DIY Iron Man Repulsor Light Won't Repulse Anybody, May Dazzle 'Em
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 4:00 AM on June 30, 2008
DIY gadgeteer Carlos at Carlito's Contraptions and Tony Stark have at least one thing in common: they like to tinker with homemade gizmos and strap 'em onto their bodies. Sadly Carlos didn't have access to Tony's array of sci-fi gadget impossibilities, but that didn't stop him from producing this palm-mounted ultra-bright LED flashlight in a sturdy aluminium frame that's activated with a cocked wrist. Check out the video to see it in action.
Follow the rough DIY instructions, match it up with the DIY arc reactor, and you'd have the start of your own iron suit...with just the rockets, weapons and other flim-flam to put together in your garage. [Carlito's Contraptions via Hacked Gadgets]

Did anyone else understand whether or not he could move his hand freely? I felt he was a bit unclear on that part.

I expected something really dumb, but this looks like a fairly impressive bit of work.

Now all he has to do is build the suit.

I'm thinkin' version 2 ought to incorporate surface-mount LEDs, so he can make the thing less chunky. Very cool, though.

Oh, I beg do differ. This will definitely repulse most chicks... At least most of the chicks I know. Nerdism!

@BoinK:
Maybe you should send him an e-mail asking for thorough details on just how flexible hand movement can be with this contraption.

Thhe music sounds like the theme from the Iron Man cartoon. The crappy one that has the West Coast Avengers and The Mandarin (an Modok), heh.

All he needs now are hot chicks and a drink in his hand. Wait, reality check--he's still a nerd and probably not hold enough to buy liquor.

That's pretty cool, but does it allow free hand motion?

@graphicwave: That's what I was wondering. I couldn't tell very well from the video.

Hmm, could use maybe a diffuser in front of the LEDs, or maybe some light piping to flatten it a bit.
@yayaba: Yeah, after watching it a few more times, it's still not clear if it allows full hand motion...

I'm sorry, no. I don't think so.

Good one...
Just be careful not to look at the LED's directly from a close distance. Some high power may cause permanent damage to eyes.

The guy should check out these LED puck lights from IKEA. They're not as bright, but they are super-thin:

It shouldn't take a video 40 seconds to demonstrate to me something that allows for full hand motion

Two comments: That was one the few pieces of techno that I've actually liked in a long time. Anyone know the artist or title? Second... He needs to carve out some of that extra flesh and embed the LED's in the tissue. That would reduce the dorkiness factor. ;-)

it looks very dependent on the exact distance between the wrist part and palm part... does it need to be recalibrated every time you put it on?

Is this really what the world has come to? I mean you would think someone would have come up with a way to turn themselves big and green. Wake me up then and maybe I will be impressed.

That bar that adjusts the brightness keeps jabbing him in the arm. Might want to fix that the Mark 2.
