DIY Sleeping Mask Puts You In Control of Your Dreams
Posted by Benny Goldman at 9:50 AM on June 21, 2008
There's a Lucid Dream Machine sleeping mask on Instructables that pulses LEDs in your eyelids four hours after you fall asleep, waking you up just enough to notice your dreams and control their outcomes. The mask requires a fair bit of soldering and programming experience, so it isn't for DIY luddites like me. Which is good, because my sleep is too precious and my dreams are too weird to want one of these anyway. [Instructables via Make]

The product being modeled is called the DreamLight. What makes the DreamLight so successful is that it monitors your eye movement and flashes the lights during REM sleep, when dreaming is most likely to occur.
This one does not do that, but still can help I'm sure. Dreaming does occur outside of REM sleep.

They've sold these sort of things for years. The best commercial brands detect when you go into rem sleep based on your eye movements. Cheaper brands have a timer that you can tweak. This is neat, but just a diy version of a pretty old science.

I use lucid dreaming without any tools
you need to know that you are sleeping to activate it
But yet i rather invade dreams ^__^

Nothing helps one have a restful sleep like blinking lights right in front of one's eyes.

@Atheist Jew: as a matter of fact, there have been tests on products like this, and they do work on most people, but it really takes a lot of tweaking to get it to work consistently. And, in fact, yes, you could do those things while in a lucid dream. Lucid dreaming is (in theory) a way to unlock more of your brain power than you can while conscious.

I've been experimenting with lucid dreaming for a while now, and, given that it took about three months to get to the point where I could dream lucidly 75% of the time, I find this a horrible shortcut.

According to my mother who was a sleep technician for several years, this isn't likely to work because you don't know when you go in to your REM sleep. I guess it changes?
Also, who the hell is going to want to sleep with that on?

You'll need to be in control of your dreams b.c that will be the only way to get laid if you have this thing.

If this was actually proven in controlled conditions to work, this guy could theretically make a fortune. Who wouldn't want to control one's dreams? You could fly, and be aware you were in a dream. Or you could have an orgy with a bevy of leggy supermodels. Or you could fly WHILE having an orgy with a bevy of leggy supermodels! Were this an actual product deemed safe for every day use I'd certainly lay down money on it.

About 10 years ago I used to get a catalog that sold a "lucid dreamer" which was exactly like this but less...do it yourself. It came already built and cost about $80.

@Atheist Jew: It doesn't always work that way. I've found that in lucid dreams (dreams where I'm aware I'm dreaming) I'm often still confined by some random rules. For example, I'm able to set things on fire with my mind and jump really high, but I'm unable to outright fly or spawn beautiful women at whim. And other times, I can spawn and control women but unable to do anything else. The subconscious still has most control, at least for me. That doesn't mean they are a hell of a lot of fun - they are, and I'd love to have more of them.

Does anyone know the name of the song that plays during the video that demonstrates how to use it?
I know its daft punk, but i cannot remember for the life of me the name of the song =\

Would be great, if only I could sleep with that thing attached to my head.
I guess it won't be long before someone makes a product that doesn't need to be attatched to the head.
And that also works as a non-intrusive alarm... like a wrist watch that Giz posted a while ago.

Meh, there is a much simpler way. Everytime you see anything mundane in life, ask yourself "Am I dreaming?". A good start is everytime you see a green light driving, ask yourself this. Then while asleep you will ask yourself, "Am I dreaming?" and you will know you are. 0 skills needed.

Control your dreams with the slight chance of rolling over in your and jabbing your eyes with blinking led's. I think I'll pass

@ethanlechcharles: "this isn't likely to work because you don't know when you go in to your REM sleep."
That's what the timer's for.

I got pretty good at lucid dreaming, without any aids, at one point. I don't do it much these days, mostly because I don't think about it often. It's actually one of the funnest things you can do.

@all: What if there is no such thing as lucid dreaming and your subconcious was actually in control the whole time? What if the dream was that you had control of your dream? It's just an interesting angle that came to me while reading the comments.

For those who reach a state of lucidity... A past guru of mine once said the following, "If you start searching for the p*ssy, it'll disappear. Instead say still, imagine a red lotus above your head, and the p*ssy will appear on it's own".

yes but what about the ancients who determine your future events from dream meanings? hmm, this could change a lot. I hear pooping in a dream is equivalent to great wealth.
also, this product can contribute to having really safe sex. in fact, people wouldn't even bother mating at all, they'd just hook up, and dream about that person all they want, hell, marriage and kids and grandkids, and traveling,
Why liiiive?!!! when you can always dreaaaaaaam.
hahaha.. I want to see where this goes.

@Mr. Black: What's with the "p*ssy," and what's imagining a sports car got to do with finding your cat? I always just go, "Here pussy pussy pussy! Here pussy pussy pussy!" Works like a dream.
@ethanlechcharles: So you adjust the timer to catch the REM cycle. It's fairly regular, and not that hard to figure out.

@gadgetplay
you are right it is not that difficult to figure out
more importantly you dont need to as the other four stages of sleep are fairly deep, and stage 4 sleep is semi-catatonic. they just beep away into your eyeballs until you finally reach REM sleep and catch a glimpse of the light
just a little insight

It is all fun and games in the lucid world, until you roll over and shatter led's in your eye.

If you want vivid, lucid dreams, just drink some coffee with a lot of sugar in it and that will trigger some pretty vivid crap if you can get to sleep after drinking it. I've had a lot of lucid dreams but controlling them is another matter, some eye goggles aren't going to allow you to do that.

My technique for lucid dreaming was thinking about it a lot so that it was more likely to be part of my dreams, and to keep trying to remember to spin around or clap my hands if I'm in a dream. Once I did those things in a dream I would have control.

Man, this is, kinda cool, really.
I had got dreams, where I had came to get a hold of them, and when I woke up, and realize I was controling my own dream, I wanna keep dreaming sooo bad, but with the shock I just can't sleep again. Most times, I woke up around 4 or 5 am, and becuz I can't sleep again I just turn on my Wii or PS3 and get to play while its time to got to work

I don't really need one of these. I've got a smoke detector that does a single loud short beep every 4 hours for no reason. It's not a battery issue! and I can't turn it off because it is wired to the house's electricity. It's enough of a beep to trigger a dream every night. Ugh
