Aftermarket Xbox 360 Case Reduces Noise, Heat and Design
Posted by Sean Fallon at 9:20 AM on June 25, 2008
If the Xbox 360 is simply too loud, hot and small for your taste, the Lian-Li PC-XB01 case mod can help. The case can silence the disc drive with sound-proofing foam and keep things cool with improved airflow, a single 120mm fan or optional water cooling system. Plus, it is four times the size of the 360--so you know it will take up that extra space you have been meaning to fill. A price point has not been made available, but we do know that you can get your hands on this hulking beast sometime this August. [Lian-Li via Xbox Scene via Hack a Day via Boing Boing Gadgets]

What are you going to do with all the towels you wont be needing?

Why are people always saying the 360 is loud?? Are you playing in a library with the volume on 1? I've got an intercooler on mine and sit about 6 feet from the console and can't hear a thing.
Sometimes I think some people aren't happy if they can't complain about something.

Would match nicely with my Lian Li PC-A05 right next to me, if I had an Xbox. Lian Li really makes some nice computer cases, looks like they translated the quality pretty well.

Would be nice if there were a way to incorporate the HD-DVD drive (What? What? I still got mine. How else am I gonna watch "Accepted"?) into the case.

i have no idea about the size, but if it is a normal PC case then it's not worth it
cause it will lose the compact effect
oh wait that's their intension
if you don't care about size and warranty period is over then i say go for it
it is cooler and it reduces noise :D

@conception:Everyone who buys a 360 has a one year warranty though, so that warranty would be void.

@trickstyle2: The warranty period on the 360, even with the extended, for a lot (most?) is over or nearly so anyway.

It is like a luxurious spa for your 360! I'll take one if the price is right.

But does it still have the correctly configured LEDs for the red ring of death? How else will I know when my system craps out again? Bad form, Lian-Li. Bad form.

I have to say, I'd be tempted if it does a GREAT job of killing the noise. It would have to be very very quiet to make me think about spending the money, but I'd think about it. Just goes to show MS could make some more money kicking out a 360-doesn't-sound-like-a-jet edition

It's a shame they couldn't integrate their own PSU. The brick on the 360 is a PITA.

@Roger Huston: Yes, it looks just like a PS3. Except for the part where the PS3 doesn't look anything like this at all. You know, with the glossy finish, multicard reader, chromed raised-relief lettering, curved shell, and slot drive.
Other than that, it looks just like a PS3.

@conception: Even my launch console has another 3 months on its warranty, and there aren't (relatively speaking) many of those left. Most people have at least a year left on the portion of the warranty that covers the RRoD.
That said, once my warranty is up, I may very well get this for my 360.

ok the 360 is kinda loud but drown it out by turning it up or whatever...
second the 360 wont overheat as long as you dont shove it in a cabinet and dont plug it into a surge/power strip. the big brick on the cord is a surge/power supply and when u plug it into a strip it screws with it by not giving the thing enough power making the fans suffer. I have an 360 and the three times it red ringed was the times i plugged it into a strip. never sent it back just let it cool.
Try it and see if thats the problem.

@CutePuppyz: Stole my comment!
It's a good attempt, but I'd have liked to have seem more variation in the colour of the thing, like maybe steel side panels, aluminium weave thing... or white acrylic sides, with an extremely subtle green LED circle somewhere.

Interesting. There are a lot of Xbox modders out there who have already voided their warranty and modded their boxes for the pirate scene, I'm sure they would be all over this. Don't look at me like that, I'm just saying is all...

Reduce noise? So the tower comes with a completely different DVD-drive than the 360?
Everybody knows that 90% of the noise comes from the DVD-drive (whirring and not vibration) right? I bought a 360 from a friend of mine who had gotten the DVD firmware modded to only spin at 5x instead of 12x and it's just as "silent" playing games from discs now as being on the dashboard or playing a demo.
Now, if I were to get this tower for my 360 I'm sure it'd be pretty heavenly but on a stock 360 I don't imagine there would be much of a difference, not even close to the silence of my PS3 anyways :)

Well it is cool and the xbox is small so 4times the xbox would be like a CRT monitor size right without the huge back.
I'd rather give up space and be addicted than be addicted have my system get messed up and then have to wait 2 weeks to get another one nd be craving it.
{-i dont have a 360 because i dont see the point in getting a 360-)

This the perfect combo for those who retarded enough to by a 360 in the first place. You have to get a giant computer chasis to get the thing to quiet and cool. So now there would only be a 93% chance of it taking a dump on you. Awsome.

Now I have both systems but just need an update...
Not to have everyone freak out and call me a PS3 Fanboy or anything but where does this put the "360 is Cheaper, PS3 is too much" argument at? So now that you have to buy this too to make up for the RROD, and maybe even a Blu-Ray player in the future.(I doubt it and don't care) To have both systems reliable and full of features...how much does each one cost?
Let's see...
XBOX 360 $280-$450
HD-DVD(oops!) $199(ugh...thank god I never bought that!)
Online Service $50/year
PS3 $399-$499
Blu-Ray included
Online Service free
Ok...I'm gonna leave games up to all you fanboys cuz I personally like a variety of games on each system.
So the 360 can cost from...
$280 + $50/year(for online) to $549 + $50/year
$330 to $600 and don't forget to add whatever the price of this computer case is to those prices...so let's say it's $100
The 360 is between $430-$700 + $50/year
The PS3 is between $399-$499
Wow...how the tables have turned.

Oh yeah...two more valid points on the wireless adapter and HDD.
The entire live vs. psn thing always confused me. I'm sure there's something I'm missing but there are only two things that I've ever noticed that I wish the PS3 had. That's in game messaging and chat and in game user soundtracks. But that's nothing that skype and a radio can't fix so what's the problem? (Not to mention the newest update coming at E3. V2.40 will give us those things) I've found that both systems offer the same reliability. There's no difference in connectivity. They both work fine for me so I don't understand why Microsoft is charging.
Plus the amazing things that you can do if you have a PSP on hand...playing PS1 games and streaming all music pictures and video from your PS3 to your pocket. That also is pretty convenient.

@valekeyes46:
both systems also, but with the ps3, dont forget the built in wireless (another $100 for ms adapter), and swappable hard drive of the ps3 vs proprietary, overpriced hard drives on the xbox360.
to be fair, the HD-DVD drive for xbox360 is only $50 max now. then again, that's a ripoff, as pc hd-dvd drives are available for half that.
but xbox live is much better, but i do like the organization of the new PSN store.

So I can keep my ugly white case, or get a tower that doesn't fit in my entertainment center? Pure lose...
I'm lucky in that cost isn't really an issue for me and I've got a Lain-Li PC-75b case that I absolutely love, but I'm seriously doubting this thing can mitigate the noise of that stupid DVD drive.
