Dell Extends Windows XP Home Deadline to June 26, Cites 'Popular Demand'
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 3:00 AM on June 22, 2008
Dell wrote us to say that due to popular demand (read: common sense), they are extending the deadline for customers who want to order systems with Windows XP Home premium. As of today, a Dell rep said customers can order select configurations of the Inspiron 530 or 530s desktops with Windows XP Home Premium through June 26. This means if you're in the market for a Dell, and don't want to pay the surcharge for downgrading your bundle from Vista to XP, you have a few more days to do it. [Dell]

Allow me to post the mandatory, "I've had Vista since day 1 and haven't had any problems" post.
I was under the impression the only people who had trouble with Vista were those who were clueless about computers.

Interesting; the presumption is anyone dumb enough to buy a dell is smart enough to get WinXP

I think the real question is...Jack Loftus? This character only posts like 10 stories a month. If that. And Xp home premium? Your inadequacies abound, Jack Loftus!
Jk, I <3 you.

Let's see my options.
1. Windows - FU Customers! Buy our new OS that doesn't work with old hardware.
2. Mac - Expensive
3. Linux - Where is the driver again?!!
Will there ever be a day when we can get a cheap OS that just works?

So... 5 days more?!? That's it? If they truly went with "popular demand" then they wouldn't be offering Vista at all.

@MrMaestr0:
yeah about that...
I may or may not do tech support for Verizon PDA/smartphones and anything pertaining to their operation and if you try to sync your phone with vista its like a 1 in a billion chance that it'll work right... and I am NOT clueless about computers, vista just isn't fun.
XP, on the other hand works almost 100% of the time, its much nicer.

WTF is Windows XP Home Premium? Who the F is Jack Loftus? What the F is Vitsa?

I think that they just have all the unsold inventory and that they really wished that there was "Popular demand"!

Unfortunately, they only offer XP on their subpar machines. I was going to buy an XPS1530 a couple of weeks ago, and when I asked customer services if I could get it with XP, they told me no.
I ended up going with with a MacBookPro running XP pro.

If they made a perfect os then no one would have to buy a new computer, linux is trying its best to offer this, but it just doesnt have the man power or main stream support required to do it sucessfully. If there was one linux distro instead of 1000000 then maybe they could make a perfect os, but for now you have four options
1. Xp -Old, ugly
2. Vista - Slow
3. Mac OSX - expensive hardware required
4. Linux - hard to use at first
I have chosen 3, and 4.

This post with the messed up name got me thinking it would be nice if MS would just get over themselves and offer an "XP Ultimate" upgrade with all the multimedia features (more than XP media center 2005) to tide us all over until Windows 7 makes its early debut and they shit-can Vista.

@towlie420: What about Ubuntu? (I use slackware so I have no idea how much easier Ubuntu is, but from what I hear it shouldn't be that hard to use, therefore making it a linux distro without the problems.)

Vista Works pretty well on boot camp, didn't on my crappy compaq.
@HawkSkater0:
1-yes, but it works to play games
2-yeah pretty much
3-but the investment is worth it
4-takes care of the computers that cant run vista
and I have chosen all 4

@MrMaestr0: Wow, really? clueless about computers? Interesting, considering I built my own computer and have been working at two computer stores in the last several years...I just really hated Vista. XP is my friend, cause it plays older games that I would rather not toss cause of a new shiny, not-as-compatible OS.

As long as they continue to provide drivers.
That's what I'd worry about.

@jmurph05: I have chosen 3 and 4 by my own will. I was forced to use 1 because of my obsession of customizing every thing i own and i liked playing games. I chose 3 because I love macs and i needed it for editting. And i chose 4 because Ubuntu looks better then vista and runs better then xp.
@wvv: UBUNTU!!!!!!!!!

@soggy_cheerio: Its both good and bad, I love linux, its fun to use, looks great, and is very well programed, but i also love my mac. I love the GUI, the ease of use and the unmatched stability. If I had a choice, I would run them both.

@HawkSkater0: That would be an example of "not having a choice". Sucks doesn't it?
I do wish more people would jump in and play around with Linux. Unfortunately, I don't think it will ever be able to do enough hand holding for the moronic majority of computer users.

@Karinabob: Not exactly the best way to convince people you aren't clueless about computers.
Oooh wow, you built your own computer. All that says is you know how to use a screwdriver. Okay, you've worked for two years at a "computer store." Not to burst your bubble or anything, but there are more than a few giz readers who have more technical knowledge in one pinky than those who work in "computer stores."
Pure and simple, Vista missed the mark bigtime. For as long as it took to get it out, people were expecting more, rightfully so, in my opinion. In the meantime, XP had plenty of time to mature and ripen. What you're left with is a situation where for a vast majority of users, both business and consumer, Vista just isn't worth the hassle.
Even though I often develop for Windows, I took the opportunity to dive more deeply into Linux than I had previously. And, I haven't looked back. I can still do everything I need to do on my Linux box, and I enjoy the experience that much more. As much as Apple, "just works", you won't catch me on a Mac. I enjoy choice too much. For a large number of people, that isn't an issue.
Whatever operating system it is, the only thing that is important is that "it works." For me, it's Linux. For you, it's Vista. For some, it's OS X. I just like having a choice.

Well alright, I retract my last statement, and in it's place I would like to question why it is that people come on here just to say rude things to people for no actual....reason. I find that to be extremly senseless, and I only say rude things to people if they say or imply rude things to me first. It's just silly, and a waste of time for everyone. Just thought I would...throw that out there.
