Apple WWDC Liveblog: Monday June 9 Tuesday June 10 at 3am
Posted by Jason Chen at 9:00 AM on June 5, 2008
Apple's WWDC event is only a couple days away, but if you want to know whether you should take the afternoon off on Monday in order to wait in line for a 3G iPhone, you're going to want to read our liveblog. The official event starts at 10 AM Pacific (1PM Eastern) (AU: or 3am AEST) but we'll be lining up early like we always do, giving live updates of the sweaty journalists and even sweatier developers. Will the 3G iPhone really make an appearance? How about Snow Leopard? Find out next Monday.
AU: We're going to be running the US liveblog LIVE on our site at 3am next Tuesday morning (Monday night). If you're slightly crazy, an insomiac or an Apple fanboy, make sure you stay up late to check it out. Please? I don't want to get up that early for nothing...

Hi Nick - given the plethora of websites that will be covering the event live (Mac Rumors, Giz US, Engadget, etc), it might be a better use of your time to wake up at 6am and summarise the Australian perspective on the keynote. I'm not sure that many Aussies will be up at 3am, and for those that are, the live information is the live information is the live information (speed of reporting is probably more important than who is actually reporting it).
But hey, if you're gonna be up anyway...

all of a sudden my iPod touch can find it's location using wi-fi, seems like telstra has switched on this function in anticipation of the 3g iPhone, does this mean that the iPhone will not have gps? The wifi location finder is also bloody accurate +- 20m

For the past few events I have been saying I will just get up at 6am and look over what happened, and for the last few events, I have been up at 3am watching what has been released... Will WWDC 2008 be different? Watch this space!

****OKAY all anti-Apple people PLEASE read****
The WWDC in on Monday, there are going to be a slew of Apple posts *everywhere* tech/news related.
Before CES they had a slew of CES posts.
There are 2 big Apple events a year, MacWorld in January and the WWDC in June. CNBC, Google news, CNN, FoxNews, WSJ, other tech blogs etc everyone is talking about it.
Please, just lay off, everyone is into it. Its like talking about Hillary and Obama right before Obama became the democratic candidate (or even now)on any news site. You just have to understand that it is going to be everywhere all the time for the next week or so.

I always said that OSX Lion will be the last OS for Mac 10.9, I don't think they would put a bigger cat than that, plus we're still on 10.5.3 , we still have 6 updates to go. They usually start talking about the new OS once it gets to 10.5.8. I would be really surprised if they talk about another OS this early, Leopard just came not too long ago. I have a feeling it's the iphone 2.0 that was rumored for so long. I remembered there was an insider that used to leak their plans before, but I think Apple handled that already. I know they will talk about the regular iphone's update release, they will spend a few minutes on that. So I say maybe the 3g iphone 2.0 (biggest bet), apple tablet(would be cool), apple plasma that was rumored last year(who knows) or 40" apple display, they did patterned the solar iphone so maybe they already did it. A 3g solar iphone? Well, let's see...

I'm really hoping that they announce that current iPhone owners can "trade-in" their current phones for a v.2 at a reduced price (or it's real cheap from the start). The AT&T data/phone plan would also have to stay the same (or get cheaper). Not that it makes too much difference to me. I like my phone, and I can wait out the remaining year and a half with it. I'm also looking forward to increased capability in my current gen iPhone, like A2DP!!! If iPhone and iPhone 2 don't have A2DP, it will put a sour taste in my mouth for Apple products for a really long time (yea BB 9000/Bold!!!)

First of all, I run a neighboring site www.macblogz.com and we simply cannot get to WWDC. Yes, we're in Portland so we're close, but it's just not exactly within our immediate budget. Anyways, we're going to be live-blogging 3 Apple stores in Portland, however without our devoted Gizmodo, it would be near impossible !!!

@PDSM: They´ve already done that, because for the last month iPhone has been unavailable in most of the stores. Seems that 2nd quarter will be very profitable por uncle Jobs...

Posted 9:33 AM 6/6/08
@justinpe: I understand the whole hits/adverts/revenue thing but that doesn't change the fact that the Apple coverage is very often excessive. Ok, it's not as bad as Engadget has been at times, when every pointless story about the iPhone appeared not only in their Mobile section but on the main site as well, but it is still grossly skewed (IMO).
And given the ever-present number of complaints about the level of Apple coverage, maybe your point about 'giving readers what they want' isn't correct.
I don't, for the record, hate Apple. I don't love them either, of that I make no bones but I do still take an interest in what they release because sometimes, occasionally I quite like their products and might want to buy one.
But just because I don't spend my life drooling over everything that comes out of Cupertino, that doesn't mean that I don't want to read Gizmodo - when not metaphorically trying to probe Mr Jobs' prostate with their tongues (no offence intended to any of the staff, that's just how it seems sometimes), the reporting is pretty damned good. They cover a wide selection of tech-related news, the writing is funny and intelligent and the comments are good for a laugh.
So, I'm afraid my response to your comment that I just shouldn't visit the site is one of incredulity; Gizmodo isn't an exclusively-Apple site, no matter how it may seem at times, so even Apple-haters have every right to visit.
Yes, the obvious response to that is one along the lines of your 'don't click the link' point but given this is an article saying there is going to be another article about whatever Steve says on Monday, I don't think I'm entirely unjustified in expressing my opinion that less, in this case, would be more.
I'm not saying Giz should stop covering Apple-related news, far from it. I just think it'd be nice if it weren't afforded such zealous over-importance.

