Apple Patents Cheapie iPod Classic Touchscreens
Posted by Mark Wilson at 5:30 AM on June 20, 2008
When Apple releases a new generation of iPod, it's smaller, but Apple aims to keep profit margins in check too. A new patent points to Apple possibly developing a lower-cost touchscreen for the iPod classic. Instead of utilising thick glass panels, the design takes advantage of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic. We see this PET in the iPhone/iPod touch already, so the transition would probably be a positive one despite the use of, ick, more plastic. [Patent via MacNN]

Come on Giz, don't give us that crap, what an absurd point of view this is. The only positive aspect of the equation is Apple deepening their pockets, and in the way, screwing its customers by downgrading a product.

@Kaiser-Machead: this is a technology patent, not a design patent. The diagram indicating a wheel is completely irrelevant to the technology patent they're pursuing. So people should not interpret this as a patent designed to be used in iPod Classic models just because the picture looks like that. My guess is that all iPods will be touchscreen in the near future, because it's pretty clear (as you said) that there's no reason to have a wheel when the screen does the same thing.

I sure hope this patent doesn't manifest itself into an actual product. What's the point of a clickwheel if it has a touch screen? Choice is fine and all, but this sounds like a convoluted design with no point to it whatsoever. Also, IF they're going to do this, it had better have the power to run the interface better than the first run of Classics.

In other news, the apple care plan for Ipods will soon be raised $60 a year. Apple is like the shocker, they slip one in the pink and when your not looking 2 in the stink.

Don't tell me I'll have to get a new iPod already, I've barely spent any time with this first one.

Does the fact that every 3 to 5 articles on this site are about apple products or the iphone have anything to do with the main advertiser being apple, or is the main advertiser apple because so many articles are about apple products?

@praevalesco: Unless you turn your hand upside down, you can't have "one in the pink and two in the stink." A little confused with female anatomy, are we?

@Soulxside: Orr Does the fact that you're still reading Gizmodo mean that you don't care that much.
I don't see why people complain and still read Gizmodo. Apple is a company who make stuff that people like, or find interesting. Hell even other companies are on the iPhone/iPod/Apple craze. So it's really not anyone on the Giz's fault.
I BLAME IT ON THE LIBERAL MEDIA!

"When Apple releases a new generation of iPod, it's smaller, but Apple aims to keep profit margins in check too. "
That doesn't make much sense. The size of the device is completely unrelated to the company's profit margins. Actually, more often than not, it costs more money to make smaller components.

@Carmen loves her NB: It was a question, not a complaint... "Orr" are you so insecure about your blind cult-like devotion to Apple that you assume any mention of the company not followed by shovel loads of praise is a complaint that requires your vigilant attention?
To answer your question - I like this site and that's why I read it. It's true I would prefer less information about Apple products since I have little to no interest in them, but only to make room for articles about the stuff I care about. If you're such an Apple enthusiast, I think there are already plenty of sites devoted to such information. I'm not the only person who frequents Giz that would like to see a little less Apple.

@theogcasey: Make devil horns. Raise your ring finger while still holding down your ring finger. "One in the pink, two in the stink. Its the shooooooocker!" (sung to the tune of Judas Priest's "The Ripper")
I hope they don't update anything too quickly, I just the 160gb classic last week which is all sorts of awesome. I waited until I heard the firmware updates made it usable. The amount of space to truly put my full music collection on it is quite luxurious. Full Mercury Rev and King Diamond collection's FTW!

@Soulxside: Apple is a company that makes gadgets, therefore their products appear on a gadget blog. The opinion that Apple's technology is better than other companies', is just that, an opinion. They do happen to be making a whole lot more products than most companies, imho. Get over it, Soulxside.

I come to Gizmo to get my new tech fix. If there are Apple stories then so much the better. Don't like it then don't read the Apple posts. Is that too hard to handle?

@Carmen loves her NB: The problem is Carmen is that he is jealous that nothing he likes ever gets any attention. I am an Apple IT Technician but by no means a 'Fanboi' but I come here for tech news and the main tech news i care about is Apple tech news. These are the kind of guys that have nothing better to do than complain... for christ's sake they can use the Apple free feed, but then they will have nothing to complain about.

Everyone accuses Engadget of being paid off by Apple as well. The fact is that right now Apple is directly appealing to gadget geeks with some cool products, so of course you're going to hear about it. Just don't frigging read the article, it's not that hard! When/if Microsoft Surface hits mainstream distribution I'm sure you're going to hear a buttload about that, but right now Apple's doing the cool touchscreen gadget thing.
