Dell's 27-inch UltraSharp 2709W LCD
Posted by Sean Fallon at 3:26 AM on June 20, 2008
Like the 27-inch 2707WFP before it, Dell's new UltraSharp 2709W features a mediocre 1920 by 1200 resolution with a 9-in-2 media card reader and 6ms response time, but the contrast ratio has been upgraded to to 3000:1 and the brightness level to 450 nits. Outside of that you will get just about every port you could possibly need--from USB to HDMI to DisplayPort. Plus, it can be had for US$999, which is only about US$200 more than the 2707WFP is selling for right now on the Dell website (still a bit pricey if you ask me).

I wonder why Dell screens are so pricey, IMO, if they were the same price as a Samsung screen, i would take the Samsung screen. Anyway, quick question. What's the viewing distance recommended for a 24" monitor? Thanks.

I have two 24" LCDs that I paid much less the $300 each for. Why would I pay more the tripple for 3", at least for a monitor, lol.

If their going to make a monitor at this size how about one with the resolution of the 30" for a lower price since it's smaller. Seems like a no brainer!

This one seems disappointing for the price. Historically the UltraSharps have had the good Samsung panels but this one seems unremarkable for a grand.
Ports are all well and good but for that kind of money Id rather have a good LCD.

I have never had problems with Dell flat screens. I have bought a lot of them for the office. If one waits, one can get a good deal at the refurb shop. Just remember to check the stats. A slightly different product number may mean a big difference in contrast, brightness, or other important features.

@Nighthawkz: The Dell UltraSharp line uses PVA panels (I think) vs. the "normal priced" flat panel that probably uses TN panels. Take a look at some threads that describe the difference between the Dell E248WFP($400) and Dell UltraSharp 2408WFP($600) [www.google.com]

I like their LCDs (the UltraSharps only). I've about a dozen in the office and 4 at home. (I'd like to replace 2-24" with 2-30"...)

i am not familiar in the 27" class
but if 2709W outclass 2708W then it is only good news
cause then it is improved even more
but yet still very expensive, but Dell was never cheap

It looks nice - at least, the physical part of it does, anyway. I can't stand LCD displays that have big, chunky, crappy-speaker-laden frames all around them. The ultimate display would be completely frameless, in my book.

Does any one else find it odd that the Dell diplays are always showing a very Apple wallpaper?

@Blah8: everything is mediocre around here. there is no spec that is anything other than mediocre even if it bests all competitors.
I guess gadget freaks are hard to please.

Mediocre? 1920x1200 is mediocre now? :-P

increased resolution just means more annoying little artifacts you can see but don't want to. Anything more than 720P looks worse to me not better. A good 720P plasma is as "resolved" as I would want to buy in the next 5 years.

@Blah8: for a 27" computer monitor, yeah.
24" lcds are mostly 1920x1200, and the extra inches are wasted unless I'm using it as a tv or something.

Or just get 30", which has the same contrast ratio, looks better, and has 70% pixel space! Double the price doesn't make it seem that bad...

@bxstrb:
People...don't forget that there are only a few makers of the actually LCD panels. Dell makes monitors with what they can buy. That said, I do hope this is one of the better panels and not the cheap stuff they started using on the 20" Ultrasharps!
