Dance Charge Prototype Powers Phones By Your Furious Robot Moves
Posted by Jason Chen at 3:45 AM on June 25, 2008
Orange, a mobile phone provider in the UK, has just developed a couple prototypes of this Dance Charge mobile phone charger. You wrap this thing around your arm while you're dancing and your kinetic energy will translate into electricity to power your phone. It's like those flashlights that you have to shake before use, but much, much nerdier. Combine this with the fictional breast charger and you'll be able to power the entire DJ booth with just your flailing limbs. How they got that one chubby doctor from Grey's Anatomy to pose for promo pics is anyone's guess. [Reg Hardware via Tech Digest]

With this quietly growing trend with kinetic charging a la As-Seen-On-TV shaking charge flashlight, it makes one wonder how many different repetitive motions can be harnessed for power. Imagine if 5, no 8, no 10, no 15, no 20,...no ok let's go with 15 minutes could charge a cell phone.
Yeah, 15's believable.

@AmishJohn: 15 seconds? Hmm. Who goes jogging for 15 seconds? And strapping it to your shoe is really not that bad of an idea.

@GeekyNerdGuy: Who are we talking about? I can't think of a chubby doctor on Grey's Anatomy.
On the other hand, Catherine Heigl, from Grey's Anatomy, has been know to ... I can't say it. It's too crass, but it does involve the word "chubby."

@ripfire: Probably; but what electronic item will charge in 15 seconds?

@ripfire: One of the Giz staff had to use it after being attacked by a Koopa.

@adamator: There would be a lot more energy if it was strapped to... oh nevermind.
Btw, what happened to the 1up mushroom article?

Wouldn't there be a lot more kinetic energy if it was strapped to her wrist instead of upper arm?

Chubby doctor from Grey's Anatomy? Just because they both have horse teeth, it doesn't make them twins.

At least she doesn't have blonde teeth, I guess.

Is kinetic energy the new solar panel?

Pretty soon, we'll be pushing our cars like Fred Flintstone.

Am the only one who is waiting for a human-energy device that charges something by giving me a huge badass leg or arm gantry? Like, a metallic sleeve or knee brace with spikes on it?
If we're gonna do the whole cyborg thing, let's do it up proper. Neoprene and velcro are for sissies.

I think this is the part where someone cues that song by CC Music Factory.

@Kaiser-Machead's Chips Ahoy!: It is creating job opportunities for people with epilepsy and parkinsons.
I foresee a world where the shoeshine stand has been replaced by sweaty men offering to shake-charge your phone while you wait in your neatly pressed suit.

I'd rather strap it to my dog or a 5 year old kid. They wiggle ten times as much as me anyway.

@ps61318: When I think of chubby, I think of Torres. I didn't even think Heigl until you said it.
I don't know. I don't know what Chen was seeing. I guess I need Chenvision.

@ps61318: I don't think statuesque quite fits with rubenesque and zaftig. Usually statues have hard bodies.

@GeekyNerdGuy: Torres, right, although I think "zaftig" or "statuesque" or even, if pushed, "Rubenesque" as opposed to chubby. But hey, chubby is in the eye of the beholder, I guess.
