Are You Going to Get the iPhone 3G?
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 6:10 AM on June 10, 2008

Giz camp is divided. Some here are going to get the new iPhone 3G because of the new speed, the GPS, and, hummm... ahh... new design? Whatever. Others will not get it. I belong to the latter camp. I was really expecting more storage, at least 32GB. Or 64GB. I would have been happy to pay for it. And what about a new camera? Anyway, since I can live a little longer without 3G, I'll wait for that. But what about you? Are you going to get the new iPhone 3G? Tell us in the comments.

Apple.au says: "UMTS/HSDPA (850, 1900, 2100 MHz)"
So - what does this mean for Vodafone & Optus, and their fancy new 900MHz 3G network? Telstra haven't confirmed yet. Different frequencies for AU maybe?

According to this highly scientific and accurate polling, currently 65% (or well over 1000) of Gizmodo readers will be purchasing the new iPhone. I am sure it is the new commercial that sold us all on this critical purchase.
I didn't see a voting option 'I would love to buy one, but I can barely afford to put petrol in the automobile'. That's me.

I'm out of contract and was looking for a new phone to get. My only criteria? WiFi. Was looking at the at&t tilt but that's $300 for a new one (150 refurbed) so $199 sounds like a steal.

I get Mac. Two laptops, a home network, and a half a dozen iPods are all Mac but the iPhone doesn't do it for me. A phone is a phone. I'll check email and surf the net at home. I want good sound quality, a device that is easy to carry & use, and an "all I can talk" plan.

I will be purchasing this version. The price point is very attractive with the current features. I just hope Apple does not throw early adopters under the bus again by releasing a 32gb model in less than three months of this debut.

I think apple dropped the ball by not letting people pre-order. I had my card out and ready to make the purchase, but now I might just go with the instinct and avoid at&t. the 16gb white one is not as cool seeing as the apple doesnt stick out as much, it looks more like the meizy version. The new plastic back also scares me a little, I knew the iphone was sturdy before but now its fragile...I dont know, but if you can unlock this one without an agreement apple will have my $300

For now, no iPhone 2.0 for me. I kind'a like the current silver, metallic, back of the current one. Plus, what else do I get besides 3G and GPS?
I would've happily have paid to upgrade had Apple bumped up the memory to 32 or 64 and if the new the new iPhone also offered some other hardware update, I don't know, like, Bluetooth 2.0, or whatever the one is that offers compatibility with more devices than just a wireless earphone. Would've been nice to see the Hackers figure out a way to control their PS3 with the new iPhone. Also, definitely, better camera, video conferencing, actual, turn-by-turn GPS, replaceable battery. A replaceable battery is good for those long field assignments where a wall outlet just isn't available.
So, why buy another iPhone when I can update my current 16gb v1.0 iPhone to the new firmware, wait for peeps to jailbreak it, and follow the same, dependable routine I've been following for close to a year now?
I might, finally, decide to drop some cash and get me a me.com account. Although, again, 100 bucks? Doesn't matter if that's like 10 Euros these days, 100 bucks is 100 bucks. I could use that to fill up my Jetta's fuel tank. So I might also hold off on that too.
Jesus, you guys forgot the "Meh, you guys are all fanboys" line in the poll above - grin.

Here's a logistical question. Why didn't Apple change the price of the Touch while the Apple Store was down. Who is going to purchase a device with half the features and the same storage capacity for $100 more?
While I agree that a 32GB iPhone would totally cannibalize the current Touch lineup, it almost seems imminent at the correct price point. I'm sure many people would agree that $399 for a 32GB iPhone would be more than attractive. It could all be had if Apple killed the 8GB Touch, dropped the price of the 16GB to $199 and dropped the price of the 32GB touch to $299. Seems like someone dropped the ball.

I'll probably get one eventually, but it depends on what the App store has available. My guess is that very few of the apps I use from Installer will have a counterpart(-port?) come July, so it will also depend on what is still compatible with the hacked Installer 2.0.
I'm not too pressed, though. The only thing I really want with the new phone is 3G.

