Biggest Flyer In the World Makes Everyone Look Like Ants
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 1:40 AM on June 4, 2008
This is the view from the biggest flyer in the world, a 150-metre diameter monster located in Singapore, 5 metres bigger than the Star of Nanchang, China, and 30 metres more than the London Eye (which I'm looking at right now, after moving into the city this weekend.) The capsules' interior look straight out of 2001: A Space Odyssey, and rolling in them must feel as slow as the movie itself: a complete trip—which allows you to admire views 45 kms away—takes 30 minutes. geez... given Shanghai's horrendous air quality most days of the year lately, it'll be damn near impossible to get a view like that much of the time.
Hmm.. variable pricing model tied to kilometers of visibility?

I'd take a ride...if I was in Singapore. The BA Eye takes 30 minutes too. It felt like it went pretty quick though. I could've gone for an extra 30, but I was taking pictures, so time flies.

Yeah, I have actually seen this in real life, but not ridden it. It is SLOW as hell. At first, I though it wasn't even moving, but the taxi driver told me that is it just SO slow that it doesn't even look like its moving.

Yes it's a ferris wheel or observation wheel (for larger ones). Never heard anyone call it a flyer until today. Even the Singapore Flyer's website calls itself an observation wheel. "Flyer's" is just what they named the wheel.

It's not cheap - the standard fare is around $21 (S$29.50). That's a lot for a thirty-minute slow rolling...ride....

What gets me is that people are able to create these wonderful designs and actually gather enough support to make them, yet if they stretch this ferris wheel flat and call it a monorail.. then it never happens in real life.
Wouldn't it be nice to be able to commute in a monorail that looked like that?...
Wouldn't a city look modern, clean and stylish with it?...
Wouldn't they be able to install them in just a few months instead of years?...
You would provably answer YES to all of these... but unfortunatelly we live in a wold with unions, city contract payoffs, political influence, etc.. that shapes the city the way it is, not the way it SHOULD be.
I live in LA.
The metrorail sucks, it has cost billions, it has taken years to build, it cuts through surface traffic, clogging it and goes underground like a subway in earthquake prone country...
It all makes sense right?...
Why would anyone install a modern monorail system that just needs a few pilons every few feet, grows at an exponential pace, does not distrupt traffic on the ground or during construction and costs a fraction of the cost?
Even Disneyland has been operating one for decades...
Beats me...

To be honest, having been a resident in both cities (London and Singapore) Singapore has far less landmarks. I'd prefer the Eye anyday. But who knows I haven't been to Singapore since the beginning of this millenium.

I was on it couple of months back. Yeah, it's slow. You don't feel any movement at all. Main difference with a ferris wheel is that 1) it is a lot more expensive and 2) you're locked in a capsule that doesn't rock to and fro. It also doesn't stop to let people get on or off - you match speed with it and walk onboard.
From the outside, it just looks like a giant bicycle wheel. Not very inspiring. The whole area is still under development, still a fair bit of construction going on.
To add to the list of touristy stuff to do in Singapore, there's also the tethered helium DHL balloon. [en.wikipedia.org]

@lpranal: If you read up on Dubai, what they're "compensating for" is the time if/when the oil starts drying up, and they have to start relying on other industries to power their economy. Tourism seems to be the one they're shooting for, and I'd have to say they seem to be doing a bang-up job of it. There's certainly a bunch of stuff there I'd like to see...

I live here. I saw it being gradually built piece-by-piece. Never been on it. Probably because it's kinda expensive. S$29.95 for a 30-minute view, S$69 with Alcohol with your flight (i.e. a special cocktail). You can also book one entire capsule for S$1500 (seats 28). I guess it's a once in a lifetime thing. Nothing much to see yet, it's good ol' Singapore Skyline.
The place around it has a Popeye's and couple other restaurants. It's also a good spot to catch the Formula One Night Race in September.

@MFlick:
Look, no one has a monopoly on these giant ferris wheels. It's simply just one city trying to outdo the next. "Biggest or Largest in the World" is only as good as until the next one gets built.
London Eye = 135m
Singapore Flyer = 165m
Beijing Great Wheel = 208m (opening 2009)

Mmmmm... Popeye's.

yeah, the current area around the wheel are mostly construction sites at the moment. the sea view isnt that good too, mostly cargo tankers and smog. give it another 3-4 years before the area is built up. as you can see, its mostly just trees

@da5id4vz: I live about 25 miles from the edge of London and I can see the Canary Wharf development on a clear day. That development is the other side of London.
So yes, I do expect visibility to be greater than a mile. Where do you live? Mexico City?
