CCTV-busting, DIY LED Glasses Makes Robbing a Store/Bank/Warehouse 4x Easier!
Posted by Adrian Covert at 8:00 AM on June 28, 2008
Don't you hate it when your perfect heist is foiled by some hidden camera that serves your head to the police on a platter? Well some deviant genius posted a video on Metacafe showing you how to create a pair of LED shades that hides your face on CCTV. All you need are a couple of LEDs, some wire, tiny batteries and a bit of skill. But if committing felonies aren't quite your thing, maybe you'll appreciate the fact these also make you look like some possessed spawn of Satan on camera. [Metacafe via Red Ferret]

@pipper: Exactly what I was thinking. Getting busted by a copper is one thing but getting a big-ass ticket in the mail from some company who is paid a "commission" for every citation it issues is a whole other thing...

How about a mod like this for Japanese porn, so you get that pleasing light instead of the annoying blurriness?

I have thought of similar idea years ago:
Since most traffic camera uses CCD or CMOS sensors which basically captures infrared light spectrum as well, it MIGHT work if I wire up multitude of infrared bulbs around the license plate. It might saturate the sensor and hide the license plate #.
Never again get caught running red lights or speeding in your neighborhood?

Wait.... BEST.IDEA.EVER.
install these on your car by your license plates and viola no more video evidence of your wrongdoings!

if you know where the cameras are, you can set up little lasers on mini tripods and shine em into the lenses. it'll white out the image completely.

... not mention this would only work within the field of vision for the IR LEDs. Which are usualy pretty damn narrow. Give the camera your side profile or a little more and it'll see you just fine.
So instead of IR LED glasses you would need an IR LED Halo around your head.
Don't forget to IR LED your visible tattoos!!!!

I wanna think of a better way to implement this one. Maybe a flashlight sort of thing so people can't take pictures of me. Good idea.

I'm surprised no one's busted this article yet with a correction.
It's IR LEDs. Not just LED's.
Also, that's ONLY if the camera supports IR night vision. Otherwise the IR LEDs aren't enhanced and will just look like two tiny white dots on their head.
Also, CCTV specifically has nothing to do with it. The system doesn't have to be "closed circuit".
Plus, in many cases this has been BUSTED. I tried it myself with my IR Wii Glasses and sure enough, both my standard cameras and night vision cameras just saw two tiny little dots on my head. I forget which fixed position cameras we have and the night vision ones are Canon VB-C50iR.

@nutbastard:
im gonna go with this is way harder and less convienient than these glasses. not too mention its probably the hardest thing ever to do discretely and then to control all of the variables, i dont think so.

@nutbastard: I dunno... there are filters that can delete the laser light data. Maybe the near-IR flashlights from Inside Man are the way to go for your idea.

I'm not sure about your neck of the woods but the speeders thought up using bright LEDs, IR and other, to beat cameras for years, and in most countries having such installed in itself is an assured very considerable fine.
I'm guessing in the US they also made laws to punish such attempts years ago already.
(Oh and special reflective coating on plates against flash speedcams are also already outlawed everywhere.)
And I bet the crooks that use it to defeat shop-cameras during robberies will forget to turn them off outside and make a perfect target to spot by police choppers :)

@pipper: CCD and CMOS sensors are sensitive to short-wave IR light, but for daytime viewing security cameras use an IR-blocking filter that shops IR reaching the sensor and washing out the colors. For low-light, night time use, the filter is moved out of the way.
As a result this would only work at night.

I made a pair of these a while ago, for working under my car. Sometimes, with a flashlight, you just can't get light where you need it.

I remember doing a pair of these along time ago for working under my car at my apartment complex. Snaking an extension cord that long would've not been possible. Sometimes, with a flashlight, you just can't get light where you need it.
Super cool!

Ariel_Wollinger -> And, they seem to ignore the litigus society that we live in. If Famous people ever did start wearing these, the paparazzi (and others) would sue for damages to their eyes.
While it is possible to shield the wearer from damage, the people nearby that keep staring at your funny looking glasses may not be so lucky.
In any event.....you are guaranteed to see these on America's Most Wanted in the coming weeks. Then IR filters will become common on cameras and the gig will be up.