I didnt want to pay more than $200 for a smartphone. Tada! 3g iphone!! One Please. I returned a 4gb mp3 player for $100. so $200 for a 8gb mp3 player tickles me pink. Not sure why everyone is all negative. They are coming out with more versions eventually, so if they add everything you ever wanted, full dslr camera, 1 terrabyte hard drive for your mp3's, gps, dish washer and solves world peace, it would be in development until sometime in the next 80 years. i think it will be another 5 years or so until we get a one stop shop: camera w/ flash, mp3 player, and full internet (enough to replace a laptop)

I was so psyched for WWDC and was really prepared to get an iPhone (did not last time around because I didn't think the specs were there yet. Got a iPod Touch instead.)
I have to say, unless there's something I am missing, the update feels kinda "meh" to me and I would say I am probably just as likely to get the Blackberry Bold instead. Note that it's not Apple's fault that the internets hyped this up to be something it turned out not to be, but I was frankly expecting a bit more.
Here's a tidbit for any Apple lurkers... had there been a web-based order/pre-order button, I would have done it! Credit card was out. But the apparent fact that this has to be purchased in a store (NFW am I standing in line for a phone) was a deal-killer to me.
I'm disappointed, but not because Apple did anything wrong, but because I think I was expecting something different.

I just put my 32GB iPod Touch up on Amazon.de.

Then I'll wait and use my trusty 'old' iPod Nano 2G till July 11th.
What really made me consider the new one is the GPS and the new headphone jack.
It might seem silly, but I'd like to use my UM2 with the iPhone.
Also Steve promised some improvements in audio quality. If I'm no mistaken this means improvements both in calling quality and sound quality while listening to music.
3G is nice, but China (that's where I'm going in a few months, for a few months) doesn't even have 3G. When back home this might prove really usefull, though. T-Mobile has the best 3G coverage around here, and even HSDPA in most cities, which means friggin fast internet.

I don't need more than 16GB storage (I mostly use my iPod on short trips or for workouts, so no need to have the whole season of Lost on there or anything). I surf the web and check my email regularly (and painfully) on my old Nokia. I work on a Mac, so syncing will be nice and seamless (compared to the Nokia), and the GPS will be a nice addition. My 2yr old Motorola E770 has a light, front facing/internal camera for video calling and can record to the internal RAM and SSD card while much less sophisticated cell-phones handle MMS.
The disappointing parts are the lack of MMS and video recording although this is a software feature and could be later with a firmware updating. Lack of a video camera facing the user eliminates video conferencing (and additional revenue from higher data usage) and without a flash, photographs are restricted to daylight or really, really rare occasions when you find a well light site at night.
Apples profit seems to come from revenue sharing, placing barriers between users and their ability to use a lot of data limits Apples potential profit and the user experience.
The parts that Apple did well, they did *very* well however the thoroughly annoying part is that basics like MMS were missed even though MMS is available in even a 5 year old cell-phone. This is Apples second attempt at a cell-phone, I can forgive them for their first effort.
Before I make the buy decision I'll wait for the NZ price of the "3G" iPhone as the Nokia N95 is USD 690 and is starting to look more competitive.

They should have confirmed this months ago. We were forced to make a decision and ended up going with a 3g phone manufacturer that actually communicates with their customers.

I have an iPhone and I will NOT be upgrading. To me, this was kind of a lack luster announcement.
I'll upgrade when they get to the next gen of communications devices -- like when they add video calls and VOIP support and stuff like that.
Right now, there's not much different in capability between my current iPhone and the one announced today.
I have to get some more time out of my initial investment. I guess it's time to buy that Applecare I've had my eye on (I'm already on my 4th replacement iPhone).

this iteration of the iphone is obviously not for people to upgrade to (except for the diehards) as much as it is to get more people on the bandwagon...the price reduction is the biggest clue to that.
still, we should call this a win and look to future updates for A2DP, copy and paste, etc.

i considered this phone even though I'm not on ATT. but then i thought... why buy it? it wont take long before apple comes up with a 32gig then few months later an 80 gig. then by this time next year a whole new phone with a gazillion new features you dont have on this new one. apple's known to do this crap, upgrade their product before the customer can fully enjoy their current models. and its irritating. so fuck it. ill wait for an android os equipped device or just get me a blackberry, cant go wrong with that.

Once the apps arrive, I don't think I'll care about lacking 3g. All the other benefits are the type of incremental changes that always leave me approximately two years behind every OSX upgrade. So until there's a really sizable storage bump and a better camera: no.
I'm also about at the threshold of what I'm willing to pay a month for a phone. 10$ more x 200$ for a whole new phone is enough to make me say "no thanks."

Couple of comments/questions. My company offers a PDA purchase plan. I'm limited to WinMo devices because of a retarded decision by management. I might be interested in the iPhone, but not eager if I could just get a blackberry pearl or whatever. But the iPhone just seems head and shoulders above any WinMo phone out right now...especially for AT&T. It might not be more practical than a blackberry, but it is definitely cooler and gadgety-er. No SDK on BBs. That being said, I'm very interested to know if you still HAVE to have a special iPhone data plan through AT&T. I can take the SIM and slam it into other non-BB AT&T phones to get data and voice. Can you even access the SIM on an iPhone?

