Cubicle Farm Rampage Video Was Just a Viral Marketing Stunt
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 9:29 AM on June 11, 2008
Last week's post about a guy absolutely losing his shit in a becubicled office turned out to be a viral ad for Wanted, that new action film with James MacAvoy and Angeline Jolie. I guess the video could be considered a success in that it was convincing and popular, but the fact that it is associated with a commercial film was and will remain lost on just about everyone. @pir8matt: If you watch the red band trailer (technically explicit) you can see the reference. Even after watching it though it's kindof a stretch.

When I first saw this something about it seemed kinda fake, but I dismissed it. I guess I should stop doing that.

A lot of people called it, since the monitors acted like they weren't even attached to any PC's and the most shoddily put together office ever seen with walls falling apart so easily.
A lot of people had really strange arguments about why it could be real, including that people who put cubes together are lazy and do not connect the walls properly.

Well duh. The monitor on his desk (that he threw at the girl next to him) wasn't even plugged into anything. That pretty much had FAKE written all over it from then on. And everyone was just standing around looking at him freak out, while not one person tried to grab a hold of him. It reeked of viral advertising if you ask me.

If I see another movie with Morgan Freeman playing the same fucking part I'm going to scream. Aaaa. There. I was sick of him playing that part years ago. Stop hiring him. Plus, he's looking goofier every year.

Isn't one of the main points of marketing something to actually know the "thing" that is being marketed? How could this possibly be considered successful? If that was Angelina getting nailed by the monitor I sure couldn't tell.

@LJN: We may be talking about it, but I for one don't want to see the movie just because the "viral ad" was lame. There's no reference to the movie in that video, so ef them.

You know what? I'm not watching that movie. Ok, maybe I will because I watch a lot of movies, but if so, it'll be pirated.
Because I f*cking hate viral marketers. They should all die in a pit of molten lava.

If the part where he half-assed swung the ax/lamp whatever he was swinging at the dude that was trying to stop him, didn't convince you it was fake, you need to re-examine your fact checkers!

No kidding! That's a marketing stunt? I actually related to the guy in the video. I've wanted to throw computers around and go off on people. But, I think they deserved it. They definitely had it coming. Going off like that would feel so good. But, I'd be the kind of guy who picks up the monitor and then thinks about it. I'd put it back down and look for something else. By then, I'd forget I'm mad.
