Brando's Firefly Lamp: For Those Romantic Digital Insect-Light Moments
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 10:00 PM on June 19, 2008
A non-USB product from Brando, and one that's surprisingly cute? Good grief, I nearly fell off my keyboard. These Firefly jars are solar-powered, charging up during the day and adding a simulated bioluminescent insect-arse glow to wherever you pop them at night. The kitchen worktop, perhaps—perfect for lighting your way to that midnight snack. Standing 15.2 cms high, they glow in orange, but are they more eco-friendly than trapping a real firefly in a jar? Probably not... but at least its kinder to animals. Available now for US$45. [Brando]

as opposed to them being available everywhere for a long time? even Thinkgeek has had them for over a year at $34.99.
Come on Giz, is it "post the press releases day"?

@aphex: I think Instructables has them too. Do you know if you can make them where the LED flickers, a la a firefly.

Otherwise known as the Sun Jar. I got one for my birthday, after having eyed them for over a year. Because it was an appreciated gift, I can't bring myself to dissect it.
They're made by a company called Suck. Seriously!

These products SUCK! (And I don't mean that because I bought two from Suck, UK., for my sister).
The circuits are hotglued together, the NiMh battery tray decomposes or is cracked from shipping; its junk.
Good idea, poor Q/C. Slow week at Giz?

Had they used some LED color combinations and/or filters to make it the correct lightning bug greenish-yellow glow, I might've bought some.

That is like 2 years old. It was made by a designer by the name Tobias Wong. Right along side the Micky D's Coke spoon.

@dianebrat: @graffiksguru:
you both beat me... i was gonna post the links to both, but (considering shipping from the UK to the US), thinkgeek's price is better.
