An Easy Guide to Wii Homebrew
Posted by Jason Chen at 8:20 AM on June 25, 2008
The will she/won't she back and forth of the Wii Homebrew scene lately probably has a bunch of you, even if you're a veteran, confused. WiiHD has a good walkthrough teaching you how to get Homebrew onto your Wii, if only for the privilege of playing Quake and various other games. Piracy, on the other hand, isn't covered by this guide, so you'll have to look elsewhere. [WiiHD]

@CutePuppyz: Out of curiosity, why don't you have Zelda?

You need to have a copy of Zelda: TP in order to even get the hack working. That I don't have and therefore can't get this goodness going...
Maybe someone will be able to get HB to boot off just the SD card by some super awesome exploit ala PSP Custom Firmware scene or PS2 Memor 32 firmware....

I thought the most recent Wii system update patched the hole that Zelda exploits?

@youbastid: The hackers always win. ALWAYS. They found a way to write code to basically "ignore" Nintendo's newest firmware code...
@dry-roasted-peanuts: That's $50...I need right now...penny pinching...

@T16skyhopp: Wait, so is there a way to use the exploit to play backups now? If so Nintendo is screwed.

@TKWarrior: No you cannot play backups with the Homebrew Channel. It provides an easy-to-use interface for running .dol (gamecube) and .elf (wii) "executables". Most of the homebrew software (emulators, quake, etc) can be ran with this.
Basically there are several means of installing the HBC (homebrew channel). For an unmodded, pre v3.3 firmware Wii you can use the Twilight Princess exploit. For unmodded, v3.3 firmware I believe there is a new TWP hack (0.1 beta). For a modded wii, its super easy - someone has even made an ISO - just burn it to a disc and run it like a normal game and ba-boom Homebrew channel!
Once its installed, it stays. In other words, if you hade the HBC installed prior to v3.3, the firmware update did not break/remove it. Of course the firmware is about 3 months behind "the scene" and the HBC was released within that 3 month period.
Unfortunately, the HBC also makes it easy to install WADs which are the downloaded games and pretty easy to find around the 'net. This is what is going to make Nintendo take big-time drastic action and try to break the HBC.

sorry dudes last time i checked the last firmware update crippled the zelda homebrew, there is another way though.
besides there is nothing really exciting with homebrew, unless you want to run old ass games like pong, or convince your friends you have a faux ps3

@B1663R: Try playing Quake 1 with the wiimote + nunchuck combo, it breath life to the game, really
There's even people working on porting several more FPS to the Wii, but truly Quake on Wii is awesome!!! And when the multiplayer function is working, man, what is brawl???

@B1663R - The Zelda exploit has already been fixed and it works again.

@CutePuppyz: It looks like there's not too much interest in hacking the Wii's firmware as long as they can keep the Twilight Hack working. Your best bet is to just buy or rent Twilight Princess.

@HeartBurnKid: I know it blows. But I actually want to check TP out...maybe someone wants to lend me a copy and I'll send it back? Haha