Why has anyone failed to remember the Blu-Ray MacBook Pro?! :D I know it's wishful thinking, but one can hope!
Personal wish list for WWDC:
- 3G GPS Bluetooth iPhone with video camera, infrared preferred but not necessary (Yeah, I know the draws, still want it)
- Blu-Ray MBP as above, preferrably with an update that enables 15" MBPs to have the same screen resolution as the 17" models (unnecessary, but I'd want it)
- Updates to the MBP and MB case would be nice, but not needed
- A much improved MB Air
- others as mentioned above

@Brian Lam: like I say, I'm not completely opposed to Giz running Apple stories, I just think they get maybe a little more coverage than is warranted.
But, at the end of the day, you and the writers are human, you're bound to focus more on the products that grab you/get you excited and, to be honest, no matter what my views are I can't really criticise you for that - sure, I might prefer things to be a different way but they aren't, so I just have to like it or lump it.
On a separate note, I am I must admit, probably the most interested in what His Steveness has to say that I have ever been - the iPhone was cool but incomplete, so a 3G iPhone really would be brilliant.
Even if it has GPS ;)

@Brian Lam: Hopefully, I can lend some insight into what point Apple content becomes excessive and annoying. And, I'll go one better and provide what I feel would be a reasonable solution.
@Brian Lam: @Step666: I share many of Step666's sentiments. Do I read a majority of the Apple related posts? Certainly. Am I sometimes annoyed by the volume and/or quality of the Apple related content? Yes. Is excluding Apple content a reasonable solution? For those who wish to not receive any Apple content, it is. But, it is not an acceptable solution for those who merely wish to decrease the volume of Apple content without eliminating it entirely.
For me, the point at which Apple content becomes "annoying" is when the volume of content impedes my ability to separate it from other content, or my ability to locate other content, which is often as interesting to me as the Apple content. Incidentally, this effect is not limited to Apple content.
There have been times when the content on Gizmodo degenerates to a series of posts drooling over Apple's latest or upcoming followed by a series of posts talking about using an Apple branded screen cleaning cloth to wipe up the spittle. Similarly, there are times when the content becomes an endless stream of cellphone coverage or camera coverage.
My suggestion, and I assume that it's been examined by your staff before, is to provide the user with some means to have some more control over the content as it is presented to them. Something as simple as providing "digested" content, or allowing a reader to limit the number of posts containing particular tags presented to them would appease many readers. If thoughtfully implemented, such improvements could allow Gizmodo to grow as an online community, and also provide additional opportunities for editorial control of not only content but advertising as well.
Must go now, tornado time.

No, I disagree. You may see some people gripe here in the comments, but I know at least a dozen Apple gadget nuts who regularly read Gizmodo but would never post. Face it, people like hearing about what Apple's doing, even the haters. The excessive coverage extends to nearly everything - after all, they do generate several posts an hour and something's got to go there - imagine the amount of times you've seen the ASUS in the last few months.

I would agree that Apple coverage on here is sometimes excessive. I love Apple products, but I don't read every Apple post as some are a waste of my time. I typically click on the links that interest me, and avoid the ones that don't. That is all.
I guess I'm just confused by the people who feel compelled to read and comment on posts that they aren't interested in. Whining in the comments does nothing to solve the problem and actually makes it worse in some ways (more hits/comments on stories they feel don't deserve a place in Giz's posts).

@Step666:
You could certainly write Giz an email and let them know how you feel. But judging by the number of hits and comments on Apple related posts, it seems that both Apple haters and fanboys are equally attracted to the posts which creates a hostile environment at times. Even on the posts that lack substance.
When I see a story on Giz that I am uninterested in, I simply do not read it or comment on it. But I would agree that if I were totally uninterested in Apple products, weeks like this one would get annoying pretty quickly. I would probably go to a different site if I were them.
I agree that the accommodations made by Giz for non-Apple obsessed fans is a good compromise. I will be eager to see how many people actually use the non-apple version. I mean, c'mon, even if you hate Apple, you have to be somewhat interested in what Steve is gonna say on Monday.

I've moved to a zen space; I'm taking the wait and see attitude. I looked at the "leaked" photos and truly hope that THEY are fake, because if they aren't, compared to the original, they look like cheap knock offs like any other cell phone. THIS IS NOT MY APPLE IPHONE!
So you see, to keep control and centered so I don't loose it completely; I'm taking deep breaths and being as patient as I can; and praying that the "NEW" iPhone is still as classy as the original!