I was planning to get one, but is going to be carried by Claro in my country (Chile), and they do some really shady practices (Like sending repo mans for paying the bill 3 hours late or cutting off the service "because they felt like it"). Maybe if is released by Telefónica or Vodafone, but not right now.
And let me tell you. I work in an Apple reseller and the faces after WWDC were of pure and absolute anger.

I was really, really hoping for a 32GB model. 32GB is big enough to hold all the content I want to carry. 16 is not. I would gladly pay more, but I suspect that it's an issue of not enough room on the boards for extra memory chips, and no higher-density chips within the price range. So, we'll see. I may wait a bit and see how other folks' experiences are, especially with telephone reception and call quality. On the software side, there's a lot to like (that I'll get with my existing phone anyway), but I'm deeply disappointed that there's still no copy & paste. Lame. Lame. Lame.

Which may be a blessing in disguise. After all, it means that I can take my iPhone 1.0, easily SIM free it and use it in my destination country while I'm there, maybe even get away with selling it to a local not-a-chump change (it's one of the few countries in the Americas that will NOT get an iPhone 3G), and upgrade to the 3G when I get back.
Heck, if I'm really lucky, there would be an iPhone 3.1G by then (highly doubtful).

The launch corresponds almost exactly with the 3g rollout in my city.
That, combined with the AT&T subsidy that put the phone down in my "what I would actually spend for a cellphone" range were real winners for me.
However, the more I read about the change in prices for data/voice/sms plans for the phone, the more hesitant I become about actually buying one.
Hell, If it's going to use the same priced plans as every other phone, why not buy an AT&T Tilt plus an 8gig microSD card and still save yourself $60 in the process?

Does anyone else suspect that the not allowing "in-store only purchases" combined with the new 10 minute activation (compared to the 1 minute purchase of the first iphone) might well be a cheap ploy to get local news coverage of the "huge lines" of people trying to get one of these when they first come out? Artificial Bottlenecks on supply seem to be a GREAT way for companies to get lots of free publicity that makes it seem like *everyone* simply must have some hot new product.
I mean, I get that, since the original iphone got unlocked so easily, they want a better way to *force* people into using AT&T -- but surely you could sign the contract online and activate it online. I mean, you already put your credit card number in anyways -- how hard is it to force you to set up service when you place your order (or even do it over the phone for that matter).
I just can't imagine why they'd want to do this this way otherwise. If you have a 100 person line, and each activation takes 10 minutes, you're looking at 1000 minutes or about 13 hours. Even if you had 3-4 employees able to do activations at once per store, that's still 3-4 hour wait to go in and buy your phone.

I'm to lazy to do the math, but I'm wondering if the $399 8GB 2.5G costs the same as the $199 3G with the different rate plans/restrictions.
ten more a month x 24 months = $240 more 240 + 199 = 439
so, you pay $40 more to get 3G.
I am not in a position to care about the lack of carrier choices, where I live, AT&T was the best option and T-Mobile doesn't exist. I don't see the value in the upgrade at this point. with the promise of the 2.0 software available on mine I'm good for now.

I'm not going to get the phone simply for the huge let down that Steve Jobs has created for countless iPhone lovers. The fact that the only 2 BIG upgrades for this phone were 3G and GPS tracking is an embarassment. Where's the MMS capability? Where's the upgraded camera? Where's the video recording? Why is it thicker than the orignal? Some of you say that some of these features are to much to be expected so soon but that fact that you cant take a picture and send to someone else in an MMS which is technology that has been available for years now is just ignorant. I for one will not be buying it. Oh and sence my phone is Jailbroken i can allready do more on mine than is possible on the 3G version.

@sergio_e: Seriously you say? Well check the N96 specs here:
[gizmodo.com]
It beats the hell out of just about any phone ever invented.
some of the iphone-beating features (I'm not gonnna get into every difference):
16GB internal storage
SD slot for storage expansion
5MP camera with carl zeiss lens and flash
video capture at 30fps, with a light for night filming
better web standards support than the iphone
Of course it has all the other stuff you'd expect, like A-GPS, playback of various audio and video standards, blah blah blah.
The downside is it's gonna be massively expensive if, as with the unlocked N95, Nokia doesn't partner with a carrier who will subsidize it. Also, like the N95 before it, we will probably have to wait a few months for the version with USA 3G support (the N95 had Euro 3G before getting US 3G -- this will probably be the same).
I'd think to anyone tech-oriented enough to be reading Gizmodo, the iphone's stylishness factor (brand recognition to get you social acceptance -- you're cool now) is not compelling reason to choose it over the device with more features. The iphone may be simpler to use (maybe the N96 will be simple too), but again that shouldn't sway techies though it is nice when things are easy. Price is about the only obstacle. At the time the N95 came out, it's pricing was competitive with the iphone, but this time it remains to be seen.

final verdict: if i can pull another $30 out of my ass every month from now on (for a full time high school student who makes less than $50 most weeks, and is saving up for an iMac and car insurance, $30 isn't easy to come by every month, and daddy's money is never going towards add-ons to my bill, even if my life were to depend on it), then it's a bargain i can't turn down. or make that $40 a month because kids in my school are dirtbags and i'd need phone insurance if i were to get the second coming of the jesusPhone. but it will be well worth it in the end...16GB black, please?

