AOL Blesses Windows Mobile With New AIM Client
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 1:40 AM on June 24, 2008
After years of neglect, AOL has apparently remembered that Windows Mobile exists and just released a new official AIM client. Though still in beta, it's supposedly compatible with all WinMo 5 and 6 devices. It looks pretty swank, at least as far as WinMo apps go, and more than satisfying for a mobile AIM client. Hopefully this means they're cooking up one for the iPhone too. [AOL via XDA Developers via BGR]

@KaosDG: Agile was way too glitchy when I tried it. Palringo's the best at the moment.
I'd be tempted to grab this official client, but I'd hate having to run a separate app for yahoo and google friends.

@Git Em SteveDave has a crush on the Swedes: Why the hell would you want AIM, when iChat, Adium and so forth work just fine? I'm an Adium person myself, and I'll probably never go back to iChat.
But, IF you're really looking for something from AOL directly, AOL's UB application is actually very light on the resources when it's running, so you can just close the web browser window and you have your AIM. I don't see much difference.

Interesting...
I was looking for something a while back officially from AOL, but alas nothing existed (that worked...)
I used to use Agile Messenger (pay software but worth it) but as often as I flash my phone it sucked (had to keep e-mailing support for new activation, since it's tied to the OS i suppose)
I switched to Palringo, which is free and pretty good too.

@christophski: I have been without my AIM since i went Windows Mobile 5 from my PPC that ran AOL's old mobile client. And YES people still use AIM! I normally use Digsby but while i am mobile my IM's are txt'ed to me and i can reply to them.
I WOULD LOVE A BETTER SOLUTION!
@marm0lade: Funny I thought the same exact thing.

OHHHHHHH. SOOO CLOSE. They almost went a complete article about windows mobile without cramming the iphone in their somewhere. Made it to the last sentence this time too! Lame.

BTW... they already demoed an AIM iPhone client when they unveiled the iPhone SDK. They were one of the companies that were given 2 weeks to develop an iPhone app under the watchful eye of Apple.

Maybe I missed something but I don't remember iChat being a iPhone 2.0 feature

@bms: I was wondering if AOL still existed too. I mean I haven't gotten any 1000 free hours of internet CD's lately.

Wow, this is just perfect timing for me, I was just re-downloading everything for my phone and backing up everything for it so that I can flash my tilt with a different hacked ROM for the first time. (I'm a little afraid that I'll brick my phone, as I've never installed a ROM that wasn't official.)

It's one of those all in one IM apps and it'll handle almost any account you want to throw at it.

...and by blesses, of course, we mean "curses." And by Windows Mobile, of course, we mean "sucky, slow, overly-convoluted POS mobile operating system that serves mainly to make the iPhone look better by comparison."

Can someone explain to me why an AIM application for the iPhone would be so desirable if there is an iChat application (which allows access to your AIM account) coming with iPhone 2.0? Seriously. Maybe I am missing something.

I thought AOL went out of business...I guess I got distracted by all their layoffs.

Finally! After WinMo switched the orientation of having the menus at the bottom the other version just wouldn't work (v2003)? Lazy AIM.

@behavin: @Kaiser-Machead's Chips Ahoy!: I like AIM for it's logging and alert capabilities, which most other apps are missing combined. They will have one, but not the other. I will check this out though.

Very nice looking app! Not slow for me at all, and has some great animations - you can barely tell it's made by AOL.

Now all we need is Yahoo to follow suit. I hate having to pay for free software for a smart phone (i.e. chat, slingbox, descent internet browsing...)

I wonder how this compares to WLM Mobile.
I really hate AIM. I'm the kinda person that wants it all, and AIM doesn't have many features by default. Plus it comes with the typical AOL spyware.
I'll give credit that it does include good tabbed browsing though, and is lightweight enough.
