Badkamer: Save Bathroom Space With Fixtures That Slide on Rails
Posted by Sean Fallon at 7:50 AM on June 25, 2008
In a dwelling where space saving is of the utmost importance, the Badkamer concept could make a tremendous difference in a small bathroom. Essentially, the design would allow users to slide their fixtures out of the way on an abacus-like rail system that doubles as plumbing. Only the toilet would have to remain stationary because of its need for larger pipes--the shower, sink, mirror and cabinets could all be re-configured on a whim. Apparently, the design is so efficent that it can turn a 6 1/2 sq ft space into a fully functioning bathroom. A truly ingenious design that will undoubtedly find its way into some cramped urban homes in the near future.

This would save me so much room in the second-story bathroom on the East wing of the house!

LOL, hey wait, that thing on the lower left is a toilet? A shower while you potty? Kind of strange.

it's possible i'm being narrow minded, but i've been in some small bathrooms and, well, never thought i wish i could slide this out of my way, but then again i've never been to japan.

Agreed...no idea how this saves space...a corner sink, head, and a shower closet would do the same thing, I would thing...
This idea makes me think whoever designed it has never had to remodel a bathroom either...

The more I look at this the less I like it.

Yeah if you have to have room for the rails then ...you have room for the fixtures. Maybe if you had a space that held all the elements and you only slid out what you needed, but with the sink and toilet being permanent, that kind of rules that out.

I like the idea. But I'm pretty sure the toilet needs a pipe to shoot your crap through after your finished with it.

@HeartBurnKid: Totally agree. How is anything as shown more compact because it slides?
The only thing I see is that the whole room would also be the shower area. But this is hardly a new idea.

@HeartBurnKid: "Also, WTF is that thing on the top rail?" -- A shower head?

Notice the complete lack of explanation of how the hell this stuff works. The sink and toilet are not shown to move, but the shower head has some sort of magical water supply that moves down the pipe with it.

@ibelli: Good thing the toilet doesn't move.
@HeartBurnKid: I think it's a showerhead. ^o_O^

Maybe I'm missing something, but how is having the fixtures on rails and slideable any more efficient than having them fixed in the positions we see in the first photo?
Also, WTF is that thing on the top rail?

A moving toilet is not a good idea. Repeat: NOT a good idea. Good for practical jokes, though.

Nice look, but so useless.... it's not like you want to move everything to the left so that you can play handball on the right side. or maybe to fit in small bed for that cousin that just came out of jail, they're used to the toilet next to their bed.

Saves space vs lame attempt at creativity then trying to show off it's uselessness rather than appearing in some art show....
I dunno, maybe a funny idea to have in a kids bathroom where you don't care if the kids injure themselves.

That guy has an amazing talent for picking names. He is a Dutch guy who figures that most of the people who will see his concept are English speaking, so he just picks the Dutch word for bathroom as the name of his project... lame.

I don't speak Dutch, so don't how that's pronounced. But I don't think I'd want to buy anything that may be called 'Badkarma'....

Cool idea except it doesn't actually save any space.