I can't stand AT&T, so I don't know how I'll be getting the new iPhone. Apparently you can't buy one without a 2-year contract from AT&T. At least that's what I read here:
All I'm worried about is how long it's going to take before I can buy it and use it with T-Mobile.

@GeekyNerdGuy: Actually he really does live in a very secluded part of nature, so his image as a rough and rugged man is all true..he has the facial hair and the grunt to prove it!
@Zlevee: Yeah we did! haha.
Anyways to the question, Yes! I will be getting the iPhone next month with Nutbastard AS IVE SAID ALREADY jesus people, LISTEN. :)
We'll be getting the 16GB but I think I want mine in white...I don't know what Nut wants dammit it's my birthday gift to him and he can cry if he wants to!

OK, so I counted 12 things you didn't like but made excuses for so you could say you liked it. There is a phrase coined by a colleague - BOOBS - Believing Our Own BS. That is the scenario when you know something is bad but you feel so dedicated that you "put lipstick on the pig". Heck, your nav didn't even work but you made an excuse that it was your fault. No wonder you recognize Vista when you see it.
I just hope you are as forgiving in your comments when you see the Instinct. It has real nav, is on a real Rev A network that has real coverage. It even has real live TV. Oops, does the iPhone have live TV?
Cheers

What I really want is an iTouch mp3 player...but they're expensive...the iPhone is alot cheaper...can I buy an iPhone and only use it as an mp3 player? Can I buy one and not activate the phone service?

Being a college student its too expensive to switch to the iphone, even with the price cut. $200 for the new iphone, $$$ to break my contract with alltel, $$$ for a new AT&T contract. Too much for me. But I intend to make the switch at some point regardless, just not now. Besides, who wants to fight and claw for one in the first months?

I've got a first gen iPhone so I'll wait till Christmas time or early next year to get a new one. $300 for 16GB in white sounds good to me.

The storage is the killer for me. I'd be first in line on July 11th if it was upwards of 32GB. Right now it looks like i'm going to pass on this one just as i did the first iPhone. Come on Apple!

@SkoGoody: There is copy and paste...
I am most defiantly getting the iphone. I've been needing to upgrade my phone and mp3 player, so this came just in time. Plus I am directionally handicapped so GPS will be a plus.

I'm going to stay put with my current iPhone as well. There is no compelling reason for me to fork over more $$ for the 3G plus pay more a month for the data / SMS plan. EDGE coverage and speed in San Diego is quite adequate. I use Wi-Fi every chance I get, anyway. I'm on the Beta team for the iPhone 2.0 software so I already see the greatness in full-on Exchange service, and soon everyone who needs ActiveSync with Exchange will benefit as well, when the software goes Golden and is distributed for free for all iPhone users.
I stood in line at 6:00 in the morning to get iPhone ver.1 last year. I had the money, couldn't wait to get it, and have used the device every day since dozens of time. Launch Day was an extraordinary experience, I got on the local news, and the staff at the Apple stores were pumped beyond belief - the whole thing was a major blast, and everyone, customers and workers, were grinning and yelling and doing high-fives...Apple supplied us in line with water - three times - throughout the day. That attention, and the carnival-like atmosphere alone, was worth the price of the iPhone, and it is, truly, a wonderful device - which made the price even more attractive. (I got the cheaper 4GB iPhone, then received the $100.00 rebate months later.)
iPhone ver.2 isn't so much that as iPhone 3G ver.1. I've got another year to go on my contract with AT&T. I would expect that by this time next year, iPhone 3G ver.2 will be even more "lickable" than what Apple came out with this past week. So why jump on it now? For one of the few times in my life, I'm not rushing out to buy the latest and greatest from one of my favorite companies - so, see ya next year, Apple. I'm quite happy for now - with the phone, AND the data plan. : )

I'm going for the C905, or whatever the new Sony 8 Mpx camera phone is going to be called.
2 Mpx camera with fixed focus and no flash doesn't do it for me.
O yeah, and there is no stereo bluetooth either. What's up with that?
