Dell Studio Notebooks Officially Bring Decent Design to Mid-Range
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 2:00 PM on June 26, 2008
Studio is Dell's new line of notebooks that'll sit in between Inspiron (low end) and XPS (high end), taking design cues from the latter--like its tapered lines, hinge design and slot-loading optical drive--and bringing 'em to a more value-oriented set, with a Skittles seven colour palette (and some cool artist designs coming later). Yes, Dell finally gets that design matters, even in the chubby middle! The 15-inch model starts at US$799, but LED backlighting, Blu-ray options or upgrading to the 17-incher will obviously bump that up. We've got the full spec list for each below, if you're itchin' to see the numbers.

@impreza: Is there any news that you know about for the e? I have a client that is dying to get an eeepc (and as much as its against my Apple loving ways) I told him to wait for the E.

Wish the lid color was also on the bottom. The grey doesn't really go so well with some of the colors.

Can we really tell that it's decent design from these shots?

Is that ridiculous, medieval style font really necessary for the specs page?
Those are some good-looking notebooks, but man that is an ugly font.

Hmm...how hard would it be to take the purple one and put an actual computer inside?

Slot-loading drives are my arch nemesis as far as computing goes.

@taftsearlobe33:
why? do you prefer the perpetually broken drivers from nVidia or something?

@willyolio: No I think he just likes stuff that works.

I think we can all agree that it takes more than just changing the color of the notebooks to call it "design".
Does the keyboard still suck like mush? Are the finishes still cheap like it's put together in the 3rd world? Do they still use cheap plastics that feels like it's falling apart? Until these questions are answered, I'll reserve praise.

Notebookreview.com has a hands-on review posted today.
You ain't gettin' one for $799 unless you want basic computing. Add a few options like a 7200 rrpm HD , the LED display and a 3-year warranty and it is almost $1900 with a $250 savings bonus thing.

VGA ports still? Halfway through 2008? On models with "Studio" in their names, which seems to imply that people interested in aesthetics will use them? Blah.
It's time for VGA ports to be retired from all computers and for DVI to become the new minimum standard (or perhaps even DisplayPort). People who buy new notebooks yet wish to connect them to displays that are too old to have DVI inputs (or otherwise inexplicably opt for VGA over DVI) can use adapters.
Seriously.
