 2 based processor that is (presumably) much faster than a dual-core Atom would be.
Why would Apple take a step back in processing power?

No rush. Most people haven't even gotten an Atom-based machine yet. I'll wait for the dual core ones...hopefully squeeze one in a revised version of MBA and I might consider a buy.

It looks like I'll have to wait a little longer for my UMPC.

Can one atom really have to cores? wouldnt that make it a molecule?

@CutePuppyz: I was thinking in battery terms. But yes, yes you are correct.

Aww screw that then. I'm gonna get the Fly Creek instead.

I hope your assessment is wrong about why they wouldn't want to release a dual core, which would certainly benefit some consumers.
I hope instead that they are not pursuing the production of the 330s because they have contractual obligations to fulfill to integrators before making the next improvement in the line.

I'm building an atom-based low power file server right now. Can't beat $76 for a motherboard + CPU.

Having worked for an un-named chip behemoth within the last 6 months, I would be surprised if we see a dual-core Atom before 2010.

Performing as well as giz expected? I hope it wasn't much, since a 3-year old single core Celeron is considerably faster than an Atom at the same clock speed. Sure its much hotter, but the performance sucks on the Atom in any case.
